- On this episode of the BarDown podcast, DZ, Corwin, Julia and Thomas dive into the mailbag to answer a bunch of fan questions. They also discuss Patrick Kane's awesome OT moment in Chicago, Matt Rempe's fighting streak, and who they'd want to see the Rangers play in round one.

I misspoke when we discussed the Red Wings, as they are firmly in a comfortable playoff position, so that is my error.
I do think the points we brought up about them not being strong 5v5 are fair points, but I do get that as a whole my comment misrepresented their recent strong play. So for that, I apologize.
And for what it's worth, as I said in the show, I do hope the Red Wings make it to the playoffs. Much like I've stated with Buffalo in the past, it's a market with a loyal fan base that deserves playoff hockey.
I mean it's fine. People are for whatever reason refusing to actually watch their games and looking at the numbers. Looking at advanced analytics is nice and all, but it is not a full replacement for the insight you get from actually watching them play.
I'm blaming you for this 5 game losing streak now

The Red Wings discussion was hilarious. They tried insinuating that they would be lucky to be in the playoffs, meanwhile they are * checks notes * two points back of the Leafs and comfortably in a wild card spot

They are too busy being delusional about their leafs to pay attention to anyone else lmao. I don’t particularly like the red wings but they have been more consistent than the leafs this season.

It’s very frustrating as a fan to watch these guys rip on my Red Wings, and when they justify their opinion they just point at the advanced analytics. I mean yes the red wings don’t have great 5v5 stats and they’re usually getting outshot, but the Red Wings are 16-4-2 since the new year. It’s pretty clear these guys don’t watch the games and are just bias.
Have you guys… I don’t know, watched the Red Wings? They’re 8 points clear of a playoff spot, 2 points behind Toronto for 3rd in the Atlantic, and are playing very well. They have a +27 goal differential. Most people I’ve seen talking about them agree they are in a great position to make the playoffs pretty comfortably. I say all this as someone who isn’t exactly a fan of Detroit.

I've seen a few people say that it's weird that Kane shouted his nickname in his celebration, but he got that nickname from doing that exact thing lol. When he scored a crazy goal in the playoffs vs Minnesota, he celebrated basically the same way, by yelling "Showtime", and it's a phrase he's said throughout his career. People just locked onto it and started calling him that lol.

Wings are on their biggest heater of their season, they're top 6 in scoring, top 10 in both aspects of special teams, in a wild card spot by 8 points, and these guys still call them "lucky" and "sort of in, sort of out." Do they actually follow the season?
Nobody follows your own team more than you do, it's hard for to be on top of every team.

@cpzd83 I agree to an extent, but the minimum amount of work for this type of discussion would be to just look at the point totals for each team and pull up the team stats rankings on ESPN. It's not that hard, but they clearly did 0 research and are just going on their preconceived notions

At this point, it's pretty much a given that 5 teams are in fron the Atlantic division and the question is who gets the 3rd Metro spot. If you get paid to talk about hockey, you should at least try and do a little better research.

Had to point this out after hearing. Kane got his nickname from saying showtime after scoring LOL. So kinda makes sense
Corwin's number memorization skills are super cool, it would absolutely be extremely useful. Plus it was neat hearing about his career pivot and the work he did to get this job. I'm currently in the midst of one myself and it's cool to see it work out for someone. Also I got my previous job in a similar way, after applying and following up for a few months I had given up, then out of the blue got an email asking if I was still looking.

careful, wings have been the 2nd best team in 2024. We certainly has the most depth in terms of scoring. And our goalie looks like he can steal a game or two.

Rempe is the first NHL player to get a game winning goal and 27 PIM in his first 4 games, he has impact and fills his role nicely on offense. That line with Edstrom (another 6’7 player) tires the opponent out so much and they actually find space. Better than a lot of 4th lines, and they just started playing together.
detroit has the second best point percentage in the nhl since jan 1st only behind florida, only reason they are in a wildcard is because of a injury riddled december, they are gonna pass yalls fav in the next 20 games with ease

As a Flyers fan in Philly, I'm kinda glad TK wasn't named. The whole mystery of Laughts being traded took him off my table for the C so I was all in for Coots. He's level headed and a great team leader. TK would either be an awesome C for how ferocious and crazy he is or a terrible C for literally the same exact reasons lol. But yeah, I think Coots deserves it.

