- The Real Major Richard "Dick" Winters of Band of Brothers - Documentary.
Richard "Dick" Winters (1918-2011) was a highly decorated United States Army officer who served during World War II. He is best known for his leadership of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, which was the subject of the popular HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers." Winters was born in Pennsylvania and attended Franklin and Marshall College before enlisting in the Army in 1941. He rose quickly through the ranks, earning numerous commendations for his bravery and leadership in combat. After the war, Winters returned to civilian life and worked as a businessman, eventually retiring to Hershey, Pennsylvania. He remained a revered figure among veterans and military historians, and his leadership and heroism continue to inspire generations of soldiers.

My Wife, a Certified Nurses Aid for almost 50 years, was assigned as the full-time day shift caregiver to Dick Winters at the nursing home where he passed away. This lasted for 4 months. She loved him and his Wife and felt that was the absolute highlight of her long career. Notably, she was not permitted to talk about this assignment, not even to me, her Husband, until after he died. Mrs. Winters personally hand carried the invitation to Dick's ceremonial service at a packed Hershey Theatre. We sat next to the family booth on the second level. We were able to meet Tom Hanks after the program.
Congratulations. Bless your wife as a CNA.😊
That's beautiful
If you are ever in question of what makes a good man, this is it. You work hard, not just for yourself but for all of those around you. You practice humility and do these things not for credit, but because you know it is right. Maj. Richard Dick Winters is IMO the absolute perfect example of what it means to be a truly good man.
Dick Winters was a fine Officer and he's portrayed so well in Band of Brothers, a fine leader and a fine brave soldier. RIP to a great leader.🇺🇸🙏
Heroes never die ❤
Except the show tries to santise Winters's image when his real personality is more akin to Speirs.
@@jerbs5346 How do you know?
@@catherinelw9365 From his interviews.
@@jerbs5346Watching the show again, you see that Spiers cared for his men. His assault on the gun was bad , but everyone makes mistakes. Most of Winters' men thought well of him.
This guy has got to be my favorite person ever, not just his character on Band of Brothers and what he did in the Army but also just him as a man. I am fascinated with him and want to be more like him.
I first watched the Band of Brothers movie in 2003, and until now I still enjoy watching it several times..
I find it hard to put into words how much I respect those guys
Watched Band of Brothers several times. Best war series ever put together. RIP Major Winters, you should have the Medal of Honour. I am from Scotland. At the end of the series Major Winters recalls his grandson asking "Granpa were you a hero during the war" with typical humility he replied "No, but I serve with a few. God Bless You.
He said "No, but i served in the company of heroes" nice try though way to disrespect the Major
It wasn’t Major Winters own grandson he was talking about. It was a letter he had received from Mike Ranney.
@@MrSmokincodz Give it a rest, don't think he meant any disrespect.
@@MrSmokincodz What are you 12?

Wonderful tribute to an incredible soldier, leader, and American. I'm in complete awe of what he accomplished during WWII while only in his twenties. 🇺🇸
This man was a badass soldier and officer . God bless you sir.
He is still inspiring me in my daily life. If something is not easy, I remember Dick and I know to do my best and never asking for credits. Its a hard exercise but by accomplishing it, true satisfaction is the reward. I recommend his book and the 10 life rules!
What an hero, young men of today need to see this
totally , totally agree
They're too busy watching Andrew Tate
Funny how Winters fought in Normandy, Market Garden, and Germany and left World War II with 5 ribbons.....yet Mark Milley has never seen combat and has a stack of ribbons all the way up to his shoulder.
I'm no fan of Milley but a glance at his uniform shows that he has a Combat Infantryman Badge with star, signifying a second award...
Yea,a legend in his own mind
Some accommodations given for service. Some given for other reasons. The q is, what did he really do to earn them.
Hmm...he did UPHOLD HIS OATH TO THE CONSTITUTION....MORE than any of the SUPPOSED LEADERS DID.
He kept any Authoritarian Insurrectionist fingers away from any RED BUTTONS.
And the RIGHT are peeved that he's done HIS DEMOCRATIC PATRIOTIC DUTY.
While milley may have served..I think he's a political officer and not fit to shine dick winters shoes
A wonderful, fitting tribute to an incredible soldier, leader, and American. You are a roll-model for future generations.
I can't believe that Winters, after WWII ended, went to -- was required to -- complete US Army Ranger School. He had been through REAL Ranger School, with all of the combat stress and deprivations and patrols and leadership and so forth. Winters should have been awarded the Ranger Tab simply based on his premier performance during the war that was over -- that he had helped to win.
I'm sure they didn't give him a hard time like they would to young recruits. Different branches use different tactics, gear, vehicles, expressions... not to mention warfare changed a lot in those years, so I'm sure he didn't mind a crash-course to familiarize himself with the Army Rangers.
Winters was not ordered to or required to attend Ranger School - in his book (page 257) he says he volunteered to go to Ranger School. Army Ranger School did not exist until after WWII. This video is full of good information but contains several errors
My father was at Utah Beach and watched the German 88 MM rounds walking toward his position…until they suddenly stopped. I can’t help but believe it was Major Winter’s action in stopping the artillery.
hahahaha what garbage
105 mm rounds
Maj Winters landed well inland from Utah
but he took out the 105's that were shelling Utah beach.@@jacktattis
@@BaseK59 was Winters rangers or airborne?
A brave and courageous man, leading other brave and courageous men. Dear God, I hope this country never forgets and keeps honoring men like these soldiers. ❤❤
I know these guys by heart. I have read their books and devoured all information about them thats how big an impact they had on me.
