    The medical requirements for entry into flying positions in the UK Armed Forces are somewhat more strict and screening more extensive than for a CAA ATPL/CPL Class 1 because the Services are looking at long term employability as well as service as a pilot. For example:
    Eye muscle balance tests using a Maddox Rod are used on first entry to detect what are effectively small amounts of squint - both vertical and horizontal plane. Hypermetropia beyond stated limits is a no no owing to the likelihood in later life of lens dislocation.
    EEG is performed routinely at initial entry to detect spikes that may lead to epileptiform attacks in the future.
    EKG/ECG frequencies will vary depending on age.
    Routine periodic and random urine testing for drugs will occur.
    Because military pilots have to fit inside a limited range of aircraft using e.g., HOTAS controls, their body envelope is critical for specific aircraft. Measurements such as Buttock-Knee, Sitting Height, shoulder-finger tip all have both minima and maxima as well as variations that may exclude certain types of aircraft cockpits.
    Specific medical training and testing in environments such as the "Dunker" and decompression chamber will be required for certain aircraft thus examination of lung and eustachian tube function is rather more critical than for the civilian class 1.
    There are plenty of other differences should someone be thinking of getting their flight training in the armed forces and then moving to the civilian sector.
    Ex-military AME

    The medical classes in the USA are only slightly different.
    FAA Basic med is the most limited and used for very casual recreational pilots, gliders and balloons, mostly in the light sport category, if you qualify for a drivers license you probably qualify for "basic med" unless you have already held an FAA medical certificate and it was suspended or revoked.
    FAA 3rd class med is good for all private pilots, student pilots(even ATP students) and some flight instructing; good for 60 months if issued under age 40 and 24 months over age 40.
    FAA 2nd class is needed for ATC and all operations requiring a commercial pilot certificate, it is also suitable for ATP second or third in command with a couple exceptions; good for 12 months for all ages then it reverts to third class privilege for remaining 12 or 48months(depending on age).
    First class is similar to EASA class one, however it is only legally required for an ATP pilot in command, second in command of international flights with three or more pilots, and any ATP(...second, third, or fourth in command) between age 60 and 65; first class is good for 12 months under age 40 and 6 months over age 40, then it reverts to second class and finally 3rd class privileges. Most airlines require first class medical for all new pilots even for co-pilots, though they may allow existing employees that cannot renew a first class medical to continue as a co-pilot with a 2nd class medical.

I have 20/20 vision and I am fit but the only problem is my colour deficiency. I’m pretty sure here in Canada they do the same thing with the light thing you were talking about and I can do that test. I'm told that while a BMI of 35 is the limit, if you can't egress the cabin of an airliner through a window, you can still fail even if you're below it. So it really depends what planes your prospective employer flies. Someone that is on the tall side, like 1.86m, will be over 120 kilos if their BMI is 35..! Not sure if they'd be able to squeeze through a 737 window in that case.

    A guy I know didn't pass his medical AFTER completing the flight school so he lost his license due to not seeing the difference between two green colours. The reason was so you can see the difference between short and long grass (?).

    I can't pass the Ishihara test, but I can easily identify individual colors. It's when certain colors are meshed together--like in the Ishihara Test, that I cannot differentiate the colors. Oh well, I guess nobody will be flying my friendly skies.

    Hello, I have a question. Recently I have been very worried for my Medical Class I Medical, I have a condition called Pectus Excavatum, it is only aesthetic, but I really need to know if it is automatically disqualifying. Or if I am only going to get a tougher exam. Thank you!

    Nice video summing up all medical requirements! I was quite aware of my color-blindness before taking my medical examination for class 1. I contacted several medical centers and they instructed me to take several color tests independently. The result was a slight form of protanopia that fit into limitations. But guess what happened when I took the class 1 examination? I was refused because of my color vision. It has been almost a year since that and I have been struggling with authorities to re-take the tests. I got the approval of my color vision eventually and now I'm waiting to repeat the medical examination, hopefully when the situation allows it again.
    It is wise to ask for information in case of doubts, I'm not saying the opposite. But my experience has shown that most of the medical centers and examiners are not 100% transparent. So I strongly advise all applicants to review by yourselves the actual regulations. Look for thresholds and specific medical parameters and make sure you are compliant with them. It would have saved a lot of time, money and frustration if I had been aware of this in the first place.
    Do not hesitate to contact me if you're in a similar situation. Color vision deficiency is a difficult matter but in most cases, you can still become a pilot.

    • @PPinto-fd9qg
      @PPinto-fd9qg Před 2 lety

      @@evanpender8924 Depends on where you take the examination, basically EASA or FAA. In both cases, the initial test is the Isihara plates. If you have no issues with this one you will pass. Otherwise, you will have to conduct more tests. In EASA regulation these can be the anomaloscope, CAD or the latern. My advice if you cannot pass isihara is that you go to a medical center where they offer these tests and check your results against the thresholds in the regulation.

      @@PPinto-fd9qgI'm in Ireland, I think it's the EASA medical I'll have to do. I wonder would they allow using the enchroma glasses during the isihara test?

    • @PPinto-fd9qg
      @PPinto-fd9qg Před 2 lety

      @@evanpender8924 Indeed, Ireland falls under EASA regulations. Unfortunately, the will not accept color correction lenses for the tests. You can search for 'EASA Part MED AMC', you will find a pdf where they specify the pass/fail criteria for all medical conditions included color vision. If you cannot pass Isihara, you can try to undertake the other tests in a specialized center and see if you color visions fits.

    I just remembered about the pilot of "German Wings" who crashed intentionally into the mountain killing all on board.
    What was wrong with him medically and how come he was allowed to fly?.....
    I am worried as passenger if the pilot is not sound minded or mentally unfit to fly.
    What is your response to this.
    Thank you.
    Best wishes from Leicester, ENGLAND.

    Momenteel zit ik in 4Havo en het is altijd al mijn droom geweest om piloot te worden alleen vraag ik mij nu af of het nog wel slim is om proberen geselecteerd te worden om een piloten opleiding te doen door de corona crisis waardoor er zoveel piloten ontslagen zijn. 2021 zal ik als het goed is mijn diploma ontvangen en daarna moet ik dan een speciaal examen doen wat zo'n 2 weken duurt doordat ik dan een havo diploma heb en geen vwo diploma. Maar is het dan nog wel slim om te proberen geselecteerd te worden voor de piloten opleiding doordat als ik dan de opleiding afgerond heb ik 2023 ik waarschijnlijk veel competitie heb met "laatst" ontslagen piloten die dus al meer ervaring hebben dan ik heb?
