  • In this how-to episode, Adreno's Sam Cox outlines the steps to set up a reel for your speargun. Reel guns are useful for many hunting situations to mix up your diving. They have become extremely popular amongst spearfishers for the freedom they offer the diver, but it is also important to consider when it is and is not appropriate to use a reel over a float line.
    Ensure that your reel can fit your gun. You’ll need scissors, a snap clip and D-shackle, a lighter, a reel line and the reel.
    Firstly, you mount the reel to the gun using the reel rail. To attach the line to the reel, you pass the line through the reel and tie a stopper knot as shown in the video. Once you’ve done this you wind the line in applying pressure to the line and spreading it evenly across the reel to wrap up the line neatly.
    Attach your D-shackle to the end of the barrel and loop the line through the D-shackle. Then attach it to the snap clip using the knotting technique shown by Sam in the video. Melt the end of the line with a lighter to prevent it from fraying.
    Slide the shaft into the gun and attach the shaft line to the snap clip, making up for lost tension at the reel.
    Remember to always use a float when using a reel!

    *Great reel, **enjoyable.fishing** recommend very smooth and I love that you can change from left hand to right hand so easily. Gave it a 4 on durability because I haven’t had it long enough to rate it. Doing good so far.*

    The little eye inside the reel is not to hold your line, that eye is there just to stop the line spinning around, you still have to tie it around the middle of the reel. Rob Allen himself explains the proper way to rig it

    Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod czcams.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

    By just tying a stopper knot on the reel, you are asking a big fish to swim off with all your line. Rather loop it around the core of the reel and then tie a proper holding knot.

    My Dad used a Penn trolling reel with 50 mts of stainless 1.5 to 2mm fishing cable. Growing up I used the same reel with Nylon cord .After loosing several Spears and fish to cut off´s to corals and rocks I changed to steel by 18 years .50 years later I swear by it. Spectra ? We shore fished so we had to play the big or fast fish we shot. Thight down drag at all times and release when fast fish are in sight

    I think it's better to attach line to reel by wrapping around. In your approach strong fish can break this part of reel and leave

    • @mossmyd8378
      @mossmyd8378 Před 5 lety

      No that’s a terrible idea if it get to the end you loose your line and your spear you do it the way he dose it so your floatline can let the fish run or a belt reel if you have one

    Once a year maintenance on the reel was enough for it to last 15 or more years. Remove all lubricanrs and pack well with todays water proof wheel bearing grease and the reel will last for ever. My Penn 68 is still in working order and my dad´s 65 could be brought back to service. I´m
    67 so they do last

      @kadebaitrum7797 Před 5 lety +8

      Blue_water there’s no bungee because there’s a reel. And the line goes out when you spear a fish. If you broke your line on this setup your fish has either swam 50odd meters away from you and broke the stopper knot. Or your just plain stupid and fully tightened the drag so no line can be released
