- Is it possible to learn Russian without grammar? What can we reach if we just ignore the grammar? What about textbooks?
Today we're going to meet an American guy, who studies Russian in a bit different way. He have never had a grammar book and he didn't study any rules of grammar. How does he learn Russian?
Let's look at the interview and we will find out if one really must learn grammar to acquire a language successfully.

I know people who know fine Russian grammar but they’re always afraid to make mistakes, Including me.
And also people, who don’t know grammar at all, but they’re not afraid to make mistakes. Surprisingly, they communicate better than the people who learn grammar.
This is exactly my approach, it really works. I decided not to bother with details that cost a lot of time and effort. I 'll do that in next stage

This video has really encouraged me to practice speaking/listening. In my opinion, Israel was able to make this kind of progress in 10 months because he's open-minded and isn't afraid of making mistakes when speaking to others. He also seems very likeable and personable, which probably helps when interacting with other native speakers.

This is my new favourite channel by far for listening exercises.
I'm learning Russian the same way, since late November. I've never written anything down, I've never used a textbook, I've not done any grammar exercises and I haven't even read much either (yet). Pretty much all I've done so far is use the same youtube videos that he mentioned and it still amazes me how much I've learnt from this method. But I also focus on grammar - I quite often watch videos about explicit grammar points, explaining a certain case and when/how to use it. Then my 'homework' is to watch more videos and try to find examples of that grammar in context. I think it's an effective system - but I also want to try reading now so I recently bought two A2 level graded readers from amazon and I'll be reading those soon.

This video as well as Bald and Bankrupt emphasize that to learn quickly, don't bother with cases, focus on nouns and adjectives, and spend time on what you enjoy. That is why I am re-watching all of Max's videos. His are the most fun by far!
All the CZcams channels he's talking about are actually really great and I've been using them ever since I've started learning Russian.

I completely agree and this is great motivation to get over the beginner plateau. Most Russians and other Eastern Europeans I've met speak English with grammar mistakes and a heavy accent but it doesn't matter at all. I understand them and I definitely don't think negatively about their skills. If a Russian came up to me and said "excuse me, where bus? I need go London", I'd completely understand. So why should I demotivate myself by studying grammar books? My goal is to speak conversational cave man Russian until I'm at a decent level of speaking and listening and only when I'm at that point will I pay more attention to cases and exceptions.

I’ve been interested in learning Russian for over a year now and I can’t even decipher the names of the other podcasts and channels mentioned in the sentences without going back and listening so carefully. The only one I wasn’t subscribed to is Amazing Russian about to have a lesson. He’s pretty amazing. His vocabulary knowledge at 10 months is amazing.
your english is good, max! your videos inspire me with your language courses! i agree, russian is a difficult language! But. i really like the language!
I feel envy, Israel is my hero, he is Spanish I guess but he learnt Russian very quick, I can understand what you say but I am not able to speak so fluently. Well, I also love watching your videos and I notice my understanding has improved a lot. So thanks for your great job and congratulations to Israel. "Hasta pronto" from Spain ;)
Apart from the obvious fact that he is able to communicate with a native Russien who is speaking at regular speed, the other VERY COOL fact is that he actually learned the intonation of the words as well! Sure, granted he listened and repeated a lot it should come naturally, but a lot of ppl don't bother with the accent/intonation of Russian words (which, let's face it, IS hard if you think about it). Absolutely amazing, his just shows what one can do with diligence and immersion (ofc the fact that he lives in Russia helps a ton, since he is surrounded by the language 0-24 and has ample time and opportunities to practice, but still).
Congratulations to Israel for great progress in Russian. It's interesting to think about some "secrets" of his success. We know that Olga Jarrel (Amazing Russian) teaches grammar. We can't say Israel has had no grammar, but we can clearly say that his approach has deemphasized grammar. What I see in his approach is immersion and some early speaking. He teaches English to Russian speakers right? I would guess that he is in a "place" where he can try to speak Russian without fear of making mistakes and also encourage his English learners to do the same in English. I would guess that he has made some friends with Russian speakers and can continue the process of learning to speak in the "no fear of mistakes" zone. Yes that is a cool park. I would like to learn more about it!

It's okay! Everyone has it's own way! It's normal. If you want to improve your speaking you have to ... speak a lot and repeat phrases after listening them. Keep your interest and go on! It'll come for sure!:)
Me too. I need to buckle down & get with the program. It would be so much easier if I had Russian speakers around. Sometimes I feel like I am learning Russian in a bubble. Thank goodness for YT!
The trick is to not study. Read and listen and don't worry about forgetting! You'll get there!!

wow, this is an amazing video. To me it just reinforces the idea that you just need to keep speaking speaking and speaking without fear of mistakes. It definitely helps that he's in an immersive environment though! It's hard to sustain immersion when you're not in Russia (or somewhere where Russian is commonly spoken)

But you can try and find a language partner/ a Russian friend to speak Russian daily, it can help the immersion ) Use any chance to communicate Mark!!! Try to use language exchange apps like hellotalk, I recommend it to my students, you may comment posts of Russians there and that's sure that you'll be corrected by them ;)
Thank you for the recommendation! I don't think I've ever posted anything in Russian on my HelloTalk account without at least one correction! (Well, I did post a single sentence once without any corrections! I felt really positive about that.) Something I have been doing on HelloTalk (but not recently) is reading my homework assignments aloud, and I need to get back to doing it...

