As a former Marine, I can tell you Sobel was overcompensating for his geeky, frail appearance. There is no need for a commanding officer to be outwardly tough and demanding with his junior troops. That can be delegated to the more junior leaders. Also, it appears that his senior NCOs did a poor job of keeping him in equilibrium or training him to be a more effective leader. Any officer who is branded a tyrant is a bad one indeed.

I've no idea where you got your information from because it is not what is shown in ' Band of Brothers ' which was very petty tyrant in training , liar about charges regarding Dick Winters and completely incompetent in the field and therefore a crap and untrustworthy leader , he was a legend only in his own mind , that's it
Legend in his own mind? He was training them for war! His training is what literally made Easy company.
Band of Brothers is a narrative of the reality, you don't get to see everyone's story. He got the information from REAL LIFE not just a TV show based on a book compiled from interviews. The man never struck his children, was a good husband, and an important member of his community. Yes it dissolved for him, but to blatantly disregard the man solely for his performance as a CO is completely disingenuous to the human being he was.
Sobel's son Michael attended Easy company reunions and was warmly received as easy company(mainly Bill Guarnere) had tried to reach out to him but Sobel declined (probably because he expected to be reviled as you have done). Michael Sobel received countless hugs and words appreciation from the remaining Easy company members and their families. They told Michael that it was because of his father that they survived the war. They may have hated him in the time but appreciated his contibution to Easy company. Michael Sobel broke down wishing his father could have heard and experienced this ACCEPTANCE and FORGIVENESS of him. Easy company forgave him and thanked him, that should be how everyone see's Sobel. Not as some scorned villain. Life isn't a film.
@@Gravelgratious what you say could be true but that is AFTER the war was over , during the war , which is crucial, they were thankful he wasn’t involved with them , he didn’t inspire confidence from the men , like Dyke whereas Ronald Spiers did give them everything that Sobel and Dyke didn’t .
He also didn’t appear to respect the actions of the men that had actually fought and remained petty until the end of the war , maybe he regretted the way he acted in the build up and that’s why he declined the reunion invitation.
If the men forgave him, that says more about them than Sobel.
It seems fairly certain that had he actually gone into Normandy , not many, if any , would have survived.

This is a tedious video to watch. The script is needlessly repetitive and the AI narration too monotone.
As a young British Police Officer I leaned a lot about leadership from a Sergeant who was a total bully. He did everything wrong, he had favourites who could do no wrong at least in his eyes and if you wanted to be a favourite you had to kiss his ****. He would reject work done as "crap, do it again", but never tell you what was wrong and help you to develop. If we went for an after work beer he would expect to have it bought for him. Like Sobel he was a negative example and in a way even though I hated him I sort of thank him as I leaned a lot of how not to lead people which was useful later in service. But like Sobel's case his senior Officers did nothing to develop him despite being all too aware of what he was like, I blame them as well as they turned a blind eye until forced into action, that's poor leadership.
You hit the nail on the head Sink was busy running a war but the contrast of Sobel and Winters became the war.

When you're unfair the men will eventually lose their respect for such a leader.

Sobel was a trainer of soldiers par excellence! His lack of mastery of field knowledge and his petty ego led to Easy Co. being taken from him. He was sent to do what he did best, train soldiers.
He was a major fuck up that was allowed to climb the ranks. He was a rank that the military needed at the time and his mental capacity and state were disregarded. He filled a slot.
So, was Sobel just an incompetent boob or did he pull a "Herb Brooks," pulling the troops together by letting them hate him?
