I'll go in Egypt in 4 weeks from now , we'll travel a bit as well to Giza ,then down south to Hurgada , watching your vidios give me some toosl to stay safe out there , I believe Egypt it is amazing and most of peoples are good peoples. Absolutely, most people are good! Kind, friendly, and helpful. As soon as I was robbed and after chasing after those kids (to no avail) I stopped and flagged down the first person I saw that was driving past. The man on motorbike stopped right away. My Arabic is pretty bad and he didn't speak English, but he pointed me in the direction of the police station and expressed his sympathy and me being robbed (I was mostly miming what happened 😅). Most Egyptians are very friendly and helpful, and theft isn't a big issue here like it is in other countries, these were just some dumb young kids making bad life choices. I'm sure you're going to have an incredible time here, and so happy to hear my vlogs are helpful! Thanks for your support ❤ from warmer Egypt 😅😎

Hey, I'm American of Egyptian heritage. If you don't mind me looking out for a homie. Don't drink anything but bottle water. Avoid fresh veggies and fruits because it's usually not washed and sanitized.
Don't engage with hustlers and vendors, JUST IGNORE THEM-yeah be an a**hole for your own good.
Enjoy the beach in Hurghada-it's my favorite city.

I am Canadian too and was lucky to visit last year when the visa thing was much easier. Guess took you a whole month to get the visa?
don't feel sad. you are helping to cleanup the streets of Egypt. stealing a phone, he could steel your money, your identity and goodness knows what else. hopefully he will learn his lesson and not harm another tourist or fellow Egyptian. being poor is no excuse to brake the law. he has a family, a home and food and a means of transportation. that is more then i can say for the poor and disadvantaged here in Canada and the United States. thanks for sharing.

Hi dear Giselle, l have been robbed in Alexandria almost 20 years ago, but the good thing was that a shop owner came out of his kiosk and caught the little boy that did it. Immediately the neighborhood got the little boy and they started to beat him and l got my bag back. I felt sorry for him because he was so small and most likely, very poor, but it showed me how helpful those people were, towards forrigners❤.
That's sad. Yeah, they don't take theft lightly. Most Egyptians are very helpful and friendly so this incident is not reflective of the vast majority, of course. It can happen anywhere in the world, and definitely does more often in other countries.

Sounds like you got lucky. But seeing has how you only spent a short time there, whereas she lives there, she sees more of this. Egypt has a lot of issues, and if you're not cautious or don't have a reliable guide, you can easily run into trouble.
@@bwabwa8810 Well, not to be argumentative bwabwa, but as you can see in my above comment, I actually do think Egypt is very safe, especially when compared to other countries. This is the first time I've seen, experienced, or even heard about a theft since I have been living here. Sure, I've heard stories about how people were robbed or almost robbed, but the stories I hear from people (like my Arabic teacher, for example) are from many years ago, like 2011, as an example from my Arabic teacher. Of course, thefts happen, it's a large country with millions of people, and Cairo itself is the 6th largest city in the world. But when I think about those facts, when I consider how long I've been living here running around the country solo, and the amount of thefts and other petty crimes I've witnessed here (zero, aside from my recent experience), it's very low. To contrast, I lived in Vietnam for a short while, and in the span of 3 months in Saigon, I met no less than NINE people from my hostel who were robbed by motorbike bag snatchers near a popular walking street where tourists frequent. I lived in NYC for several years and saw multiple thefts (people grabbing bags and running, snatching phones from people's hands on the subway and escaping through the doors right before they closed). Even in my own home state, thefts are not uncommon. Multiple neighbors had their homes broken into, my friend's car window was smashed and things inside stolen SEVEN TIMES in 3 months. Rome has a bad reputation for pickpockets (though thankfully I never experienced it myself). I could go on and on. Point is, of course nowhere is absolutely safe, but I do feel Cairo and Egypt in general is a lot safer than many other places I have been to in the world. But I do agree one should always remain alert, cautious and aware, no matter where you are in the world. To be safe, it is wise to be vigilant about these things.

Gigi, I just returned from a 2 week tour of Egypt and felt well prepared due to your videos. Even so I left with a profound sense of sadness. The constant barrage of vendors and scam artists left me incapable of actually connecting with real Egyptian people. Most of the time when I would open up I would find myself in an uncomfortable situation. Eventually, I just shut down, hence the bad feelings. You are great at what you do.
I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience here. The vendors are definitely worse in touristic areas, and I know it can be tiring.

