Who says those e-readers have to have black and white screens like the Amazon Kindle? Kobo - out with their newest models that have color screens! This is an unboxing and demo of the budget friendly model - KoboClara Colour - with a 6" Color e-ink Touchscreen. Is this the future of e-readers?

I want to echo the sentiment - this is a really great video review of the device. This is especially so with not having the back light turned on, and having close up of the screen and text so we can see the quality of the e-ink screen in these circumstances. Many other review dismisses turning off the back light, but as you have already mentioned, you don’t/shouldn’t need it when there’s plenty of natural light. Thanks as this answers a lot of the questions I had.
Awesome. So glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!!
You didn't show how its performance when zooming, but I don't know whether it makes sense on such a little screen 🤔
When I get a new device I always try all the different settings.
Am looking for something for my 7.5 year old to read graphic novels on, and I think you’ve convinced me that this is the one! Thanks for a thorough tour.
For graphic novels, this would be perfect!!
Kobo was started and is still based in Canada and because we separated from Britain differently from the US we kept the word spellings so that's why kobo is called the Colour. 😃😃😃
All ereaders, including Kindles have "front lights" not back lights.
Thanks for the review! I pre-ordered day 1. Can't wait to get it!! Been reading on Kobo devices since they first came out.
Great review! This one has me sold.
Reordered my 1st e reader on the Clara e reader. Can't wait to receive mine! Good review 👍
Awesome. Glad it was helpful!!! Thanks for watching
Thanks looking forward to see the real thing. Could you please show a regular book on a Clara colour vs the old b/w version, with and without lighting ? We could see how the screen colour filter alter the text rendering. Tx
Wow the color Kobo's are gamechangers! Thank you for the closeups of the Clara color screen. I think it looks fantastic! I think it looks so good, I ordered one lol. Thank you for the great review!
Agree. Won't be surprised to see some color models from Amazon soon too.
Thank you for the review! I'm considering getting the Clara or the Libra, I've been using a kindle paperwhite (bought in 2018) and I'd like to know if the BW when reading is same / better / worse quality?
Thank you for the review guy!
Guy... Kirk. I respond to either. 😁😁 Thanks for watching.
do you have a kindle paper white to compare the screens? (e.g. the ZERO front light comparison would be great, to see the contrast, blacks, background whiteness, etc.)
Eink readers use a front light, not a back light.
Yes I was looking for this. Including kindle devices also use a front light, it makes a difference.
This is a great video! Have you noticed any lag or ghosting when highlighting and typing notes on this or the libra colour?
Not a ton of ghosting but a very slight lag. It's definitely still an eink screen.
@@TechItBeforeYouWreckIt that's helpful to know, thank you!
Best review of the Color so far❤
I gave a thumbs up for the comic showcase alone. The first that I'm aware of
Great review! 🥳✨ Just last night, there's a guy from Reddit I was having an argument with because he claims that the darkness of the screen can't be mitigated by the front light outdoors, as if he was saying the Kobo Color is unreadable with direct sunlight. He was also claiming that any old BW e-ink reader has better contrast than the Color and was using another person's comparison photos to support his claim when the real owner was all praises to the screen of Color. Really, some people out there make unreasonable efforts to stop people from getting this thing! Excited to get mine on April 30th.
So weird. I don't understand people who actively try to stop others from trying tech. Let me try it, I'll decide if I like it! 😁
I suspect they don’t have the money to buy it so have to convince themselves it’s rubbish.
I think some of them just bought a Libra 2 and are a tad salty so they gripe about contrast a bit. The Libra 2 and Clara 2e are excellent devices, but its totally okay to like these ones too, lol
@@katanabluebird Wow. A month went by so fast. I could say I am very satisfied with my purchase. I recently bought the metapen m2 stylus 2 with little expectation about the writing experience, but to my surprise writing in it is actually fun
Does hoopla app work on this?
Hopefully Amazon will pull its fingers out and bring a Kindle paper white colour screen edition
Great review, how much are they, you said budget friendly. I don’t know which one I will get, one the color kobos or the boox Palma……decisions decisions. 📚📚📚🤗
The Clara is 159,99€ and I believe the Libra 229,99€
I know normal books will show black & white text but do photos appear in colour in every book or just certain ones?
That is all dependent on the file. I haven't found any books that don't show color photos, but I would imagine older digital book files may have black and white photos., just depends on the source
I just bought mine today! It will be my first e-reader and luckily for me my interest in getting one came right on time for the launch of kobo colour. I cant wait to get my hands on it! For those who have used e-readers before, do you find it faster/easier to read?
