Why This Unusual Transatlantic Route Exists

- Condor Airlines of Germany operates a seasonal transatlantic flight between Frankfurt and Whitehorse, once a week between June and September.
Sounds like a normal seasonal flight, except for the fact that Whitehorse is home to just 25,000 people.
In today's video, I explore why this unusual transatlantic route exists!

We are very happy about this connection as well! :)
Frankfurt Airport ich liebe sie
Hopefully you can convince LH to eventually up the seasonal YOW-FRA to year-round (and daily in summer) that they're taking over from AC.
@gerard henry They do but it's not a direct flight. Lufthansa and Thai Airways do direct flights Frankfurt to Bangkok
He actually did it the absolute mad man hahaha
This route is crazy. Locals must love it becuase they can use Germany as a connection to flights to the rest of Europe 😊
Not really I live in Whitehorse. I flew to Frankfurt quite a bit and I rather fly to YYZ and take Lufthansa out The Condor flight to Whitehorse Yukon is a pretty bare bones flight. It's a long time to go without inflight entertainment and the small and expensive meals they offer. The YXY Condor flight is used basically exclusively by Germans.
I actually find it annoying that it's easier for me to get to Germany than it is to get to Toronto
@@selkirk4life Actually Condor does offer In-flight Entertainment since a few years already. And the last time I checked, transatlantic flights had a meal included in all fares.
@@selkirk4life entertainment and meals included since 2001
Not really. We flew to Vancouver and fly from there. It is cheaper and better than Condor. Plus one ticket to destination means more luggages. With Condor we can't do that.
I didn't know this route existed until now! Great video.
Me neither! And I agree it was a great video!
Sorry but Thomas cook is insolvent I’m afraid so I don’t think it’s flying anymore
@@markdoble6856 it's not Thomas Cook it is Condor from Germany and they are still in operation.
@@markdoble6856 Condor is still flying. They were not affected by the end of Thomas Cook Great Britain.
Yes,,,even from France to Jamaica
Two summers ago I noticed this peculiar route and decided to give it a try. I flew out of Whitehorse to Frankfurt, and was probably one of maybe 3 Canadians on board. The rest of the flight was German tourists, it surprised me how much they all spoke of how much they loved Canada and the Yukon. Truly one of the most unique flight experiences I've had.
And you got the retro livery too
JBS that livery is beautiful! So simple and clean
It’s almost accidentally good. Like some amateur desktop publisher had three minutes to invent an airline, dragging the current font down to slap on a mock-up fuselage. “Yeah, Eagle, no wait ... Condor.” Yellow tail, blue line, steal a logo from somewhere, done!
Yes! But my they did do a beautiful job.
Got to fly on the Condor Retro 767 on exactly this route in September for just 99,99€ and even got an exit row seat for free - Thanks to the nice staff for making this one of my best flights so far!
How did you get the ticket so cheap?
@@tibor29 this does sound very cheap, but airline market in Europe is extremely competitive and tickets are generally cheap. I can fly from London to nearly anywhere in Europe for 20 pounds. I flew once from London to Oslo and the return trip was 15 pounds only. Journey to the airport was much more expensive.
99,99€...in our Canadian dollar that would be $16,000🥴🥴😂😂
@@tibor29 As it was the last flight of the season, there simply was not much demand, except for the flight back to Frankfurt (it was pretty much full), so I guess they wanted to at least make a smaller loss by artificially creating demand through low prices. However 99,99€ is still VERY cheap for a carrier like Condor on an almost 10h flight, so it could have been a mistake fare, which often happens - There are even websites, where you can sign up for error fare-alerts!
I dont know so just wanting to be taught, how come yall use a comma instead of a decimal for money? A comma doesnt make much sense.
Wow, didn’t know Condor operates this route. Great video, man ☺️
WOW- Hi flight channel, I love your videos :D
The local bears are also big fans of the Condor flights. "Those German tourists are delicious. Please send more."
😄 *One* good catch and it keeps you filled for weeks to come.
As the Yukon bears call them: "Meals on wheels" especially when they have a menue on the rear window (family sticker with Names)😉😁
We kept reminding them not to turn off your cars when you see bears. They are deadly not cute😡.
