  • Clyde Football Club have been nomadic for a number of years. Originally from Glasgow, they played for 88 years at Shawfield Stadium.
    Shawfield is now sadly abandoned.
Since moving out in the mid 1980s, they shared with Hamilton Accies & Partick Thistle before moving into Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld. Now they've left Cumbernauld and they're back in Hamilton!
What next for this historic, old club?!

Check out two grounds in Accrington, Lancashire. Accrington FC played in the original English Football League from 1888 - 1892 in the top tier of English football and played at the home of the current Accrington Cricket Club. The newly formed Accrington Stanley 1891 - 1966 played at Peel Park (around the corner from Stanley Street where the club was founded at a working mans clubs on that street), around a quarter to half a mile from the original ground in the second/third tier. The latter still has small banks that show the history of the original ground. My son played his home games at Peel Park and though I am not from Accrington (lived their for a few years) it felt pretty special watching him play on a pitch that held so much history.

I have photos of my dad playing against Rangers, Celtic and all the clubs in the top flight. My favourite photo is of my dad defending his goal against Celtic in the Glasgow Cup final at Hampden. Clyde won 2-1, the attendance was 109,000. So for my dads involvement I always have a soft spot for Clyde and follow their results. It’s very emotional seeing inside the old stadium where my dad played. Keep going Sam, your vlogs are always interesting.

In season 1966-67 when Celtic and Rangers were two the best teams in Europe (Celtic won the European Cup and Rangers reached the final of the Cup-Winners Cup) they finished first and second in Scottish League Division 1 respectively; Clyde were third. Clyde were denied the chance to play in Europe in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup because Rangers were already in that competition and only one team from an individual city was allowed. Billy King kept the stadium open but never really spent any money on it hence it looks virtually the same as it did in the 70s. There's now no dog racing left in Scotland. The nearest track now from Shawfield is Newcastle. Now that Billy King is dead, it's inevitable the stadium will be demolished, most probably houses will be built there. Clyde were able to play in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup as only one team per city could compete. Given Shawfield was officially in Rutherglen they were able to compete

The opposite, we tried to say we were Rutherglen, but the main stand fell within Glasgow, so we couldn't compete in it

East Kilbride was begging for them to move there in the 60s. Big mistake. This was the first stadium I visited, in the 1960/61 season. Thanks for doing it.

It's sad to see a very long slow demise of a football club like Clyde. They do need a permanent home to be able to give the club a long term future

Far too many clubs in this country, one of the reasons the league's are so bad and Scotland is so rubbish.
Seriously think we only need 32 teams and two leagues.
Too many pointless teams which can't legitimately call themselves professional, Elgin, Peterhead, Stirling, Dumbarton, Raith, Montrose, Arbroath, Forfar, Brechin, Stranraer, Allow etc.

I remember being at the old Airdrie stadium in Coatbridge at the last game before everyone chipped in to destroy it. I even got a piece of the turf and put it in the garden at home. I can still remember the guys bouncing on the goalposts.

Sucha a shame. Sad that the former owner died, but his riches were barely invested in the ld ground. Any fans od scottish football or Glasgow architecture in general, should visit the stadium befor eit's too late. It'll be unimaginative an housing scheme before long. Nicer area that Parkhead and easily gobbled up by developers.

Wonderful video but I felt very sad after seeing this. Another in the long line of great stadiums no longer in use or simply consigned to history. I don't know the history of Clyde FC but it seems very similar to many of the smaller clubs in England who struggle year by year just to keep afloat. Is there no way the ground can be renevated with the joint effort of the fans and the local council as it would be a travesty if yet another bit of Glasgow history went.
