    I've been wanting to get one, but couldn't find any videos. Glad you grabbed one. I'm anxious to see what it can do with simple mods

    I definitely was thinking about the 170 because rather than comparing displacement, price is the key especially with these homeowner type saws. Great video!

    It cuts better than I expected it will! When idling, it sounds like a 4stroke motor.
    My Zenoah clone (Alpina C41) is 10 years old and still going. Light use, I'm cutting around 10m3 of firewood with it every year. I changed oil and fuel lines, the original lines got crude quickly, and I changed one carb kit.
    That bog when accelerating is also present and I could not adjust the carb to completely eliminate it. The carb is Walbro. I even replaced that carb with the noname one from 52cc clone saw (much bigger venturi). The layout is the same, except there is no return fuel line (to the pump) and you need to replace the cover plate that has impulse nipple with the original cover plate and drill the impulse hole. The hole was on the 52cc carb, but plugged, I drilled the plug out. The saw is more responsive when limbing.
    Ordered a .325 clutch drum, I'm curious how will it run with a bigger chain.

    I needed to buy a small saw really quickly for a job and my others were being used....so far, I'm impressed at the 1600. Fingers crossed for longevity.

    Must also have a different carb than the older s145, s160 and s180 as mine either has the splined or pac man jet screw heads, can't remember which, would have to go look.
    After a muffler mod, base gasket delete and re tune, mine has snappy throttle response!

    I was wondering if the newer MTD saws had an adjustable oiler.

  • @brandonblankenship5293

    The chainsaw cuts fine for someone who wants to cut some firewood or just do some work around the house. The chainsaw seems to run better off of premix fuel as well. It’s got it’s quirks but it does start an cut every time. 😊

    Not a bad saw Boedy. It cuts great. Try a longer bar and see what happens then.

    After port work you should bring that to Hopper stock. I have a poulan pro 220 that might make a decent comparison. Not certain it will hang with the craftsman after you port it but fun either way.

    Used echo cs 400's for $150 or less,would slap that thing silly, and outlast a half dozen of those cheap things. Torque-laden 42 cc's of homeowner goodness.
    I gifted two of them used cs 400's to family. They both had aluminum handles, and press-fit metal oiler gears. Wonderful little homeowner saws!
    They're always for sale used. Still very cheaply priced new as well.

    Had one of these given to me as a gift. Definitely needs a full chisel chain. The stock chain is absolutely trash. I would definitely buy one of these over a Poulan.

    I bought a ryobi weed eater a long time ago with all the attachments. It was great. Lasted 6 or 7 years of weekly service. California was about to ban them and mine had about had it so I bought 4 more before they were discontinued. None of the four lasted more than two months. That’s Chinese tools in a nutshell for me. I’d pay extra for an echo just on principle. Anyone else find it strange that China can sell a non EPA clone saw in California but the Germans or Swedes can’t sell the original? Only one way that makes any sense 🤷🏽‍♂️

    Wondering what kind of magic you was thinking about doing to the saw ? About the name i worked for Sears twice was over small engine shop 30 years ago . In the hayday Ted Williams the spendid splinter had his name on boat moters chainsaws shotguns fishing rods . The first Ted Williams chansaw i saw whent from floor to your knee had a huge bow bar on it back when men were men. The splendid splinter might be a cool name

    Seems a good saw for the $ Looks ok too 170 is only 30cc so that’s not really a fair fight Got to say 170 is a tough little bugger. Can’t seem to kill mine in full bar of ash and oak so…. Run it up against some other 40’s eh? MS 250? That’s 45 I think. So when you going to hot rod the 170? Should get lota views on that !!

    • @bryantitus6634
      @bryantitus6634 Před rokem

      I get what you are saying, but this saw cost basically exactly the same as a ms170. That's where the direct comparison comes in. I'm also not a ms170 fan and I grew up on Stihl chainsaws. My brother has a ms170 and id personally never buy one new or pay more than about $50 for a used one.
      The echo cs3510 is waaaaay better in about every way over the ms170, 171, 180, 181, and 211. And being within 1cc of the 211 but being lighter than the 170 means a good bit.

    My Craftsman S160 would never cut through that. May go in as wide as the blade and that would be it. For 3 years all I ever used it for was pruning small trees, worked fine for that. But lately had to cut down 8 of those small trees and it got through 3 of the smaller ones with some struggle but just rotated on the 4th. It did require a lot of effort just to cut through the first 3. Talk about trash. Anyways, I just bought the Stihl MS162 but reading your review of it now I'm nervous to even start it, as I could return it if I don't. Question is why are you trashing them, you never really gave a reason for why they are "turds" and I am trying to find a video that you may (or may not) having posted demonstrating such as this one you are demonstrating with the Craftsman. I just want to hear a valid reason, not an opinion, about the problem with the Sthil.

    • @novicelumberjack
      @novicelumberjack  Před měsícem

      The reason I am so hard on the Stihl is because... for the same amount of money, you can purchase a much better saw. Granted, you might need to use your brain to figure out small issues, but in the end you will be a better human being carrying around a better saw. Buy the JonCutter 5800.

    • @Barrie562
      @Barrie562 Před měsícem

      @@novicelumberjack I did get a good deal on the MS 162 at $219 cad. I paid more than that for the Craftsman which is giving me a lot of grief right now - even with brand new chains installed. No dealer in our area carries the JohnCutter 5800, so Amazon would be the only choice. Still haven't tried using the Stihl yet so it probably can be returned, but if it will do the simple jobs the Craftsman won't it may be a good enough gamble to keep.