Best German food in the north and delivered fresh. Baby bear says they're not too hot and not too cold aNd taste JUST RIGHT. 😲😈😉
Specially the ones who started to eat Big Mc
Half as interesting has entered the chat
Bendover Productions would like to know our location
“Why this route is the most profitable in the world.”
I was expecting some unusual reason, but the reason is just "people want to go there, so there is demand". Just like 99% of the other flights out there.
Thanks, you saved me 5 minutes. :)
Says law: Supply creates demand.
@@taylorc2542 That is something of a half-truth arguably supply merely realises demand rather than creating the demand in the first place that is to say the supply converts potential demand into actual demand. Of course, some of that potential demand may also have been demand for products that your product is substitutable for so in that sense one could say it created demand for your product but still, demand existed they are simply settling for the option that exists over their initial preference in that instance. As an analogy, if I were to offer a room full of people a tray of hamburgers I would realise the demand from people that wanted a burger but also from other people who desired other food but were hungry enough to consider hamburgers an acceptable substitute but I'm really not going to get much interest from the people that are simply not hungry right now no matter how large the tray of hamburgers I bring in they simply do not desire the product at this time supply or not.
But there is a reason - there's some kickass weed in Whitehorse and it's probably legal as well! lol jk
@@mickeypopa weed is legal in canada, i don't know if its any good in whitehorse though lol
You can thank the Fulda Tire company for the German tourists. They sponsored the Yukon Quest in the late nineties and spent a lot of money promoting it back home. The Yukon has been a German/European tourist destination ever since. Condor used to do a triangle route with ANC at first, alternating directions. But with the tighter security requirements it was changed to the current configuration (due to crew duty days apparently). The terminal in Whitehorse was expanded to handle the flights a few years ago. Really nice piece Alex.👍
Thank-you for providing these little known details about Whitehorse. Since viewing Alex's post, I have done some research into Whitehorse and the information you provided is refreshingly welcome, and is not included in anything I have read so far.
Don’t let the Dutch know about this or else the Yukon roads will be clogged with camper trailers.
The roads are already clogged with campers between us locals, the thousands of American tourists in their rvs and all the germans on the condor flights renting rvs.
Sorry you are now to late 😅.
Hahaha. The oranjes
Time to takes notes and inform my fellow dutch brethren
Caravans as we call it. 🇳🇱
"Flights to Whitehorse for summer 2020 are open for booking, so it seems this bizarre route will live on". Well... RIP.
Northern Canada is stunningly beautiful. Period.
I really want a trip report of another peculiar route, despite having large cities at either end, it is less than 1/3 full on most flights, and they fly it twice weekly. It is Azerbaijan Airlines' (AZAL) New York City (JFK)-Baku (GYD) route. They only fly this for promoting the economy, as the airline is 100% government owned. But I am interested to see what that is like.
I believe they have cancelled the service unfortunately. It was too unprofitable
@@Avionicx they resumed it. Azerbaijan's tourism industry really benefits. It will be flying at least through summer 2020
I would like it if all of Canada could appreciate the beauty of our north. I hope to travel there soon.
I've got a tip for you, If you go this time of year, when you land and the cabin door opens and it's really cold outside, DON'T GET OFF!!!!!!!!!!
I've been to all three of Canada's territorial capitals and it's pretty amazing, especially Whitehorse/Yukon.
Toronto - We The North
@@vintagesupermarkets5210 I just went to Yukon for the first time in 2018. We drove from GVA to Watson Lake, Yukon. That was a unique gem that we didn't expect. Our plan was to go to Whitehorse but my car problems did not help. I should have listened to my instinct to not take my car and take someone else's.
Our crew was a mix of Canadians, Americans, some Dutch and a German.
I agree but I find it hard to justify the money when I could pretty much travel anywhere
My job takes me to some of the most remote places in Canada. This video explains why I often randomly run into Germans near Yukon and northern BC especially.
Of course it’s a highly requested shift.
If there is only one flight per week, that means the crew has a 7 days paid vacation ;-)
I doubt whether a Condor airliner is sitting on a Whitehorse tarmac more than a few hours to refuel with a return flight on the same day in the other direction with one flight per week during the summer...
You're right. The Aircraft will head back to Germany after a few stop. But the crew won't. The crew stays there for a week and has their shift on the flight back a week later.
@@MrMoccachinoo surly they get flown out to another airport in the region where they catch an inbound flight to bring it home, no?
@@dhlehrenlos
No. Who will than do the shift on the flight back?