I travelled alone from Ontario Canada to AZ and back but in an 1975 Dodge Empress 14' truck rv. Did get robbed once at a truck stop tracked them to motel started listening at doors then thought WTF am I doing!! Moved on that was the only time.
I am Egyptian and I live in Egypt and I love all your videos and watch them constantly. Let me tell you some advice: do not forgive the man who stole your phone because if you forgive him, he will steal again and steal from someone else. They are not good people. Please call the police and the judiciary to punish him so that this does not happen again. . I am Egyptian, and I tell you that these types of people can kill, steal, or do horrible things, and there will be no camera recording them. Do not forgive them and throw them in prison. I am happy that you got your phone back again and continue to provide interesting videos. You are in your country, Egypt. Most people are good. I hope you are always safe and we are sorry for what happened ❤️

I am just finishing up our trip in Egypt with friends and decided to use a local guide in Luxor since we came without participating in a travel group. He told us that the government has a policy in place not allowing tourists to travel alone by car on the roads at night. Whenever we left our hotel, the guide checked us out and back in saying that the police would track our movements for that day for our safety. We also went through many check points on the Provincial Road between Dandera and Luxor. I didn’t feel unsafe but was glad we hired a guide. He made a world of difference for us in having a wonderful trip.
I don't think you need a tour guide while touring Egypt. Being alone is much better.
That's great, I'm glad to hear you're having a wonderful time! I don't drive between cities at night, not because I am not allowed to, but because I don't like driving at night, it's hard to see the roads, especially in stretches with no street lamps. However, the police actually escort foreigners driving in their own vehicle no matter the time of day; be it morning, afternoon or night. I drove my motorcycle across the entire country last year (from Cairo to Abu Simbel) and was forced to have a police escort many times. As a solo traveler who wants to explore on my own (that's the whole point of me going on a solo motorbike trip), I found it quite annoying to be escorted by the police. I understand it is for safety reasons, and if anything bad should happen to that foreigner traveling solo, it would be very bad for tourism, but it is still very annoying for multiple reasons I won't list here. Anyways, I managed to cross the country for the most part solo, despite the countless police checkpoints that insisted I have an escort, and nothing bad happened on that trip even while solo (which was a fair amount of the trip). Regardless of the escorts, traveling Egypt is amazing, I always have a great time, and I'm glad to hear you did too! ❤

Gosh! I’m sorry this happened to you but I’m glad you are safe and didn’t pursue these idiots too far on your bike. You could have gotten into another motorcycle accident which would have not been worth it.

BTW, there are Phone Holder Brackets that can be fitted behind the motorcycle windshield above the speed meter in the middle, so basically between the windshield and you, where you can have your phone attached to it for navigation, which makes snatching it harder
I know, I have been wanting to do that since this happened. Still haven't gotten around to it (or mounting a camera I have on the bike), but eventually that is my plan. Thankfully, I normally don't have problems driving around, even though my phone is out. Theft isn't a huge problem here, not when compared to other countries I have traveled in

This theft must have been quite a shock for you, because I know how much you love Egypt and its people.
You looked shattered and upset after you had got your phone back at the police station. Please don't reproach yourself for reporting the theft. It was the right thing to do in the circumstances, especially as you had the visual evidence.
Not sure about the motives of the family, but the whole incident naturally left you feeling emotional. Knowing your outlook on life, however, I am sure you felt much better the next morning!

I did my Bachelor's in Alexandria for three years. Since then I been in many countries. However, still there's special place for Egypt in my heart. I also know sometimes it can get very tough in there. like being on a roller coaster.

I did! Everything was there, they just threw away the sim card and phone case, but that doesn't matter at all, those things can be replaced.
@@Gventures friendly reminder: you can recover your sim card using your passport as a proof of ownership. Just head to carrier store and they will give you another sim card with the same phone number.

You know, I would struggle with feeling bad for the kid and his family too. I understand your remorse at the end of the video. Please remember, you didn’t wrong the thieves- you are the victim. They made the choice, for whatever reason, to steal from you. You protected yourself and stood up for what was yours. I have lived in Italy and the US, and there are no lack of thieves in either of those countries. I hope you can shake this off and continue to provide valuable content!

I am an Egyptian American and I am very happy you made safe to your hotel (I don’t know if this is a room in a hotel or a room in a prison, LOL). Don’t feel sorry for the kids. They must learn the hard way not to do that again. I do have some advice; you showed some ugly streets in Egypt and the Egyptian authorities don’t like that. If they find out, it would not be good for you. I have known people who got their phones confiscated for taking pictures of ugly sites in Egypt. Sorry for the incident. Be careful sister and enjoy. But I think I may have shown quite a few "ugly" streets in my 2.5 years of living here and making videos....Garbage City, Animal market, camel market, to name a few....🤷♀️ I show the good, the bad and the ugly. I just show Egypt. And I love this country. Most of my experiences are positive, thankfully.

