  • Santa Maria delle Grazie is the most beautiful Renaissance church in Milan. Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan ordered its construction in 1463, the architect Guiniforte Solari worked on the basilica and the adjacent Dominican monastery from 1466 to 1490, but the monastery was completed earlier, in 1469.
In the great hall is Leonardo da Vinci's famous fresco, The Last Supper (Cenacolo in Italian), which has been part of the world heritage together with the basilica since 1980.
On the night of August 15, 1943, the monastery was also bombed due to Anglo-American air strikes. The refectory (former dining place for monks) was destroyed, but some walls - including the one on which the Last Supper (Il Cenacolo) was painted - remained intact. The buildings of the former monastery, the courtyards and passages are located to the left of the church. The main entrance opens from the square, from here you can also access the great hall, where The Last Supper is shown, through a small vestibule.