@@MrMoccachinoo the crew from another flight. Heck it would be cheaper to fly a second crew with them rather than leaving them there for a week. But i dont know how they operate so dunno
I’d love to see a trip report on that route!
CJets I flew Condor on that particular route once. The flight is awesome!
yeah like that guy Wingin' It! Paul Lucas channel
It's nice to see home! I have heard from many people that German culture sees the Yukon and the gold rush history as magical and mythical, and many Germans coming to Whitehorse say that it's a life-long dream to visit.
And they do the visit well! I've paddled the the Yukon river up to Dawson and most of the other groups we encountered were German (and a few French). You'll find them on many trails and mountain tops, up in the gold fields, and out fishing on the lakes. The Yukon is so unbelievably large and uninhabited that you notice the few people you run in to.
Those are great shots of the city Alex, and you must make a effort to get up there during the winter. It's quite a different experience.
We asked some of the Germans we met paddling the river why there were so many of their countrymen doing the same. They said everyone read Jack London and it became their dream to experience the adventure.
Had no idea. Have flown Condor several times from YHZ to FRA. Good service. Interesting video, thx Alex!
Wow, I never knew this route (and the others like it) existed! As a flight simmer, it sure does give me some ideas for bringing big birds into small towns for the amazing scenery!
It's absolutely beautiful up there!! In 1965 we took a family trip up the Alcan Highway. I can still hear my Mom saying 'BREATHTAKING' throughout the entire ride.... Interesting video!!
Yep, Condor is the only company offering regular flights between Frankfurt and Anchorage. Love them for those flights.
I love your presentation style. You do mention all the relevant general information that allows me to focus on the more specific topics you talk about.
Alex please keep making this kind of videos! They’re incredibly informative and pretty cool to watch!
Number 1 all condor staff is really nice so of course they answered. They are not rude.
Number 2 the German government stept in after the Thomas Cook crash so that condor will continue! Don't be hesitant to buy tickets.
Number 3 what a enormous range. Wow.
Number 4 im fascinated how far I can go from Frankfurt Airport infront of my city bad Homburg
And 5 great video
@ Marc beebee
Condor flies holiday tourists, is not a scheduled service. So everything is more relaxed.
Wonder if that means the crew get a 1 week layover? If so, no wonder it's a popular route for the crew!
I doubt whether a Condor airliner sits on a Whitehorse tarmac more than a few hours to refuel for a return flight with one flight per week. You need one coming and one going, they use the same plane... Logistics! At best the crew gets a night's sleep at Whitehorse.... The human element....
I assume they change crews between their other destinations in Canada/Alaska, so the layover is probably 2-3 nights
@@ronclark9724 the crew would get a week off. the crew that took the previous week's flight into Whitehorse would take the 767 back to Frankfurt and the crew that brought the flight in would crew the following week's flight.
The crew from the flight from Frankfurt to Whitehorse is going to Vancouver and a Day Kater Back to Germany with an other Plane.
Sebastian Knaupp not true, I am cabin crew for condor and haven’t flown here yet but when we fly to other long haul destinations that we only serve weekly we stay at the destination for a week and get paid for it then fly the aircraft back to Germany the week later, it just simplifies things as it would cost a lot to guarantee 10 seats on a flight to a different airport every week and probably costs about the same.
Thanks for publishing this. The video quality is excellent and your narration was clear and concise providing lots of fun facts. I've been an "industry geek" for most of my life and I have (unfortunately) wasted some CZcams time watching some horrendous aviation/airline videos that the content producers had no business making.
Condor has several unusual routes. I flew this year with Condor Non-Stop to Dar-Es-Salaam in Tansania.
This video was very interesting. Good job on the graphics. Thanks for all your hard work.
Whitehorse has seen its fair share of large aircraft over the years. The Shrinners booked a Canadian Pacific airlines DC 10 ffor a convention back in the early 80s and they have had several B747 Cargo aircraft land for fuel. Also Princess Ann flew to whitehorse on a Brand new B767 owned by Pacific Western Airlines.. Air Greenlands A330 was there for the Arctic winter games in 2012 but the scariest for the city was on 9/11 when US airspace was closed .2 Korean Air B744 were diverted there and one was actually using the squak code for being hijacked. In a town that size it didn't take long for the whole town to know that there was a potential for this plane to crash into the middle of the city but fortunately it was a mistake by the pilots. The 2 aircraft stayed in Whitehorse until USA airapace was reopened. If I remember right they had to drain some fuelout so that they could take off. It was much but they had to because of runway length.