Can you really love a language and say that it's beautiful while at the same time ignoring it's grammar?
Я тоже изучаю русский, как этот молодой человек. Я слушаю подкасты и читаю книги, которыми я интересуюсь. Это не "без грамматики", но это не классический метод. Мы изучаем грамматику естественно, путем повторения. Мне кажется лучшим путем.

Макс, я изучаю язык через повторение. Я замечаю грамматические особенности, слушая много примеров, и медленно начинаю их использовать. Именно по этой причине ваши видео очень полезны. Вы повторяете много слов и структур, но история интересная, так что это не скучно. Мы можем узнать о языке, сначала изучив правила и тренируя упражнения, но я думаю, что мы приобретаем языки только через рассказы.

Israel,ты говоришь на тех же самых языках как меня :) Я считаю что ты абсолютно прав обо согласных. В начале, очень трудно привыкнуть об этом...It's kind of funny, considering Russian has more vowels.

I had some problems with И and Ы. We don't have an equivalent for Ы...Sounds like trying to say И after being punched in the stomach haha.

I will soon start with A2 in russian. His talking skills are impressiv. Отлично! 😁
But I personaly believe that without a solid knowledge of grammar its impossible to master any language. You can use what you know for the conversations .. but you are not able to "integrate" new words into your daily used speech patterns. For example you learn a new verb and you dont know that accusativ must be used with it (you even dont know what is accusativ), or you dont know if its a perfective or imperfective verb.. and so on. You will get into troubles sooner or later..
To talk is .. yeah ofc very important 😊 and the best way to get " into in the language"! And i 100 pro agree with that: Listening to podcasts, russian Radio or looking russian TV etc. or better have a russian native speaker is a must!
But one of the real challange for me (especially as to russian) is to understand the russian casus system and to be able to master HCB vs CB and ofc use these concepts when i talk, write or read. I have to say that it would also personaly disturb me a lot if f.e. i can talk in russian but i could not properly read or write .. just a bit strange ..
This should not blame anyone! Its just my personal opinion,😉😊 I studied Maths and Computer Science: So study a language without grammar is like doing maths without proofs 😉 ...

I just told my online teacher, that I would like to start speaking in Russian without caring about the endings of the words.
Like I learned Spanish just going to the country and starting to talk without any grammar book. I made many mistakes, but after one year I spoke and understood the language.
Now, I spent one year watching videos in Russian (for example your's, Max) and I already understand a lot.
He wrote this to me:

Здравствуй, Michaela! Yes, Russian has a huge number of different endings and they all convey different meanings.
However, if your goal is to build confidence to actually speak the language I would claim that it's possible to do so without studying grammar.
Anyways you have to have some sort of a strategy.
Of course lots of comprehensible input is vital, but you also want to practice some common language structures and patterns in speech.
You have to develop your own "feeling" of word endings, which will work better and better year after year.
I'd recommend you to go with the Shadowing technique, which I have a video about and repeat (copy) everything you are listening to or watching.
TPRS is the best help imho, but there's still not enough content for beginners which people can use structurally, step by step (this is actually my plan for the fall).
Nevertheless, Israel did it and I have no doubts that you can do it as well! Good luck!

I saw another guy on another channel with exactly the same advice to learn russian, learn a lot of vocabulary and forget grammar as it will flow inside you by repetition. It's also another reason why French pupils learning German are often better at German grammar than the average German but are unable to spit out a simple sentence because of grammatical paralysis: they learn it at school like Latin, a dead language!

Не очень согласна с тем, что в этих языках (Англ., Русск.) неважно начинать изучая граматические правила. Лично не считаю преимущество разговарывать, если получается не грамотно, через множество ошибок!

This guy proves that grown ups can learn languages like children do.. grammar was invented to understand a language like mathematics and to shortcut the process of learning.. but actually studying a lot of grammar slows down most learners

He must have had someone to practise with who corrected him. Listening and watching is great, but you need feedback to get on the right track when speaking. He omitted that factor, and Max didn't think of it

He is doing well for not having studied formally. But he could stand to polish his grammer and case usage by at least getting a better understanding of the case nuances, especially accusative and dative cases. But his comprehension of spoken Russian might be even better than my own!