Yeah dude, I honestly never watched this channel until this week and have been BINGING so much of it lately I am always just startled by the lack of mention we ever get lol. Also, how do you feel about the TK not getting the C? I'm kinda glad they went with a more level-headed Coots.
@@slippi2476 i like the move Konecny is the better player don't get me wrong but having the C isn't just being the best player but the best leader and i personally believe Coots fits the title
@@boisvert45 exactly. TK is too unstable (in all the best ways lol) but Coots is the more level headed leader type in my eyes though that's just based on watching games and interviews and shit. Who knows.
Corwin's origin story is amazing! Genuinely my favorite part of this podcast and up there for all bardown stories. Something super relatable about it. Happy it worked out for him.

It was interesting to hear about what you all wanted to be when you grew up.
When I was little I said I wanted to be an elevator operator and have 13 children. I'm glad that neither worked out. I'm not sure an elevator operator salary could financially support a Magic School Bus number of children.

I think it is important to note that the wings offensive system is something that isn’t accounted for in 5v5 xGF stats. Those stats do not account for puck movement and goalie positioning. Wings like to cycle and swing it east-west across the slot to handcuff the goalie. xGF sees that as just a shot from the location it was taken and doesn’t account for how dangerous it actually is. In other words wings are going for a quality over quantity approach that analytics don’t have a way to account for right now. They are much better than those stats imply.
So what canucks fans have been saying all season about their advanced stats.

A ton of my friends in math team in high school also ran cross country, and if you live in a place where hockey is a thing, it makes sense for anyone to like it
The thing about Rempe is that he could really be an asset on the offensive side of things. Kid can skate and he’s almost 7 foot tall, if NYR mgmt can tell him not to fight at the drop of a hat and park him in front of the net he can absolutely pot some goals. Is he going to be anything more than a 4th liner? Probably not but he almost certainly has a place in the league
Video idea: create the best 23-man team possible with the goal of winning as many cups as possible over the next 5-7 years. Gotta be under the cap, so taking into account age, term, next contract (especially for ELC’s - :ahem: bedard…), “cup pedigree”, size, etc.

Lafrenierre is the guy they need. No one develops the same, but Lafrenierre is actually doing his job, shooting so much more and making plays. People need to go back to watching Rangers games instead of thinking of Laf’s past performance. The only year that matters is right now and he’s fulfilling his role. Don’t underestimate how well he plays every night.

the Rempe thing and all the attention he’s getting shows why fighting is so key for hockey. He’s bringing in more views than any dangle mcdavid or matthews does. Especially now with media and sports getting so soft the fights are getting more praise.

Leafs fans cocky about the playoffs is maybe the funniest part of every hockey season. This is why we all love when your hearts are inevitably broken in the first round every year. “Maybe the wings win 1-2 games” while smirking. lol. People who support teams outside Toronto realize you don’t need to go through the process of a decade of getting upset in the first round to limp through to the second round and then get demolished 😂

15:48 people don’t fight Ryan reeves because they’re not “tough enough” they don’t fight him because it’s a waste of time and he’s better for the opposing team to be on the since he’s so awful than to waste a player in the box
These guys are cold on the wings. But wings fans need to understand that the Red Wings haven't been a legit playoff team for years now, so to convince people who don't follow the team closely that this year is different just takes time. It took most people more than half the year to start believing that the Canucks were a good team.
On the other hand the Wings are like 16-6 in the New Year and that's a solid sample size (the terrible December was due to Larkin and Lyon being injured), every other wildcard team is not even close to that type of consistency in winning, so to expect one of the Pens or Devils to suddenly figure it out and outplay them that much down the stretch and knock them out is pretty unlikely. I just can't see it happening and it might be more about a lack of confidence in NJ and Pitt.
As opposed to the leafs who have won one playoff series in over 20 years?
It also would need to be 2 metropolitan teams to figue it out cause the first would take the third slot in the division and the second can then get a wildcard slot which also implies we lose are lead over tampa which I also feel is unlikely being 2 games ahead and 3 behind