I find I read faster because the e readers are portable and light so I read anywhere.
I just bought mine today as an impulse buy lol. I’ve never used one before, but how do you find yours?
How is reading during the day with the backlight turned off? I've seen comparisons and Libra 2 is much more readable.
I've seen the same arguments, but in my personal opinion it's pretty good. During the day. The black and white models might be out slightly darker, but I didn't know as much of a difference. Personally. I think it depends on what your expectations are, but I'm pretty happy with it during the day and at night.
Does is support any article reader such as pocket?
Yes it has Pocket. :)
Which one do you prefer - Clara color or Libra color?
Good question. I like the stylus and slightly larger screen of the libra. But .. there's something to be said about how compact the Clara is! I will say, screen quality feels exactly the same on both.
The compact form factor of the Clara Color, plus its improved speed and new color feature, is a game changer for readers. However, I prefer the Libra Color since the screen is bigger, which is better for reading comics with small speech bubbles and PDF files, such as textbooks, which naturally have smaller texts. Landscape mode enables comfortable PDF reading in Libra
You didn't show its performance when zooming, but it may not makes sense on such a little screen 🤔
very good and concise video, i wanted to point out that when you turn down the brightness you dont ctually turn down the natural light down (the second slider )so the back lights are not actually completly off, can you do a short video with them both at 0% then at 10%, 20% and so on ?
The natural light is for the colour tone so when he takes off the brightness it isn't in effect.
The bottom slider is for warm light percentage (orange light) the one responsible for brightness is the first slider, which changes light intensity.
Will a Kobo Clara 2E case fit on this?
I'm not sure, I don't have one to test unfortunately sorry
Yes, I have it and it’s perfect
Hello. I have watched so many videos of the Kobo colour eReaders & no one has demonstrated the Bluetooth audio feature😭. I have dyslexia & am only realising 5%-17% of the world population has dyslexia, so I have niche accessibility needs. So I unfortunately have to look for features that can provide the best accessibility in whatever capacity that looks like on these machines. Things I look for:
Audio books, ability to read pages if audio books aren’t available for a book, font customisation (this is vital for dyslexia, as line spacing & font size really helps us follow along with a path better when reading) & the ability to control the speed of the audio.
Are these features available? It would be a hard pass to not have these accessibility features. It is definitely a reason why I haven’t purchased anything, yet. B/c I don’t have the information to feel confident in purchasing.
The doubt that everyone has about this and which still hasn't been clarified by anyone is this: reading a black and white book with this Kobo, at zero percent brightness (with sun light or light house), is it darker than a Kobo of any other model in white and black?
Yes it is darker. No way of getting around that with a colour screen. I upgraded from the Clara HD to the Clara Colour and its definitely darker with the back light off but I don't care. I don't really notice unless they're side by side. The colours are lovely, and dark mode is fricken awesome too! :D
@@bee_mailey thanks, meanwhile, after my post (more or less a couple of days later) and before your, I have bought Kobo Clara colour ahah. I could not resist! 😁
@@Fabios__ hahaha cool! And what’s the verdict? Do you like it? Do you think it’s too dark? Or do you agree with my comments?
@@bee_mailey well, actuality I still have not received the product. I haven't received the delivery order yet. I bought directly from the store Kobo. But surely I'll bring you up to date! 😁
@@bee_mailey Kobo arrived. initially the low brightness bothered me a lot. In sunlight it is really irrelevant and it seems that the screen is not illuminated at all by sunlight. We need to get used to it and never turn on an old black and white Kobo again. Once you accept this step, you can appreciate the newness of the colors which is wonderful. The peek-a-boo cover is gorgeous. It seems we have made a notable technological leap forward. Browsing your library and seeing colors is also satisfying. Reading a color comic is amazing!
Ia kobo android based? Would i be able to download the Kindle app amd access my existing library?
Sorry not sure how this all works.
I read somewhere that it's actually Linux based. Not sure where I saw that though.
No you can't download any apps onto it. But you could convert your books to epub and side load them. And you can access your library ebooks.
You have the natural light (orange) almost at 100%. Check what you’re doing, please.
It was actually set to auto.
@@TechItBeforeYouWreckItThe orange light was almost at the max
That's some crusty fingers
Thank you for turning the backlight off. I think it is the same with the Kobo Libra Colour. That is what I want to know. 🤎
Exactly the same. Screen seems identical except for size.
