Am I correct in assuming that the black hat that Galinda gives Elphaba was meant as a vile insult, but when Elphaba puts it on her head, rather than being humiliated by it, she embraces her true identity? Her expression doesn't LOOK humiliated or angry or hurt. She looks....almost defiant? Like the hat is empowering her? Am I right in interpreting this?
Also, I know there are A LOT of movies that are auto-tuned when the actors have to sing and its all gross. This sounds REALLY GOOD to me, as far as the singing goes...especially from Elphaba. Am I to assume they are going to let the voices really shine because we are getting a GOOD MUSICAL? Not like Cats 2019 or Phantom of the Opera, but a GOOD musical with people who can actually sing well?

Yes and YES! You are 100% correct about the hat. Excellent observation! Wait until you see what Elphaba's full story is and ALL the complex factors of her life from birth until Defying Gravity! The singing sounds excellent! This is going to be THE movie of the year if not decade. 💚
EDIT: Just wanted to include that I have seen the live musical 5 times in 4 different cities and read the book.... its amazing.

@@choptankmonster So I have a question...how closely does the book Wicked by Gregory McGuire follow the story? Is it the same story as the Broadway play? If so, I'd love to at least read the book to prepare myself for seeing the movie.

@@CeltycSparrowgood question. The musical has the bare bones of the plot, but the book and the musical are completely different things. The book is dark, more mature, and dives more into political corruption. Wicked the musical is family friendly and focuses more on the friendship of Elphaba and Glinda.

@@CeltycSparrow sure sure I've got you!
To answer your question directly: Yes. It is the same story....but not the whole story.... because the book has so many stories and layers to it.
In my OPINION: I would see the Musical first if you can, then read the books, then see the movie.
The major differences are that the tones of the book vs. musical are quite different.
The book by Gregory McGuire is one of the best books I've ever read... I read a small part before I saw the musical and I'm glad I waited to read the rest of the book until AFTER I saw the live Musical. Reading first would have spoiled the magic of the musical for what IT IS if I had read the book first... it would have been too distracting to be picking apart what the musical couldn't include...just not enough time for it all.
The book begins with violence, betrayal and trauma and those themes carry throughout Elphaba's entire life as well as the society around her. If you are into deep, dark, incredibly fleshed-out characters you will love the book. I love dark, intimate topics, so I liked it a lot. The sequel book, Son of a Witch, is my FAVORITE book by Gregory McGuire... it is a much easier read than Wicked. Son Of A Witch is about the upbringing and life of a green boy who is presumed to be the son of..... It is an excellent continuation of the WICKED story.
The Broadway Musical that is based on the book WICKED is more of a comedy with many of the book's traumatic themes woven in and they DO remain tied to the plot.... so, I'd say the Musical is rather loosely based on the book in terms of the major storylines/plots. ..DO SEE IT because it IS spectacular.
Based on the trailers for the movie I can already tell you that the movies are going to have a lot more of the book in them. It looks like the movies will be divided into two parts to match the musical's two acts (Act 1 and Act 2). THIS IS A GOOD THING! We really do want that much time so we can see more of the book's story lines and plots of all the characters ..they are seriously incredible and deeply interconnected.
I could go on for hours going in circles about anything WICKED.
I hope this rambling helps with whatever order you choose! I'm here if you have more questions or if I need to clarify my ramblings.
      💚

@@choptankmonster Do we know if the Broadway version of the musical (hopefully the one with Idina Menzel) is available to watch online anywhere? I don't live in New York, so I can't just go to Broadway and see it. But I DO want to see the play. IS Elphaba's motive (if I am understanding) that Oz wants to banish all the Animals that talk, (like the Cowardly Lion) and she wants to protect them from being banished from Oz and she has to choose whether to do this, or accept the Wizard's love? If so, I am surprisingly totally on her side, and I hope she chose the animals and left the Wizard in the dust. I'm sure there's got to be SOMEONE circulating this play, to hype it up before the movie, for people like me, who aren't as familiar with the story, right?

"considering the story is 20 years old" it's actually older than that! The stage show was based on the book Wicked by Gregory Maguire which was published in 1995. I've never seen the play but have read the book (which I loved and am currently re-reading)