Wow, you want to learn some Arabic! Bravo. I unfortunately don't know of any language schools, for almost 2 years I was just speaking to people here on the street and learning that way, and then just recently I started seeing a private tutor. But I've never actually looked into schools. I have a friend who signed up for a course a while back, but it was in downtown, it was expensive, and she told me she didn't actually learn very much 😅 At least, not in the way she wanted to. Where are you from?

Whatever happened to that kid is not your fault, I know poverty drives a lot of this petty crimes but many people in Egypt still do with very little.. so no excuse. You are good soul.. As an Egyptian don’t feel sorry for the thief. He had it coming. If you drop the case he would be probably be snatching phones on the next day. And phones are not cheap in Egypt they are one to few months salary. So he would have probably hurt lots of other people

I'm glad you got the phone back. most thieves the police has like a database with their information and once you had the plate number of the motorcycle . it's easy to track them and get the phone back. stay safe please and sorry you had to deal with this experince !

Yeah most people come here and travel with little to no issues! I've actually been living here for 2.5 years and can confidently say that Egypt suffers from petty crimes like theft far less often than many other countries around the world. But theft can happen anywhere, it's just people.
@@Gventures Nice people on the whole but as you say couple bad eggs in every country. I had a bloke bothering me in Alexandria and a couple blokes at a barber shop sorted him out for me.
You know even in Europe it happens, the most right thing that you went to the Police. I’m glad you are okay and you got your phone back. Oh yeah, I would say it actually happens a lot more in the US, Europe, South America, etc. In my experience, Egypt is generally very safe when compared to other countries I have been to, but of course thieves exist everywhere and these things can happen. As I'm applying moral algebra on my decision to travel or not to Egypt, I stumbled on your page during some research. You have put me at ease and made me research the decision to go-ahead with the plan. Traveling to SE Asia via Doha and a Middle East country visit sounds accommodating. I just ordered a couple history books on Egypt to go enhance my experience. Touts are to be expecting in many countries and I've come across many. Guatemala was probably the worst I've experienced so far and I'll have to up my game shaking them off without being insulting. I suppose that will be part of the experience and just roll with it. ......... Thanks for the information you've provided on this channel. It's helped. I plan to visit for ~8 days. Alexandria, Nile cruise and classic sites are being planned. Any recommendations ? I'll be traveling with my wife who thinks she's Cleopatra 😁
Haha, yes you will definitely just have to roll with it. I think you don't have to be too nice, just not an asshole 😅 I engage a lot, but I would probably recommend most people to not do that when walking through markets and things like that. Just smile, don't even make eye contact, don't stop walking, put your hand over your heart with a little nod and keep moving. Anyways, you're right it's part of the experience, and I love the markets, hectic places that they are.
I am not sure about what recommendations I can give...I don't really know your itinerary. Are you planning this trip by yourself or are you planning to hire guides or tour companies? 8 days will go by quick, and the cruise might be a few of those days, so hard to give some useful tips at the moment...but I have made a lot of videos about Cairo, and most of what I like in Cairo I have already made videos about. Citadel of Salah el Din (my favorite part is actually the view of the city once you exist Mohammed Ali Mosque), Old City Gate of Cairo (Bab Zuweila-there are a few others but so far this one is my favorite). Mummy museum is cool (National Museum of Egyptian Civilization). Also Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is good, has lots of stuff.
We're looking at 10 days max. We'd like to incorporate some tours as I believe in the value of a good guide. We just returned from Costa Rica & did the cloud forest on or own and didn't see the fauna ... but we heard them. When we went to the rain forest/beach we got a guide and finally saw the fauna including that elusive Sloth. I think a guide is worth it, especially if Egypt is serious about certification. We'll be arriving from weeks in Thailand where guides are totally useless in my many travels there. ........ I've been to the Egypt permanent exhibit at the Met in NYC and the King Tut exhibit on tour in Fort Lauderdale many years ago. Museums are definitely in the plans. ....... Who knows, if you are available for hire to show us around Cairo, and maybe we can work something out. 😁 I'm still working on our whole itinerary and probably get the air purchased by next week. In the meantime, I'll continue to binge on your videos.
@@siamiam4306 Oh, I'd make a terrible guide 🤣I actually tried it out with a few people but decided I didn't like it, it's just not for me. Long, exhausting days. And I don't know the history like a guide would anyway. But it does depend on the reputation of the guide. Obviously, find someone credible, with reviews, etc. There's guides you can find outside museums and ancient sites, and then their are the real ones. Get a real one if you want your moneys worth 😄

That is why I always say when someone asks if Egypt is safe, it can be so safe or so unsafe should you exist at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people!
You never know one could be in one of this situations out of the blue in Egypt and that is why safety there is very contingent!

