Japan's Forgotten Rally Hero? The Toyota Celica GT Four (JDM Legends Tour Pt. 13)

  • I'm from the Gran Turismo generation, so I grew up lusting for all sorts of strange Japanese exotica. Top of the list was a Castrol TOM's liveried Supra, but the truth is that car had nothing to do with the road going version. However, the rally derived Celica GT-Four also wore that iconic Castrol livery and is very affordable...

      Celicas will stay so. I have st182, want to get a GT Four. Its good, its pretty much better in every way in GT Form to MK4 Supra, both 5th and 6th gen GT Four's. Easier to get, cheaper and easier to maintain, much more fun, having true 4-wheel drive, relatively high clearence, and being insanely practical for a coupe including Supra despite Supra being a bit bigger. Get non turboed 2.0L version of either 5th(st18) or 6th(st20) gens.

      @@Kacpa2 Im willing to bet it wont. The Gen 6 GT4 is by far the most underrated car. The 3SGTE easily can hit 500hp+, AWD and it looks like this. It wont stay lowkey. They will be fully legal in the US within only a few years, and US market plunges JDM markets. Buy the GT4 as soon as possible. I sure know I will

    I'd like to take this chance to also thank Torque GT who imported this car for me at the tail end of last year from Japan. For JDM classics like these I would say they are one of the best importers in the UK - you may find the prices are slightly higher than other importers, however their aftercare, technical knowledge and quality of vehicles trumps that of others.

    Great video, I am happy to see that there are quite a few people out there who love this car as I do. I have had my UK spec ST205 for seven years now and after giving it very little attention have just spent an epic amount on trying to get it back towards mint condition. Underside has been completely stripped back, corrosion removed and undercoated. Bodywork damage has all been repaired and resprayed in the original grey (looks silver to me!) and in my only unrecoverable concession to originality I have had the BC Coilover modification carried on the Superstrut suspension (this worked out as the same price as OEM replacement but gives me the ability to alter ride height and stiffness as I would like to run it on the track in the future). The car has been corner weighted and I am just waiting for the reconditioned steering rack to come back (failed during the test drive post corner balancing) then I should have her back. Engine is original and standard so it is a little down on power compared to the JDM version but to be honest it has more than enough as it is. I have, in the past and will in the future use her as a daily driver as it is an easy car to drive in all conditions. MPG is not great, 22-23 if I am driving Miss Daisy and down to single figures when you put your foot down but I don't really mind too much. I am running 18" alloys (the new suspension setup helps with this) and it has a slightly bigger exhaust and a dump valve fitted (had it when I bought it for a measly £1600, 7 years ago) but apart from that it is completely standard, even has the original Toyota stereo fitted! As you can probably tell I really enjoy owning the car, like Jay, I too grew up wanting one but could not afford to buy or insure it back then. I have the original bill of sale, back in 1995, it cost the original owner just over £30,000, with inflation that is now just over £57000 today, you can get a lot of car for that sort of money. Anyway, great video Jay, it has definitely made me feel better about the rather large sum of money I have just spent on mine.

    In 1998 I bought a 1988 ST165, the GT4 over there and the Celica All Trac Turbo here in the US. It came in detuned form at 190 hp. with rally wheels that could have doubled as tank road-wheels. Even so it was pretty rapid. We quickly learned to use the cruise-control as a speed-limiting device; on the highway you literally couldn't feel the difference between 60 and 100mph and the speed would creep up on you any time your attention slipped. I kitted it out with lightweight Enkei 16" wheels and performance tires. Thanks to the internet I found out how to 'un-detune' it and It went from rapid to genuinely quick. But it had a problem; it was too good. Any ludicrous thing you asked it to do it just yawned and did it. You really didn't start having fun until you were at stupid speeds. I took it up a mountain pass at 125 mph and it was only mildly entertaining. A larger problem was they sold very few in the US; they were crazy-expensive when new and by the time I got mine parts were scarce and very expensive. Changing the clutch alone cost twice as much as doing a standard Celica as they had to pull the engine to do it. It was a fantastic car for covering the miles because it was so expensive that they gave it a pretty luxurious interior. It was known over here as 'The Gentleman's All-Weather Interceptor.' In the end it was just too expensive to keep it on the road and in good fettle, and I sold it on for less expensive to maintain cars.

    I owned a 95 red st205 Gt4 JDM, big wing, speedline alloys, Mongoose exhaust which complemented the revvy Yamaha block. 16v Japanese cars have a distinct sound. Sold it for £3200 in 2013, wish I kept it now. The interior is perfect the way the cockpit is designed around the driver, it set up so all the controls hardly need any eye or arm movement. If the GTi driver sat down in the Celica he'll see the difference between generic VAG cars and what makes JDM cars so distinctive. This was Toyota at their peak.

    Reliability and build quality shared only by other Toyotas of this era. Far superior to any other brand of car.
    I used mine every day for the 6 years I had it. The Celica has everything: looks, performance, racing heritage, rarity, just about enough comfort and practicality and also did I mension the fact it is an absolute tank?
    Im gutted I sold mine for £1800 only a few year ago but I just wanted a change and was becoming more aware of the cars weight and reluctance when turning into corners.

