Facts
So I was actually in the movie. Nick did learn somethings and got to the point of carrying his sticks around like a actual percussionist lol The harder elements were done by a stunt double. Specifically on the zoomed shots. Anyway this was shot in the winter/spring ish of 2001,2002. The Atl A&T band is actually Southwest Dekalb HS in Decatur, GA. There were a handful, literally of CAU students in the band as well. The stadoums used were MBC and CAU stadiums.
I am NOT a percussionist so I don't know all of that technical stuff outside of the fact that I don't believe any sheet music was used. Also they distorted the sound of the band from the first scene at the graduation till the end as they wanted the sound of the band to get progressively better throughout the movie. Trust SWD was solid back then.

I believe the movie is based on the music producer Dallas Austin’s life in college. Maybe that’s why no sheet music was used because he wrote all the sections. 🤷🏽♀️

I am actually impressed, the main thing about doing this drum rhythm on a practice pad, is it doesn’t have the snap of the lagotto. Which is the snare he is playing. The piece he is playing is called wake up jubilee. It’s the cadence the lead snare plays as you take your morning March. Most marching bands practice before the rest of the school gets there. This cadence plays all of the basic changes found in marching music. The reason there is no music, is because it changes slightly per band and drum lead. The fast single roll, looks odd, because again, a practice pad doesn’t have the snap of a lagotto snare. That’s a snare with 22 milled aluminum rim keys, a machined aluminum head ring, and a Kevlar woven drum head. A rim shot on that snare is as loud as a gunshot.

Not that surprising a lot of that happens in band rooms across the country. Definitely did in mine. That's how I learned every single cadence when I was on drumline. Couldn't and still can't read sheet music.

In cadets we memorized every drum beats. There was no sheets of our beats. It was just passed from senior to junior by hear.
I met John S. Pratt about 20 years ago at a drum clinic. Such a great drummer and even nicer person. Drum Corps on Parade is so iconic. One of my favorite solos growing up. RIP

Memorization is key in a lot of HBCU drum lines. I marched all 4 years including middle school and couldn’t read music when I started, but knew how to play just like this. I could play this drum solo after watching Drumline twice as a kid
I was in the drum line, and pit in high school when this came out. There was not one of us who didn't try to replicate it.
As a person who was actually in this movie, I am laughing because a lot of the things you pointed out are the same thing we caught after watching this movie a few times. I can tell you that you are correct that no metronome was used for this piece. As far as the shots go, what you see in the background when the directors and section leader are talking, that is Nick's double, as well as the shots of his hands is Nick's double. Now don't kill me, but I always thought that this piece was a sketchy...but thats just my opinion. Lastly, there is no sheet music that I know of for this piece, but I could be wrong.

I loved the hell out of this movie. One of the best marching band movies I've ever seen.
A lot of these “solos” aren’t written in HBCU culture. They are only taught. They grow change through the years. You should visit a HBCU drum line.
That's actually really cool. Letting it develop organically, and letting people rub off on it gives it character.

Devin's ability to memorize drum pieces on the first take at normal speed is a gift. He should've been praised for that, but instead, he gets shit on the whole movie for not being able to read music. When you have the ability to memorize complex pieces on the first take, the need to read music is damn-near not even needed.
Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. But when talent works hard, the rest get left behind. Lazy people don't perfect their craft.

@@bigghoww It has nothing to do with being lazy at all. It's about utilizing a gift to it's fullest extent. Learning to read sheet music is good in this case so you don't have to rely on someone else already knowing the piece in order too copy said piece.

This made me realize something that I’ve never noticed before. Drumline is a live action anime.
One of my favorite guilty pleasure movies. This and my dad drumming inspired me to pursue percussion. Drumline will always hold a special place in my heart.

@Christian Miller The dialogue made it seem like it was supposed to be sight reading but the script had or actor said the wrong word.
@@LawrenceStroman I think it was sight reading. The movie shows that there were other percussionist auditioning before Devon and it also shows the way he memorizes music by watching and listening to whoever is playing. My theory is Devon watched the other people audition then memorized the piece before he went up to play.
Right. Most people memorize it on accident anyway.....you play it enough lol

@@austinhenkel3569 it's not that hard.... I caught on like that and after playing a couple of other instruments. I started my softmore year in highschool. By my senior year I was playing tenor and Base at a DCI level. I tried out for base for a DCI band and almost made it.

I’ve learned one thing in life...nothing is impossible, if a person sets there mind to it anything can’t be done. With that said. This man has a gift. Bottom line. Absolutely amazing and I’m glad I watched it. 👊🏼
That was some impressive work. If for nothing else, just the sheer avalanche of notes and phrases to memorize. Learning some complicated solos now (as an older guitarist) and trying to remember and play some of this stuff by muscle memory is far and away harder than learning it or being able to physically play it.

That’s called a practice pad. It’s so you don’t have to practice and cause loud noise. Percussion instruments are the loudest.

I have the studio recordings of the things played in the movie and I believe there is a track on my cd that has the piece. I know it has all of the cadences and the battle between Devin and Sean in the band room
I remember rewatching this movie after quite a few years on the snare. And the first thing I noticed was that back stick on that e. And the fact that the audio played it as an accent. That's when I realized that no, nick cannon did not learn how to play the snare for this movie

Yeah great job. Shit, I can't do it. I tell ya though, I've met one of the cast from the movie and I sure did talk to him about their drumline practices. He told me like, it was like a drum boot camp they had to go to practicing every day cuz none of them had that kind of knowledge in terms of achieving the impossible drum notes and triplets. They didn't know how to read drum notes he said. So that was interesting for me when he shared that with me. The cast I met was the drumline lead. I was working for Big 5 Sporting Goods when this dude came in and was shopping for a tennis racket. I was a sales person that got to help this dude, and I recognized right of way from the movie Drum line. He's name is Mr. Leonard Roberts
When i watched this movie i was under the impression he wasnt really playing the audition piece. He was just free ballin it and the people never caught on to it. Seeing how he couldn't read the music but finally after so many years i stand corrected.