Sorry this happened to you. Let them suffer the consequences of their actions. They will never learn unless they pay a price whatever that price may be under Egyptian law. Most of all I am glad there was no violence and no one was hurt. By the footage I can tell this wasn’t their first time
Yeah, it absolutely wasn't their first time. It all happened in a matter of minutes, and no first time thief makes the decision to do that that quickly, or with such skill. I'm glad they didn't knock me off my bike, that scared me for a second. Then I was just pissed 😅 I do feel bad for their family though...that sucks.

Egyptian police are very efficient when they want to be, especially if you are either; a) a foreigner, b) know someone on the inside, or c) make a huge fuss and threaten to get everyone in the station arrested by your imaginary uncle who works in the secret services :D
Jokes aside, I never had to deal with police in my life except here in America when my bike was stolen (Bicycle). I had video footage and everything, and they took a statement, labelled it as Larceny instead of theft because they considered the bike worth less than $300 even though I had proof it sold retail for a thousand (I bought it from a garage sale for $40 LOL), and then told me they will keep in touch. That was nine years ago and I still never heard back from them since lmao.

I had issues with getting on local intercity trains they just wouldn't sell me a ticket. They kept telling me to go on the tourist train suppose they don't want the hassle when stuff goes wrong.

The changing of seats was very impressive by the boys. Maybe when they get out of jail they could get a job in the circus. Seriously you did the right thing in reporting them. They put you in danger. You could have easily come off the bike when it was happening. It is good that they learned now that you don't take people's stuff. While I know you didn't enjoy the drive to the police station, I did enjoy seeing Egypt's back streets. It is like traveling back in time.

Every single Egyptian I have spoken to about this (and I have spoken to A LOT of Egyptians), including my boyfriend and friends, have said the police would not have bothered getting the phone back, simply because they are Egyptian. The police put more effort into the case because I am a foreigner, and that is a fact. Obviously, because I had the crime on video with their license plate number and their faces, it made a huge difference (I already say in the video it would have been pointless to report it without that), but the police would still not have cared or done as much had it been an Egyptian.

WOW, Last video, I told you that the police would capture them in less than 24H , and they did. The police in Egypt is very powerful. The reason that their family was waiting for you is not to harm you at all:, they can't. More likely, they wanted to beg you to forgive their sons because they might've been charged of terrorism against a tourist; they could spend the rest of their lives in prison. Egypt is a touristic country and anyone would think to threat the tourism, they will be charged of terrorism. Any way, thanks God you and your phone are safe.
Yeah it was long one day, from filming at Meidum Pyramid to Lahun and Hawara, then Fayoum City, and as I was leaving, this happened. But they did catch them very quickly, I was honestly shocked. My bf is Egyptian and he warned me the family would be there, but he also said they could retaliate. It's why the police sent an escort with me back to Tunis village where I was staying. The kid (the one who was 16, the younger was 15) is being punished, but thank God not some crazy punishment like terrorism. He is young and dumb and made a bad choice. I hope he learns from this and doesn't rob any more people, he can still turn his life around.

Is your phone working? Soooooo glad that you had a good outcome from this frightening story. As you recall, in November, my passport and $500 were stolen from me on the train in Athens. And I ended up flying to Cairo, then taking an Uber to Alexandria to catch my cruise ship. Been there...done that...including two police stations!! Like you, I created a podcast about my adventure. I am happy that you are safe and that the police want to escort you from place to place in Egypt. That's a good thing! PS. I just received my permanent 10-year passport, replacing the emergency one I received from the US Embassy in Athens. The travel insurance company paid me a third of what I had spent that ill-fated weekend. Oh well. I stayed safe and still had a great time. Keep traveling my friend!!! 🌹
Yes my phone is working fine 👌 They just threw the case and SIM card away, but those are replaceable, I don't care about that. I do remember that happening to you in Athens, definitely not a great experience! But I am glad you were able to figure everything out and continue your trip! I actually don't like the police escorting me around everywhere I go (because I like solo travel), but after this incident it was good that they escorted me back to my village. Yes the Egyptian police actually catch criminals and solve crimes. Here in Canada your car gets stolen and sold overseas. A dude here had air tags on his truck that was stolen. Called police. The truck was left to be shipped to dubai and was sold there. Police here are a joke. Kids were stupid. Betcha the kids regret it. Good you reported it. Egypt is safe for the most part. Petty crime is everywhere but it is good to stay somewhat cautious. Not everybody is kind or well intentioned and the inflation and increasing poverty will see theft rise. Stay safe Gigi!
