- Jobava is well known for taking 1.b3 opening to an entirely new level. The Georgian genius faced Magnus Carlsen at the World Blitz 2019. He opened the game with 1.b3 and the onus was on Carlsen to find a good antidote against it. Check out whether Magnus managed to outplay Baadur or Jobava managed to come out on top.
Update: This video was named "How did Magnus Carlsen react to Baadur Jobava's 1

For those that missed it the killa move was when Magnus turned up, took his jacket off and sat down.
No, it was Bb4.
Best to resign after that move.

Close...Magnus always sits first before taking off his jacket, that's the Killa move!
One of the cringiest comment I've ever seen.
The most amazing thing about this video is how Magnus is able to play at two different tables simultaneously.
Most people don't know what that means, but we know he is able to sit in both seats at the same time!
@@jryer1 I think he was referring to the other player in the background that looked like him. Two different tables is completely different than playing both seats and any chess player worth their weight would know to play and predict their opponents move. (How else would you set traps or avoid them?)
@@trevorclapham5571 Yes most likely, but I was attempting to make a more important point, that Magnus doesn't just avoid traps, but literally plays the table from the other side. Most people, even many GMs don't or can't do this. Set the board with just a few pieces, and try to play the table in your mind from the other side. Most can't do it, those that can have a distinct advantage!
@@jryer1 interesting. I thought that would be a no brainer. What is most impressive to me is the speed they can process and retain so many moves and combinations a head of the current state of the board.

8:06 was the killer move. He through his bishop in the line of fire to die, with no protection but if Joval took his bishop it would garantee that Magnus would get his queen back. It was a brilliant play.

Even so: His frustration was very clear at the end of the game, even despite being an obvious underdog and having played a great game. You're here! That is what's important ☺️ get a chess set yet?!
8:01 was where the magic happened. It looks like he's sacrificing the bishop for no real gain but it's forcing white to either take the bishop or take the pawn now. If the king takes the bishop then the pawn moves forward and neither the king nor knight can reposition in time to take the queen that'll pop up next move. If he ignores the bishop then the bishop can get into the back of the pawns and completely open up at least two pawns to make their way to the back of the board. Brilliant.

It's crazy how fluid they play. In games I play I usually focus on making small gains but here they play far more with dimensions and turn order. It really redefines thinking ahead.
Yeh on a grandmaster scale you have to think so many possible moves ahead for each piece and how your opponent might move before you actually do anything and they do it in mere seconds, to put in perspective I had a chess board from Excalibur that had 72 difficulty lvls and at the highest lvl after 3 days it still had not made it's first move because it was basically calculating every possible playout that could happen based of my first move

@Samuel Díez If white captures the black pawn with the knight, then Be1 and black gobbles up whites pawns, which is essentially what happened in the game. If white's king captures the B (which is unprotected) then simply a2 and the pawn can't be stopped, promotes to a Q, and game over. Finding this move in a game with classical time controls wouldn't be easy for most players, but to find it in a blitz game is pretty damn great. My question is, how far ahead did he see that he had this move?
@@whateveri8652 Ok, so maybe they'll take it on board for next time. Why so triggered over a simple suggestion?
@Samuel Díez White king takes the bishop, yes the pawn is unstoppable. But if knight takes pawn, I'm guessing Be1, then the bishop gobbles up all the kingside pawns. The g-pawn is immobile and unprotectable.
@@00bikeboy I think he spotted it on the board, in fact his hand was on the king, and then suddenly switches to his bishop. Anyway, a stunnig move. Just look how the postures and the body language of both Jobava and Carlsen changed right after it.