    Same as you this was always a car on the wish list, closest i came was a wrc version about 4 years ago somewhere in kent, but the guy made me nervous with how little he’d done to it ,to look after it mechanically and the body was starting to look tired too, so walked away and to this day would still like one but now will probably never happen due to current prices and what else is available for that money, and the fact my priorities have changed. Lovely cars though if only they didn’t get caught for that turbo restrictor the car would’ve seen glory 😂

    Projector headlights were optional then became standard on JDM models for 1998.
    Because the car has projectors, this allows legal use of aftermarket HIDs in the UK.
    Also, you don't have to drain the chargecooler to change the spark plugs, you can quite easily move it to one side with all hoses still attached.

    • @KeenanStyles
      @KeenanStyles Před 6 lety

      Hadena Gang | 派手なギャング one of the biggest reasons is due to the many wins the Evos and STIs have in the WRC over the very few The GT Four had. Naturally it will take a back seat in the spot light. Another reason is the Evo III debuted nearly the same time this did and that car was monstrous from the factory. Another reason is practically. With a 4 door you don’t have to sell when your family expands. Also just like James said in the beginning most people want a large selection of aftermarket parts for tuning. 3 years ago I had to make a choice between the Evo and GT-Four. I chose the Evo VII and couldn’t be more satisfied with the decision

    • @huntos83
      @huntos83 Před 6 lety +3

      So your telling me the GT4 didnt have many wins in rallying? I guess you must have missed the fact that the GT4 won the world championship drivers titles in 1990 and 1992 with Carlos Sainz, then in 1993 with Juha Kankkunen and in 1994 with Didier Auriol. It was THE dominant rally car in the early 90's winning 4 drivers championships in 5 years.
      So yeah, not much success then.......
      For reference the Evo also won 4 titles and the Impreza won 3, so it is at least in the same league of success, its just that people dont realise. The Evo and Impreza were built in the wake of the GT4's success, there is a very real possibility that they wouldnt have existed or been pushed to succed so hard without Mitsubishi and Subaru seeing the success of the 4wd Celica on the world stage.

    Completely agree they were underrated 🤷🏽‍♂️and understated . These were Toyota s answer for the Escort Cosworth, and not only did Toyota answer the question they passed the exam 💯 35 bhp more than the Cosworth in standard form . But people just didn’t know about them at the time. The Tinternet was only really for government agencies and unless you brought Car magazines and not only car magazines but Japanese specific Car mags very very few people actually knew about how capable the cars were. If you were watching Tv on a Sunday afternoon and you pestered you’re dad with a question like 🤔Dad if a lion 🦁 and a Tiger 🐅 had a fight who would win? His answer would be “Escort Cosworth “ now eat your dinner 🥘. Until an episode of Top gear when Clarkson reviewed the Celica and compared it to his own Escort Cosworth at the time 👍🏽and in the UK another working class hero was born.

    Great video! As far as buying one goes, all I can say is just do it. I've been obsessed with GT-Fours since I was a very young kid and last year I finally bought an ST205. There's no way to convey how good these are without being being behind the wheel of one, and I don't think there's anything else on the road that drives like them. As you mentioned in the video, they are still an 'under the radar' and very underrated car, which is sort of annoying as far as monetary value goes, but that does make them quite accessible, until the US market gets their hands on them and possibly drives the price up.

  • @countryside_guy

    I had one for 18 months until 2012. Mine was blue with white alloys, 95 M. Mine was a UK spec, one of 300 or so I was told. It was mint, I made the mistake of selling it for a mere £2k. It was fast af, it could do 30mpg if driven nicely or when floored just 8mpg, yes I said 8mpg 😂 It had a few tweeks under the bonnet and 4" ss exhaust straight through. Boost was somewhat higher on my one than the one you drove based on what you said about speed. My brakes worked properly too. I was a member of the GT-Four owners club which saved a little on insurance which was surprisingly cheap anyway.
    I also had an ST202 (you forgot to mention the ST202) for 6 years, not a single thing went wrong with it. The GT-Four just needed a starter motor in the time I owned it. I miss both of them so much.

    Part of the gram turismo generation here to. And my dream cars all stem from those games haha. Though my bucket list was a little bit different. 3000gt (currently own) eclipse (currently own a gen4) Toyota MR2 (owned 2 and 1 i threw about 10 grand at it lol man i love that one. its now a collector car for some guy). Ones i haven't had the pleasure of owning are a lotus evora, and a Celica GT-4. ATM stoked that i FINALLY own a 3000gt and i managed to get own that was in relatively good shape with 164k miles which is low for a 1994. ITs got issues (leaking rack and pinion, needs shocks,brakes) but again minor stuff for its age. And recently had the 120k service done (how i found the rest of the issues listed). ITs such a freaking joy to drive lol. Cheers to you getting to drive that GT-4 from murica'

    I'm also of the Gran Turismo generation that you reffer to in this video.
    I whole heartedly agree with your opinion of the future price of the GT4. The price will only go upwards, the ability for Americans to be able to import them will certainly bump the prices up, also my/our generation (I'm level 35 old) are now in a position where we can potentially afford to purchase a car that we lusted after when we were young.
    I was a little surprised that you made no reference to the Toyota MR2 (specifically the facelift version) which although not as powerful, is also one of those cars that I feel is rare now and will be going up in value.
