I remember nerds from the 80's and 90's getting upset when, after the business successes of nerds in silicon valley, "nerd culture" became a thing. They would become pretty angry, about it because it was connected to a painful history for them. They really had built up a little patch of culture out of their interest, in a fairly inhospitable world, and it felt like other people were just coming in to scoop up the reward.
I think it frustrated them quite a lot to see popular attractive people, with little attachment to their world, enjoy their passions, hobbies, and dress, without having to deal with the social isolation.
It's a bit like mocking a baseball team during all 9 innings, then when they finally win, saying how big of a fan you are, and going to their afterparty. It can be pretty frustrating for the team members.
Most of the time they weren't asking for much, just for an acknowledgement that they had done all this stuff. Somehow the actual nerds maintained their low social standing even after it had been co-opted by sorority girls that are like...so nerdy because they wear horn rim glasses, and like Mario.
I don't think all of them were perfect at expressing it, but I guess it makes sense to me, why they were upset.

Bo Derek getting credit for a hairstyle that black people have been wearing even longer than slavery has been in the USA - 1600. The style goes back before then in Africa. He's saying that the cause of conflict and misunderstanding is not so much "logical", but more emotion/trauma-based, and that, therefore, a truly logical solution should take the emotional undercurrent into account. That is, "logic" should take its "other side" into the picture---re-frame, take a broader view, engage in dialectics, sublate, synthesise---"logic" should become logic again. After all, does the logical part of you want to merely preserve itself as "logical"---or think the issue that's at hand through, as logic is supposed to do?

A headress such as a feather bonnet is meant only to be worn by a chief, a male, of a village and only them. Women could not become chiefs. Its not a sexist thing either. Thats just how we did things so dont bother. There have been cases of white people wearing feather bonnets. The reason this upsets natives and should upset everybody is because this changes the way people see our culture. Theres a significance to that headdress. Its not like just anybody can wear the popes robes or hat. And as for garbage like costumes... first of all They all STILL look like the Disney Pocahontas. A character whose face was based off a woman from the phillipines made up by a white man. She WAS real but not nearly like that. Second, i know people in my own community who still dress that way. You wouldnt put on traditional indian garments and put a dot on your forhead for halloween. Thats not right! And by the way if you call natives people indians. Thats racist to both parties. And some places still have carved wooden statues of "indian chiefs" oustide their stores in the states. That makes us seem like fucking ornaments! We're not!

ICVDox as long as they wear a cultural item with respect, what if I wore the headdress and moccasins in a pow wow? As long as it's not used as a costume in Halloween. I see a lot of non-Asian women wearing kimonos and guys dress up like Samurais and it's accepted. also it's business, if I go to Mexico and bought a poncho or sombrero will it be only for display only?

Cultural appropriation is demonizing anothers culture and punishing a group of ppl for practicing their own culture, while at the same time partaking in or profiting from the very acts of expression that you have adopted from the oppressed, who are oppressed by you OR YOUR CLAN/TRIBE/NATION ETC...

dontae hamlett when has this happened in 2017 or 16? it hasn't. and these special minorities need to stop complaining. half of the time its not even there culture, both the cultures just have the same skin color

the only minority are white ppl. but what we are talking about is "colonialism"... this is when the real minorities of the planet go around the entire planet and steal and kill everything they see, rewriting true history, claiming things that aren't theirs, while brainwashing anyone remaining. Cultural appropriation is just a prettier way of describing whats been happening for ages, the whitewashing of the planet. But I know you're intelligent enough to know this. It's just funny to me though how many walk around as if they're oblivious to blatant facts lmao!!!! As if Joe Rogan doesn't know that he lives on land which he is not indigenous to. Common sense says that he and the rest of the caucasians on the landmass of the Americas and most of the land masses on the planet, are invaders/murders/thieves/liars. Surely no one is arguing that fact.

When I see a black man being a good father, having a steady job that came from a decent education and lifestyle, a tear rolls on my cheeck. Not because of the beauty of such view, but because of the pain of him appropriating white privilege. The bastard...

Here's the thing with cultural appropriation, White People have more power in society than People of Color overall because of the history of racism. That means that a white person adopting black culture is NOT EQUAL to a black person adopting white culture. You can't divorce the concept from the context. If racism wasn't a thing cultural appropriation wouldn't be a thing, it would just be cultural exchange. But racism/white supremacy was/is a thing, so when white people adopt aspects of black culture, they risk making that cultural artifact an aspect of white culture, and robbing it of its power as an expression of black identity.
There is also the factor played by cultural hegemony. Joe Rogan mentioned the prospect of a black guy wearing a polo shirt as a counter example, saying if its OK for black people to adopt white culture, why is the reverse not ok? Well, for one, in the context of America's white supremacist nature, the most common/likely reason a black person would adopt white culture is self-defense. Dressing and acting "white" is always going to at least partially be about getting along better in society, regardless of how an individual person rationalizes it. A black guy might be wearing that polo because he needs a job too much to risk loosing it over wearing a dashiki. Generally, white people can afford to be more edgey in the way they dress and behave than black people, because they are granted more wiggle room for being white. So its cringe-y for some black people to see a white person using that leeway to experiment with black culture without simultaneously demonstrating an understanding of and solidarity with the black struggle.