It was actually perfect bait. Magnus wanted Jobava to take his bishop, but it didn't matter if he did or not. If Jobava moved his king forward, nothing can stop Magnus' pawn from promoting to a queen the second it reaches the end of the board. This is beautiful theatre. You don’t have to understand chess to realise these guys are using more brain in one game than the rest of us use in a week.
@Zangief ☭ why are you so offended how much of your brain you use in a week time. Surely you use more in a week than magnus will use in his entire life.
for those who don't know how to read chess movements with letters and numbers, the time of the killer move is 8:04 if you're wondering why, it's because he needed to enter jobava's side to get rid of the pawns at the right side. However, he cannot enter without leaving his one pawn at the left unguarded. If you're thinking, but that pawn was killed, it was killed, but it allowed his bishop to enter no man's land and magnus gained open access to all of jobava's pawns at the right side.
That was so slick and he hid it so well with everything going on on the left side of the board. That bishop seemed like it was in the mix on the left side, then all of a sudden it’s ok jobavas side, and you realize he can take out most of jobavas pawns on the right side
8:04 WONDERFUL ... this whole process behind somebody's thinking ... Magnus wanted to play something else and then suddenly find the winning move with bishop !!! here he knew he will win the game .. and all this preparation in advance to stop the opponents pawns because he knew he's left with a dark square bishop .. this man is such a damn genius !!!
n00b here... it sounds like you saw what was happening, can you break it down a little bit so I can understand?
well, depending on which chess pieces you're left with, this will decide the type of endgame ... magnus knows he's left with a dark square bishop ...
so he needs to stop the pawns of his opponent on dark squares , because he has a dark square bishop , once he can reach the 1 line , he can organize an attack from there and eat them up one by one (like he did) and the whole thing is collapsing ... there is no doubt in my mind his genius saw this solution
started with 7:21 F7-F6 , and G5-G4, like this all the opponents pawns stand still at dark squares , for his dark square bishop
neil macmillan yup doing that move risk a intruder in white pawn line or risk a queen
Hey, can you explain what stopped him from taking the bishop with the king at this time? I am missing something and I can not figure out what.
he could not take ... (8:29) he drift away the opponents' king from his promoting pawn
Magnus Carleson’s stunt double in the background.
Was thinking the same thing! 🤣
There is not any player with name “carleson
Jabava is an amazing blitz player, in his own right but this was just Carlsen in poetic motion! Jabava opened in the Larsen-Nimso and morphed into an English but he let Carlsen control the A file with a passed pawn and that was all Carlsen needed; brilliant. Carlsen is in a class unto his own; I think the World's best GM's understand that too and expect these "surprises" in the end.
i don't understand any of these terms but hats off to magnus ig 🤷🏾♂️
People often underestimate how good Magnus is because like all grandmasters he draws a lot and loses the odd game and occasionally comes in the top 3 rather than winning the tournament he's in. He's consistently at the top and has the highest rating for a reason. The pressure to perform at the top is also huge. Once you're at the top and have achieved everything it's harder to keep motivated for merely maintaining the top spot, there's little to reach for, unlike those beneath him clawing their way up.
I just feel lucky to have been alive during Magnus's reign as well as having witnessed Kasparov at his peak.
So jobava comes out attacking. Carlsen decides to reposition to his left flank and deploys queen to hold right side. Jobava extends his pawns and build in the center, forcing carlsens queen back. After castle jobava attacks left while holding center, calrsen counters into power, reestablishing a right side. Jobava attacks center and carlsen repositions his queen. Jobava joins his rooks on top and carlsen pushes them, Jobava pulls back cover. Carlsen moves his some power pieces back. Jobava takes the positioning and then he moves his pawn which allows carlsen to maneuver his pawns into a stalemate near side of the board. Then the attacks commence with only half the board really in play. Just a tactical view I don’t play chess since a younger man but it was fascinating.

@@mariocezar4274 Ke3, g2 and promoting.
@@krizantomic2686 Right, after e4 g3 Ke3 (or Ke2) g2 the white King can not protect with Kf2, because of the black bishop.
@@hw8556 correct.
8:05 - Killer Move
Can someone explain why please haha
@@vToneehh Queen takes pawn promotion if horse manuever obliteration of white pawn
@@vToneehh Magnus ran his bishop up the board next to Jabova's king. If Jabova takes it, Magnus's pawn is free to move towards the queening square, threatening the knight at the same time. If Jabova doesn't take Magnus's bishop, the bishop sneaks behind the unbreakable line of white pawns and eats them for breakfast. Either way, Jabova is toast.
@@shez3532 well elucidated
I love how baadur jobava immediately shakes his hand after loosing such great humble man
8:03 is the killer move. King can't take because the a-pawn will queen, and if knight takes a3, bishop will go to e1 and vacuum up white's g- and h-pawns for the win.
I'm not a chess expert, but Jobava seems like a good & confident player.
His Elo ranking is more than 2700, that’s absolute world class level. But Magnus is pretty much the best chess player ever
Analyze with a program each movement of the game
After each Jobava movement, more than 50% of Magnus' movements were the same program responses.
There were even Carlsen movements that first of all the program had them as the first option ...
Magnus Carlsen is a genius hehehehehhe a very powerful player.
sorry for my English...
8:03 this is the killer move for you non chess players wondering. Magnus sacrificed the bishop so Jobava only could take the bishop but have no way of stopping the pawn to reach the other side.
No, he sacrificed the pawn to get the bishop through the line.

I may not be a chess head master, but the moment Magnus moves his bishop there, I knew it was over.
I have not heard of Jobava before, but I love him now that he plays Larsen's Opening at top level. One of my dreams if for 1.b3 to be viable at at grandmaster level because I think it's probably the most fun opening I've played.
