Liv-wait on a smaller Rivian?!? BTW you are on Munro podcast and again on OOS! Way to go. Great podcast. Jordan I am really enjoying your content across the OOS channels. Thanks.
Thanks Lori!💙We reserved the R2 within minutes of it becoming available 😂 and I'm honestly really excited. Having a little time to cool down, my excitement is back for the R2 since who knows when/if the R3 will come and the R2 is honestly a suuuuper appealing package for us!
I love watching you guys hangout and talk about what looks like amazing EVs. Liv, I'm with you, I really like the R3 and I'm looking forward to hearing more about it.
One thing that both annoys me and has me skeptical is RJ's claim that R2 will have "hands-free" driver assist. That was said about R1. The earlier R1s even have an internal-facing IR camera for driver monitoring. Then they disabled that on existing vehicles, and removed it from later-build vehicles completely, and removed all mention of "hands free" from their website. (Humorously, they didn't remove it from their website until months after removing it from the vehicle.) So R2 will have the capability R1 was sold as "has the hardware for, will arrive soon via OTA update". This reversed claim also has me skeptical they will actually have it on R2.
While I love my Mach-E (waves at Patrick & Liz) the R3 will almost certainly replace my Mach-E in 3-5 years whenever it’s time to replace my Mach-E. (Either that or a Mach-E GT Rally. :-D )
Ironically, during the "reveal" for the R2 it seems as if the R3/R3X stole the show. While the R2 would suit my needs better, that R3X is really flipping cool.
Single motor small pack is less than 300. Honestly though over 2 years of DCFC growth means 270 should be fine if that’s highway. People are way too attached to range figures. We need to focus on infrastructure enough that even 200mi LFP cars are good enough.
For some people that's fine, living in Minnesota I would prefer 250miles range at 70mph and 0⁰f 300 summer should be about right for a primary vehicle much less is second vehicle territory in my book (like my Bolt EV).
@@davidwalker72I’m in WI and previous Mn. I agree with you for a primary vehicle. I wad thinking that for a daily commuter vehicle 300 doesn’t need to be the minimum like Jordan implied here. I think having a cheaper shorter range option is good for getting people into EVs.
I was really hoping for R2T. R3 is really cool, but it’s a concept. Hopefully Rivian can stay alive and start pumping out vehicles. Tough market out there right now!
R2, R3, R3X - very nice looking designs. I'm excited. But, I've been seeing commentary about how shaky Rivian's prospects are as a company. They're not yet making the R1T & R1S at scale so they can make money, and there even seems to be concern about their profitability with the delivery van. If all that is valid, are they making their situation worse by diversifying into even more vehicles already? I hope this works out for them!
I believe they will get there as long as cheap ass chinese production vehicles are kept out. Nobody can compete with slave labor and most consumers don't give a damn
Thanks for the discussion. We need to stop with the range fixation! It's more about charging speed. I'd rather charge faster and have a lighter vehicle. The other madness is the fascination with 0 to 60. This was started with Tesla to sell EV when everyone thought they were stodgey. Now it's all people talk about. The charge port location doesn't matter - the cables on superchargers are going to be retrofitted, (thank you Liv for saying that Rivian knows what they are doing!). Thanks for the discussion.
Jordan - FYI: Bury the hatchet means put your weapons away permanently; make peace. If Rivian had dropped the camp kitchen completely, they wouldn't have been burying the hatchet; not sure they'd be burying anything unless they were actively trying to make sure people forgot that it had ever been offered. Then, I'm not sure WHAT they'd be burying, but it wouldn't be a hatchet. "Dropping" or "abandoning" seem like better ways to express this idea. Just my 2 cents. Loved the whole discussion in general.
Liv is right. Less expensive. I drive a Bolt, the cheapest ev we have yet its loaded with features I have never had in any previous vehicle. A mid 40k vehicle is still to expensive for me
@@AnonymousFreakYT yes. I was so hoping that the NACS spec would require ports in a uniform location. I saw a mock up of the Ford NACS plug and it too is in the same location as the CCS plug. Pity.
I’m surprised by the charge port location. If there are bikes or other accessories hanging off the back, it will be difficult to charge at some locations (mainly SC).
I could see that the three motor vehicle having the 300 mile range and then the two and the single motor vehicles getting better than 300 mile range. This way they can easily say that all variants can do at least 300 miles.
You said bigger that EX30. To me it looks like the R2 is similar to an xc60 with r3 more similar to xc40/c40 in the Volvo lineup. Is that a close approximation of size class?
The R3 seems to be a bit smaller (161in long and 60in tall - estimated) than the XC40 (175in long and 65in tall) I think the R2 being Rivian’s XC60 and the R3 being it’s XC40 is a good way to think of it though
I'm not sure they have enough cash to get any of these products into the market. But they're very nice. I wouldn't hate if Apple decided to buy them (something they would never do - they don't buy big companies save for Beats) but it's not a crazy idea.
They did postpone building their Georgia factory, saving $2 billion, and are going to build R2 in their existing Illinois factory to start. That savings should give them enough financial runway to start mass production of R2 and become profitable. Then after couple quarters of profitability I figure they’ll restart the Georgia build to expand production and build the R3 there.
Yeah the base price is the smaller pack @ 270 miles of range which is still great .. like Tesla they are giving buyers a choice to pay less for a great car with a little less range
Bring on the R2 right hand drive for UK now please! A good size for over here. Funny you should make Volvo references, I feel like Volvo takes tesla features and make them worse, while Rivian is the other way. Have experienced the R1 family on US visits but sadly they are just simply too large to be of any use in the cities/towns over here.
It’s taken 5 years of install to get the V3 numbers we have now, I can’t see them replacing the installed dispensers in 2 years. New installs and damaged replacements sure. They are still installing V3 in new sites in Canada. Hope I’m wrong.
@@manitobasky , during the past year, they have installed 500 supercharger SITES in North America. They will likely add 750 sites in 2024, and 1125 sites in 2025. They've already said the base will have 270 mile range. So smaller battery pack.
I believe they have also said you can get a bigger battery pack with the single motor too.
By 2026, battery tech will have further advanced and will be cheaper. My bet is they all will be above 350 tho 400.
