  • The right speargun for you may not be the right speargun for the person next to you.
    Adreno Brisbane's Taylor Slattery covers a range of spearguns talking us through how to choose the right speargun for everyone from a full beginner to a seasoned veteran.
    Beginners: Pole spears can be useful when learning to dive at a cheap price. Something with decent weight has better momentum and power. A two piece won’t flex when you pull the hand spear, however this may occur in a three piece. A solution to this is twisting the hand spear slightly. Beginners can also look at entry level guns. Cheaper guns won’t provide you with details such as a rail to support the shaft as you shoot for accuracy. Rigging can also be a difficulty as their limited flexibility means they are less forgiving when incorrectly rigged. The materials used to produce the gun are mostly plastic. This means that when you load the gun pressure is being applied to weaker materials, and eventually you’ll have to upgrade.
    Intermediate to experienced: It all depends on what conditions you’ll be hunting in and what fish you’re going for. The general gun used for all-round performance is a 110cm gun with double 16 rubbers and 7mm shafts. These guns work nicely in reef and headland diving.
    Increasing in size to around 120cm will allow you to hunt larger fish. Aluminium guns are lighter but have some recoil, whereas timber guns are heavier but allow for better tracking in the water due to reduced recoil. Timber guns can also be maintained when they begin to wear with a simple sand back and oil.
    Roller guns are perfect for when you need a short and powerful gun. This design allows for extra power for length as the rubbers are pulled all the way around the end of the gun at the roller points. This propels the shaft until it leaves the barrel unlike traditional designs which loose tension towards the end of the barrel.
    Cuttlefish shaped guns allow for a slimmer profile for better tracking.
    Larger game fish in blue water conditions can be targeted with the larger guns around 140cm. These guns are great with wings for improved buoyancy in the water and a weight which can absorb the recoil for improved accuracy.
    A closed muzzle will give you better accuracy however any bending in the shaft will prevent you from using them again. It’s always important to keep spare shafts around when using a closed muzzle. Alternatively, open muzzles may be less stable however there is nothing getting in the way of your sight when aiming.
    Entirely stainless steel guns are a good investment if you’re looking for longevity. Resistance to wear and tear means they will last as long as you can.
    If you have any questions just contact the Adreno team or come in store and we can guarantee that we have a gun suited to you.

    Good tips but only disagree with 80grit sandpaper on timber spearguns. I’d use 240, 320 then 0000 steel wool with teak oil or wax to finish it off 👍

    About 40 years ago I wanted a speargun but couldn't afford one. Without exception all the guns in the local dive shops had heavy 10 - 12mm spears which were fitted with reels with fancy runners for the line and variations on drop heads or screw on heads with spring loaded barbs. One of our neighbours was one of the local pioneer spear fisherman in the 60's and 70's. He gave me a design for a homemade gun using a 6mm spear with the barb attached to the spear and a hole through the back of the spear in front of the wishbone notch for the heavy monofilament line. The float line was attached to the back of the gun and used to fight the fish instead of a reel and the fish were strung on the float to keep the sharks off your arse. That design was printed in his book "Spearfishing in Natal" by Len Jones. I still have that paper cover book with Len's own artwork. Thereafter guns rigged with spears like that were called Natal Guns. Now, years later I see that method of rigging the guns in spearfishing videos from all over the world.

    Back in the 70s I had a "Bazooka " spear gun and also a 12 Gauge power head also a 44 Magnum power head and a shark dart. (Illegal nowadays) I also made from timber my own guns. Use to buy all my accessories from a shop called Mike Symonds in George Street (no longer there). I have to admit making your own gun to your personal requirements and spearing fish or sharks is so rewarding. I wouldn't kill a shark thesedays though. I started spearfishing back in the 70s thanks to Ben and Valerie Crop (underwater photographers)

      I can confirm that 75 is a good way to go. This does depend on your height though. I'm 178cm and my 75 is perfect for flatfish and smaller fish close to shore. Especially good for getting fish in small caves and under rocks.
      Additionally I'd recommend 1 rubber for flatfish, that way you won't damage your spear as quickly.

I think it’s length was 100 or 110 big enough for me as I’m only 5,5 ft tall a bit big , I could go shorter gun better.

