  • This is part two of a multi-part series looking into whether Todd truly understands what he is saying or is this all just a “Push and Reward System” as some say.
This week we will look into Todd using words in ways I have not taught him how to do. I only teach Todd single words/concepts, and he puts them together. I believe that he is showing a true understanding of the words and concepts behind them and the ability to combine them to accurately express ideas, thoughts, and feelings he did not have words for at the time.
Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 51 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. If you would like to see more of Todd and his day-to-day life please visit his Facebook page.

Sounds like Todd needed new words. He couldn't say what he wanted to say.

You say Todd has over 50 buttons, but I only see 23 buttons. Are you censoring Todd? LOL Just kidding. Where are the other words?

No and know sound alike. Maybe he wants Dad to know something.

It’s amazing how well Todd is able to express his emotions. And it’s so sweet that he obviously misses you when you go out of town.

At the end, it could be that he was remembering how it hurt when the ball broke. He didn't run downstairs to see you because the ball breaking still hurt too much.

As a speech pathologist who works with nonspeaking people, I can conjecture that Todd, having learned that communication is possible, wants a more robust vocabulary. I work with my clients to teach them how to spell using the 26 letters of our alphabet. I’m not saying that this is possible with a cat, but it’s just a thought.

When Todd kept saying Want What and Want Hmm, then for a moment I thought that maybe he was wondering what Dad wants (never seen a cat ask their human what they want but I wouldn't think of it as something impossible because cats are smarter than they look and are given credit for). And I've never seen a cat look so sad and heartbroken like Todd was after the jingle ball incident, it just made me want to reach out through the screen and comfort him. My mini panther (a beginner button user) has a similar ball but for him it has to be pink or he won't play with it, so that kind of got me thinking that maybe cats have favorite colors. I know that they don't see colors like we do but seeing Todd only liking a certain colored ball and my mini panther only playing with pink toys, then it could be a possibility. Just as I am writing this comment, he said "Play Ball" and brought me his pink ball (he plays fetch).

Sweet, sweet Todd. I absolutely feel he is communicating via the board. I absolutely adore this channel and i miss my cat Dexter so much, but Todd, Glamour and Paulie help with my grief. -Pam xxx

Todd constantly shows that he is purposeful in his button pressing. He checks to make sure you have heard him. He doesn't only ask for things for himself; he asks for things for Paulie and Glamour, too.

I can not fathom how someone can think there is no thought going on inTodds mind that he needs to express.

A short story. - The first cat we had when I was a child was called Mille. At the time, we were living on an island, and made weekly boat trips to town- being absent from morning to late afternoon. Mille was still young, should I say still a kitten, not grown up size, spending time both inside and outside (no cars on the island.) Once we could not find him anywhere when we were leaving for the town trip. - So we had to leave anyway. Normally we would had put him inside for those days. - So, off we went. We entered the boat, and the 1 hr journey to the town started.

Cats do think about things much more than people usually give them credit for. - Nothing random in the way Todd uses his buttons. ❤

Poor little guy. It has to be frustrating for you both that he doesn’t have the word and you don’t know the word to give him. I do think it is true communication. For me as soon as they combine their words to communicate a new concept, it shows they are not just pressing buttons for a reward. He is a clever boy. Edit Also that he talks about head happy to talk about he feels better is something no in the moment and he wants to communicate with you.

Maybe Todd was telling us, his adoring fans on the other side of the nest camera, that ouching the jingle ball ouched him.

Todd is so intelligent, I am not surprised that he needs new toys to stimulate his mind.