It has also had many stop over by the air foces of different countries from around the world. Kc 135s, C17 globemasters , various B767 convertions from several counties and lots of US airforce fighters stopping for a break and fuel.
Love the clasic livery on the B767 in the video.
Whitehorse is a neat town. Yukon is neat. HS-748s are noisy. :-)
In the '90s I worked for a company whose European headquarters was in Brussels. The locals couldn't hear enough about Canada. As was explained by my colleagues, rich people went to places like Thailand. Poor people didn't travel. So meeting a genuine Canadian was a big thing. The only way I could be more exotic would be if I was from Mars.
genuine canadian?
I lived in Belgium for a while in the 90's too, and it makes sense as to why the Belgians would like Canadians.
Not just Belgians: French and German folks were endlessly fascinated too. People in England teased me about being a colonial who scrubbed up well. :-)
Canada has also been a pretty popular spot for Danes. Mostly with families and people who like the wilderness. Those who want beaches and tropics, go the other way around to Thailand, but Canada is still pretty popular.
@@marsgal42 Yet Brits have no concept of the size of the 'colony'. I remember on my first visit to England, my British (born in Belgium) cousin asked me how was the driving. When I said 'easy peasy' our longest drive has only been 5 hours long (a typical drive from Ottawa to Toronto), she nearly fell off her chair thinking that was an eternity!
What a gorgeous unspoiled place
Stoked to see a calgarian youtuber! Great videos man keep it up!
I fly there in summer this year. It seams really popular cause I asked lots of people at the airport.. I really like the flight. Cool video 🤙🏻
This was very interesting. Condor flies to Puerto Rico (Caribbean) seasonal once a week.
25k is the biggest in northern Canada.
I love this country.
there are more people living in the anchorage metropolitan area than in all of the Canadian territories. Alaska has more people in one city than Canada has north of 60°
3 bears per capita 😁. That is true fact. When you travel in the wilderness you will see lots of bears. First time I was so excited and kept counting. After a while I got bored counting.

Pretty crazy that the Yukon has a transatlantic flight, but bet Europeans would really love the nature and remoteness of it.
Great video with great info. Thanks!
Fascinating video Alex and wonderful retro livery on the 767. I’m thinking a trip report on the HS 748 would be rather good too 😉
In the summer of 2018, we missed our connection from Frankfurt to Vancouver. We got rebooked on the same flight the next day but asked if there was an alternative. And that alternative was a flight to Whitehorse followed by one to Vancouver. Even the clerk at the airport in Frankfurt never heard of Whitehorse. But we had a 5 hour layover which we enjoyed spending in a town where we'd normally never have been.
Fascinating. I had no idea.
This is my favourite video of yours, so interesting and such a plus condor was so open with you
I fecking love that Condor responded.

Well there is my next transatlantic flight to do in the sim. I didn't know about this route until now. So fascinating Condor is doing this!
Tnx for sharing! I'd live to visit the Yukon one day.
I remember flying São Paulo > Frankfurt with them a few years back and it was a very pleasant flight, brand new airplane, good food, friendly staff.
Thanks for this video I knew about this flight for a long time and I too was confused
Alex, another route that would be very interesting to hear about is the seasonal weekly flight in summer between Paris CDG and the French possession of St. Pierre and their new airport with about a 6300 foot runway to accommodate a Boeing 737-700 operated under the name of the local airline Air Saint Pierre but actually by equipment furnished thru a french airline so that responsibility for financial viability rests at the regional level. With terrible summer heat in Paris recently the cooler weather of this north Atlantic island could be a welcome relief but there may not be much to do there. The flight overnights for crew rest and then returns the next morning with Halifax an alternate diversion point. Weekly food provisions are probably brought from French markets to feed guests as local supplies must be limited but you should inquire.
Hi Alex! Excellent video! 👍👍
And congrats on almost 30K subs 👏👏!!
I already knew about the ANC-FRA and FAI-FRA route, but not the YXY-FRA route. Great and informative video.

this is the European way of competition craze. Still, there are only 15 flights per year non-stop to whitehorse - a frequency that US domestic destinations make per day.