    Interest subject regarding spear gun. I'm also a crazy for it. During my young time, there is impossible you can get a spear gun. That is 1958 at Hong Kong. At that time we only can cut inside tire bladder as rubber power. Spear is made of bamboo a piece of steel as spear tip. But today, you're lucky to have so many choice of spear gun. But choose the one base on your diving experience is more important. By experience, if you a beginner, try to choose simple basic rubber spear gun in shorter or medium size which is easier to handle.

    I'm young and new to diving and whatnot but am keen as to get an easy-to-use, affordable yet effective gun to use in reef-like shore areas. I do have a pole spear and have tried using it a few times, but I've struggled to get close enough to where I can actually take a shot without spooking the fish and having it swim away or retreat under a low rock. I was curious about what the name of the black speargun just to our left of the blue gun was called? (The one with the twin 14s) Thankyou in advance to anyone that could maybe give me a few tips on finding a gun for myself or even recommending one. :)

      You could try and find a cheap rob Allen scorpia. In regards to your hunting style. Learn to dolphin dive smoothly, take your snorkel out of your mouth before you dive to stop air bubbles, don’t look at the fish or square your shoulders until you need to shoot because they can see that you are hunting them,be calm and less sporadic with your movements, try to use cover and wait for the curious fish to come to you instead of chasing them out in the open and practice co2 tables to stay down under for longer.

    • @romanboi10
      @romanboi10 Před 4 lety

      Get a 75cm-110cm Cressi speargun. They are precise and easy to use. Get an open muzzle which means you wrap the line around the shaft to hold the shaft down on the end. This prepares you for bigger wood guns with open muzzle. But Cressi is great for beginners and experienced users.

    • @uoj4840
      @uoj4840 Před 4 lety

      romanboi10 thankyou. Since this comment, I’ve been using a salvimar vuoto predathor pneumatic speargun for a while now, about 90cm in full length from handle to muzzle, and have gotten many feeds out of it. The one problem I am having is I’m finding it hard to line up the shot I’m looking for due to the big round cylinder-like structure of the gun, impairing view of the fish, therefore making it difficult to line up a nice shot. I still manage, however it just doesn’t feel satisfying and feels a lot more flukey due to not actually being able to choose where to place my shot. Hence, why I’ve been looking at rubber guns lately. I have used one of my mates big wooden closed muzzle spearguns, and found it so much easier to see the fish when aiming for it. I think the factor of being able to see the shaft itself is a big positive for being able to line up that shot. A gun I’ve been looking at is the Beuchat Marlin Grommet, found on spearfishing.com.au going for about $300. I must say I haven’t looked very far at all beyond that gun, as I’ve always had a pretty keen eye on it. Is there anything regarding something I’ve said in this comment you could help me with or give your two cents on per say? Thanks a lot for your reply :)

      @@uoj4840 Hey. Thats cool. The Beuchat spearguns are pretty good. I have a Rob Allen myself and cant go wrong but I started on Cressi brand. A lot of railguns are similar, just get a good length that you can load and get in the water. Maybe your mates wooden gun was enclosed track for the shaft. Haven't seen too many closed muzzle (bridge over shaft at end) wood guns. Ya it's nice to aim by looking down the shaft instead of pneumatic guns. Plus in a zombie apocalypse survival situation, with rubber guns, you don't have to reload air in those pneumatic guns periodically. All the pros use bands. Have fun, stay safe.

    most " Hawaiian" slings don't use steel for their interconnections. my point is, corrosion is specific to a type of metal, rust is a specific type of corrosion. where as all corrosion can be denoted to all metals exposed to oxygen reactive within oxygen based atmosphere.
    point is: rinse your stuff after each use. but treat it in the down time differently. dry lube best or aquas silicone (avoid petrol based). petrol will stink and scare fish.

    I wanna go out and kill a 6 meter shark, Whats thr best speargun for me do you think. I already got my snorkel, silicone Mask and super long flippers i also have a divers knife that i stap to my leg. I just can't wait to kill my first big shark.

    What speargun would you recommend as a self defence against big sharks while kayaking? Something compact so it can be stored away while paddling, quick and easy to load with enough power to make it count
