Are Altoid Survival Kits Just A Gimmick?

  • Can an Altoid survival kit save your life or are they more of a novelty -- fun to build but pretty useless in an emergency? Many Preppers carry one but are they practical? Is personalizing the tin with items that may come in handy everyday the key rather than stocking items for survival?

    Thank you for your video.
As a child I made these kits up annually and as a child would actually try to use them. I went camping, fishing, and adventuring, and would make a fire then roll out the dough I brought from home to wrap around a stick and bake over the fire.
My kit had a little bag of flour, some salt and pepper, Tea, and god knows what else my childish mind desired for survival. I believe I had a little jar of oil, some Kool-Aid, a Bar of some kind, ... I'd cook a fish on a rock so fast, ... We had forts and treehouses, ... and the teachers would chastise us for using a computer by saying, "Do you think you'll walk around with a computer in you pocket all your life?"
And here we are all walking around with a computer clutched in our hands, .... or hid in our purse or pocket. Except we call them smart phones eh?
Back in those days I'd find the stream and walk downstream for a 1/4 mile to make sure nothing was dead in the brook and then drink from it.
We knew where all the sweetwater springs were too and always drank from them if we were handy. The greatest thing about that is, the springs are still there, and I know where.
I dreamed of being a Boy Scout so I found a copy of the Boy Scout Manual and became one.
Here in this celebration of alcoholism and dysfunction, it wasn't safe for children in many social situations but we as children didn't fully understand that now did we?
I escaped into books myself. I knew at a very young age how screwed I was and spent the majority of my life escaping or living in denial of that dismal truth.
Oh well, it's all about acceptance now. The only way I can unscrew myself is to accept the reality of just how screwed I truly am.
All by design too. Most of it anyway.
My first day in school here (grade two) a little two room barn with outhouses for boys and girls, with grades One to Four in one room and grades Five to Nine in the other, I was introduced to all the dysfunction in the community eh? The other children taught me well and I of course shared my own special brand of specialness with them too!
Funny how it all works eh?
Enough of this drivel! Just a trip down memory lane, or as the screwed family says, "There's somethings better off not remembered". Talk about your perfect denial of reality.
Keep up the great work and good luck.

Books open whole new worlds and information. I was an avid reader as a child and still am today.

@@PrepperPotpourri I wish I could derive just a fraction of the enjoyment I once got from reading.
I can't help think of "fiction" now as lies that serve to entertain and distract.
Ahhh, The joys of being a curmudgeon!
      I don't even trust non-fiction these days!
But this is a dimension of the unconditional and as such, it allows for such things so I just have to learn to deal with the lies better.
      See?
There's "hope" yet! And you know how I love to hate hope. I'm just a walking contradiction I am.
You see, books gave the poor child I once was "hope" and that allowed the child to mature to become a poor adult still hoping things would get better instead of getting off my arse and making things better.
It took a long time for me to get off my arse, ... and it's a long journey where I'm starting to believe this is it. It's all about the journey.
So much like books, me and "hope" don't get along well these days.
If we only knew then what we know now. But even what we know now is going to change, that's just the way it seems to work here in the unconditional.
      Have a great one.

“There’s hope yet!” Love it. Thanks for sharing your life experiences and your determination to learn and grow even through all the bad surrounding you. You may be a curmudgeon but you are still a live one with that teeny smidgeon of hope that you ‘hate.’

Hey prepper, I think your thumbnail and your titles which were always good have been getting even better recently. This was a good example. Excellent title and thumbnail. I don't carry a survival kit but I do carry my phone a small pepper spray and a very small multi tool knife.

I have an altoids tin that I use as a basic medical kit. Bandaids, some alcohol wipes, some wet wipes to clean hands or other body parts, and a few different OTC meds (immodium, a pain killer, some antacids). It's not going to save my life but it has (more than once) made my life a lot more comfortable. I like it because the tin is a nice small size and fits easily in whatever bag I'm carrying, or even in a pocket.

More handy and useful to use a tin for either a stove or heater with folded cardboard and wax.

haha I have a self-created survival tin too. It is kept in my emergency tote (file box size). Frankly, I haven't needed to go into my altoids tin either! I have a larger tote with food and cooking supplies and my camping pack with tent and sleeping bag and such that I use when hiking. That file box tote holds everything I NEED. The rest makes life more secure and comfortable.

I suspect people will be 109% sure they are good or useless 😂 They are both.
Wiseman was aptly named. I don’t have one. My issue is I need more so I carry more. My other observation is most carry in trouser pockets. You fall and that tin will hurt! It was also easy to see ‘preppers’ at foraging meetings. They had semi military clothing and an tin bulge!
Good video. Military preparedness has very limited carry over to shtf prepping.

@prepper potpourri good video. The new iPhones have a way of sending texts via satellites to emergency services. That start last year with with the iPhone 14 series. The new iPhone series 15 can send texts to AAA via satellites. I want to upgrade my iPhone to get these features. I think they can be useful in an emergency situation.
I keep most of my emergency preparation stuff in my car. If I take the commuter train to NYC then I have away of charging my iPhone, band aid, tissues and what I need for the office. On my keys I keep a whistle. When going to the city I want to keep my stuff light and mobile. My greatest concern is being mugged or somebody trying push me onto the subway tracks.
I was in NYC during 9-11. I had to walk from downtown Manhattan to Grand Central Terminal. In my situation being bogged down with a lot of stuff is not helpful.

My daughter’s boyfriend is the outdoors person and he has been bringing her and my grandkids camping and fishing a lot more these days. I would like to make them some of these for Christmas. Can you please explain how to make them for kids? I’m very convent that my daughter has something bigger for them but I would still like them to each have one.

    • @PrepperPotpourri

I recommend finding a foraging book written for the region you live in. I live in Michigan and I like Foraging in Michigan and the Midwest: A Beginner's Guide Paperback - November 6, 2022. I have a foraging playlist czcams.com/play/PLxVoybsVxCFaJFdfJ7Ow4ILxhllQTTv30.html
