    If there is one thing I truely miss from the Farm is, Babies and Black and White Holsteins, That is all we had, Nope I lied we 3 Jerseys for the butter fat. Out of our 300 Cows we milked #5 and # 13 were my favorite. Sweetest Cows you could ever have. Enjoyed your video, Thanks for sharing.

    Our pasture was mostly low ground, so you could usually see the cows from the house. A few "Come Boss Come" yelled at the cows was usually enough to get them to come home. On occasion we would have to get one of the tractors and drive to the edge of the pasture and rev the engine a few times - they associated the tractor with getting fed so that usually got them running home. Foggy mornings were about the only time we had to actually go out and get them.

    I always enjoyed getting cows in for milking especially during the autumn. That always felt meditative to me. Still does. Seemed like the Holsteins always pushed the Guernseys around a little but Guernseys always are the first in line and it was Bonnie first then Sarah next. We name our cows too. BTW, what's your Nellie's genetic make up?? Appears to have some Jersey or Swiss?

  • @Stephenklausmeyer-hr9rb

    Jennifer, when you said help push them along reminds of every morning on our farm when our herd would knock down the make shift gate that my dad had set up (3 six inch pipes and 12 foot long that were tied up with sisel twine) because the bulls wanted to get to the cattle the next farm over or possibly the corn they were growing. Anyway, the entire herd would follow and so my dad would go bring them back. So every morning I would wake up to a herd of Angus and Hereford coming down a little dirt road turning into our driveway and following was my dad in a Volkswagen beetle. That was always fun to watch. We had a stanchion barn very similar to yours however since we had beef cattle my parents used the entire barn for a big bedding pack. I'm glad I was young because if I knew better , I wouldn't have liked cleaning it out. The pack would get several feet thick before we cleaned it out and we didn't have a skid steer. Oh and no barn cleaner either.

    It might be wise to address the spotted knapweed (purple flowers) in your pasture. This plant will change the soil chemistry in a way that will make it unsuitable for the growth of other plants and you could lose that pasture for grazing. As you can see the cows don't utilize it for forage.

    • @trinitydairy

      That's how dairy cows are built.

    • @jeremysimon4439
      @jeremysimon4439 Před 26 dny

      They’re not skinny, they’re healthy. They’re putting their energy into producing milk.

    • @MorganOtt-ne1qj
      @MorganOtt-ne1qj Před 26 dny +1

      The ladies put most of their energy intake into milk production, and not meat. It's another reason for the "dry" period 45-60 days before calving, to allow them to build up reserves in their body. None of their cows would be considered "skinny" on a Dairy Body Condition Score. Great observation! 👍
