Spraying Corn/Raking Hay/Round Baling Hay with International 1066 and New Holland 853 Round Baler

  • It's hot and so so dry on the farm. The lawn is brown and so are the pastures. The corn is doing surprisingly well considering, but so are the weeds. Alan sprays them with Halex GT, a herbicide. The John Deere 820 and Clark sprayer are just what we need to get the job done. While Alan was spraying corn, a friend of ours was cutting some more hay on land that we work with him on. Alan then headed over to rake it up using the V Rake and 830 Case tractor. The hay dried fast so Alan got the 1066 International and New Holland 853 Round Baler. This is our main baler and it does an excellent job. After we finished that piece, it was time to move on to the next piece. Alan shows off the land owners Case International 385 tractor that is now being used on the V Rake. Alan and Paul get that piece baled and get some of the bales hauled home. The Weatherman was calling for much needed rain on Sunday with a 90% chance, so Alan spread some fertilizer on a few hay fields. On Sunday, we were blessed with over an inch of rain!

      If one has to sit in a cab for 10-12 hours a day while farming hundreds and hundreds of acres of land, large, comfortable equipment is called for, or one won't be doing it for very long. On the backside, on needs to farm that many acres to pay for that equipment.

    I hate those so-called environmentalists who proclaim with certainty that this or that chemical or technique should either always or never be used. Usually, these people do not have the foggiest idea about farm economies and what it takes to keep a farm running, produce quality food, and provide for a family. In fact, they usually have never farmed so much as a tomato plant. Having said all of that, I sure do dislike the whole idea of RoundUp ready corn.

    Those chain balers will roll up just about anything. People down here didn’t like them much because they claimed they had soft cores and the bales would squat over time. It looked like your bales had pretty good cores. What size are the bales you rolled up? What would you say were the biggest problems you have experienced with that chain baler?

    • @trinitydairy
      @trinitydairy  Před 3 lety +2

      No there not a soft core, but If you drive to fast when baling, or don't fill the edges good, they will be a soft bale, it doesn't like to bale straw, or really fine, short hay, other than that, it it will eat a windrow! The one thing that I don't like is the overfill protection, it's made to shear the shear bolt for the pickup, if you're in heavy windrows, you can go through a lot of bolts, I wish they would have had a slip clutch instead.other than that, I can't think of anything major, just basic wear and tare.

    • @trinitydairy
      @trinitydairy  Před 3 lety +3

      I really like it, it makes good bales but they are soft core bales, so they don't stack very well, I mainly use it for making baleage, this year is the most dry hay I have made with it, but the guy I bought it from told me, that the trick to making good bales with it, is to bale until you can hear the tractor start to labor, if you stop when the buzzer goes off, they will be puff balls, so that's what I have always done.