Во Вьетнаме учат русскому только в спецшколах. Всего где-то 12. Но русскоговорящих у нас много. На ютубе есть вьетнамец, который давно жил в Америке, и он преподает английский таким образом, как ты делаешь. Каждый раз он приезжает во Вьетнаме, его учащиеся собираются и занимаются с ним. Надеюсь, когда - нибудь подобная вещь сбудется с тобой. Твои уроки очень полезны и понятны, мне совсем подходят. А весь день делать упражнения по грамматике не очень интересно. А такому живому русскому языку, с его слангами, никто нас не учит.

Nine months sounds great but nine months submerged in Russian society is not at all the same as for instance 9 months Duolingo in Canada 🇨🇦!! Soooo i would say more equivalent to two years of 1 hour Duolingo a day... (and that is optimistic)

А сколько раз ты слушаешь, например, одно аудио или подкаст?
I think that the point here is how and what you are listening to.
I'd recommend trying this sequence:
1. Find something that suits your level and you can understand at least 50% without a text. I personally prefer audios because it's easier to listen to them anywhere while walking or doing dishes.
2. Listen to every audio constantly and repetitively e.g. 2 times per day for a few days. Sometimes look at the text but not when you're listening, because our brain always looks for an easiest way to get information. Therefore train it by listening without watching the text at the same time.
Train is a right word here, because listening is a skill, we can't learn it we can only train it.
But don't stick to some difficult stuff otherwise it may be too discouraging and you can loose your motivation.
If you keep going although it seems like you learn nothing, you have no chance to fail. Just do it!:)

Здравствуй, Афтаб! Спасибо:) у меня два диплома - IT менеджер и учитель русского. Я думаю, что самое главное делать то, что тебе нравится, и то, что для тебя работает! Если тебе нравится изучать грамматику - хорошо, если нет - тоже хорошо! Единственное, я считаю, что слишком много грамматики и анализа мешает говорению и свободному общению. Удачи тебе!:)

Грамматику не надо недооценивать. Вопрос лишь в том, чего ты хочешь. И если ты хочешь говорить и понимать как можно быстрее, то грамматика нужна в очень ограниченном количестве. Все дело в том, на чём ты фокусируешься.
Cогласна насчёт подкаста Татьяны Климовой - очень полезно для тех, кто, например, за рулём, можно слушать и ехать и повторять прямо вслух самому себе )))

I think Israel retains the quality children have to learn a language without using grammar, 99% of people lose that prerogative by the age of 10. he is what they call "a natural". I will be able to speak like him perhaps in 3 years' time but I don't get depressed about it. I will just keep studying Russian simply because I like doing it.
Да, Феруччио! У каждого свой путь! И я считаю, что наслаждение намного важнее, чем скоростью овладевания языком. Если тебе в радость, то ты делаешь и будешь делать, а находится в депрессивном состоянии, потому что кто-то лучше - не самый лучший путь)
99% of people don´t try
1% of people do try and then people just call them talented or say "he´s/she´s good but not perfect which proves that you need to study grammar" while ignoring that there are tons of people that make tons of mistakes despite studying grammar.
Learning grammar on my first months in Russian has been a big mistake for me. I watched every single video about grammar, dative, genitive,reflexive, perfective..And I wonder why I don't still get it. I still don't understand the grammar even after several months.
Then I shift from understanding the grammar to knowing words and phrases. Like TPRS and listening skills. That's when I started to have a little improvement.
Yep, it's not a good idea to overload yourself with grammar when you just started. It can cause a lot of discouragement. It needs. I think it should be learned in a very limited way with a lot of language exposure.

I have to say, I find this utterly depressing and disheartening. I have been learning for a couple of years, know a lot of grammar, can write and read quite well and even speak a bit, but struggle with comprehension. It does my self-confidence no good at all to be told what other more talented people can do. :-(
Привет, Зельда! There is no talented and no-talented people in my opinion. We all have learned our mother tongue without any problems. I'm sure that we all can learn any language but we do it differently. Because we're not kids anymore we've got our own interests, possibilities and quite strong beliefs. Thus we have to develop our own way to learn a language. Don't be depressed and upset. Your listening comprehension might be less developed, but you have another strong advantages I'm sure of that! You may just find what exactly you want to improve and work on it. But! The process must bring fun and interest! Find what you like, what you're passionate about and do it for pleasure! Everyone learns differently. Every single person. I’m someone who NEEDS to write things down and study grammar. My fiancé (who is Russian but came to America and lost his language) learns without studying much, just repetition. You can’t judge your progress based on someone else’s. Each individual learns differently.
You didn't focus on input. Too much grammar most likely.
Listen listen and listen a lot of stuff. That will help tons

I've taught English for many years to foreign students and of course, one can speak at a very low level and very badly and still make themselves understood if they have the desire. And, this is great if you want. But this isn't everyone's goal.

This guy has no job right, he literally had all the time in the world. There is so much you don't say here, and I don't have to know Russian to know that. Weeee way to go there lil fella, apparently rich world traveling empowered from a young age with tons of social support - as a guy who isn't "White" in "Racist" America - AMAZING what we can do when there is literally nothing stopping us.