My ex girlfriend her pap was shifty powers I talked to him quite a bit and got one he'll of a history lesson
in reading all of the book, did the question of Dick was a Quaker or not come up?
Respect from Canada ! A great man ,a first class fighting division .God bless the great republic to our south .
Jesus you had your own respect them first
I grew up playing World War II and have always been kind of a World War II buff. Loved saving Private Ryan, but watching band of Brothers, you know, I’ve actually been sitting here for about two minutes, trying to think of some words to describe how much I love the series and I can’t find the words. Best I’ve ever seen on a screen, big or small. And he was the centerpiece. The real Dick ❤W inters must’ve been just unbelievably amazing. Where a man like this now?
We have one . Donald Trump was giving a speech this week and called on MICHAEL FLYNN whom he pointed out to in attendance to STAY HEALTHY. He will call on him in 2024. I'm thinking........ Maybe as his running mate. I would like to see a career MILITARY MAN as VICE PRESIDENT. JMO
@@mikeglasgow9618 Don't compare that jackass Flynn to the great Richard Winters, he's not even a tenth of the man Winters was.
@@mikeglasgow9618 Isn't that trump fellow the one that called veterans suckers and losers and insisted that the wounded not be seen in public? Wasn't he the same guy that dodged the draft yet ridiculed John McCain and disrespected the Gold Star Khan family? Every one of the generals who served under him called him a dangerous moron. Except for Flynn who was the shortest lived National Security Adviser ever, 18 days! Yes, both those guys are just like Dick Winters. Not!
That is a very good question. And where are the leaders of the country like we had then? Right now we have a president who is lucky not to drool too much applesauce on his bib while being fed, and a vice-president shopping for her swearing-in dress. If WW III breaks out (today is Oct 8, 2023, the 3rd day of Israel-Hammas war, with Hammas being backed by Iran which probably has nukes) she will be our war president.
Honour, loyalty ,code......we need men like that today...for their are few...
There are damn few like this in politics and absolutely none in the white house today.
One of our best for sure! God bless this man, and all of those who serve!
Thank you for your service!
I had a Sgt tell me it’s not about the number of ribbons or medals on your chest. Those don’t mean a thing in comparison to respect and admiration among your brothers and sisters in arms. This man embodies everything and more. RIP
Yes indeed
I live in Lancaster County and know well many of the places this video mentions. I often take a rest while riding the rails to trails next to Winter’s statue in Ephrata. Drive through Palmyra and had worked at Hersheys Chocolate where Winters had his recycling business for the animal feed. Thanks for the video.
The finest the US can produce is among the finest anywhere and this man was right upnthere
Please enough of the Hyperbole
Probably one of the best examples of a life well lived. RIP Major Dick Winters. FLY NAVY!!!
101st Airborne is part of the Army, not the Navy FYI. There also isn't so many captains in the Navy, because a Navy captain is a *much* higher rank than a captain in the Army.
I never said the 101st was part of the Navy, as a matter of fact we had many former military from all branches where I used to work. I'm also aware of the fact that a Navy Captain is the equivalent of an Army bird colonel, Air Force bird colonel, & Marine corp bird colonel. FLY NAVY!!! @@NixHarpinger
@@USNveteran My apologies. I see the ending of the comment is tied to your nick, not the 101st. Sorry for the needless lesson then. Have a good day, Sir.
Truly a great Officer and Combat Leader. Major Dick Winters certainly lead by example. Throughly enjoyed the Band of Brothers. 💪🏻🙏🏻✨
Yes, and he was only a 1Lt when he parachuted into Normandy. He was promoted 2 grades, within 2 yrs, making major about 5x as fast as is typical today, for unusually great performance, in continuous combat.
Thank you very much for sharing this interesting information and photos.
RIP Sir. You are a national hero sir. 👍👍
I no longer wondered why no one shows up to Sobel’s funeral, from watching this. Thanks, host.
The best part of Winters was his humility. He wasn't tough for the sake of being tough. He could teach more with a few gentle words than barking out the rulebook. He could put himself in an enlisted man's shoes, while still being professional enough to lead with the rank he worked hard to earn.
thank u for this video ........have to take a day trip to go see his memorial in his hometown ..............the 2 hour intro to the band of brother series......... some of the greatest television EVER !!!
Thank you guys
These people are literal heroes
I remember the day I heard the news that Richard Winters had died. I had tears in my eyes.
A true leader, born not made… he led his men from the front… a true hero and honorable man
“His life was gentle; and the elements. So mixed in him, that Nature might stand up. And say to all the world, THIS WAS A MAN!”
I wish we had more like him, god knows we do.
I bought the box set and in Winters was an Officer and Gentleman. and won the respect and affection of his men.
Tnx for your service sir..🙏🙏🙏
Appreciate this man, and all men that followed a true leader. There are many officers I’ve served under that was not equal. He was a rare bread I would’ve happily served under.
Wheat bread, white bread or whole grain?....
Oh you meant "breed" 😂
He is a good leader as portray by Damian Lewis , i watch this HBO Mini Series in DVD with a complete set of thier story .. the best WW2 film that ive ever seen in my entire life..
Love every characters in Easy 101
He is my favorite ww2 soldier absolute text book example of heroism and a true leader of Men
Perhaps only outdone by Audie Murphy. Although Audie Murphey did most of his heroism himself, as a SGT, rather than leading others, as an officer.
@@richard40x True........... but Sargent York should be mentioned as well,,,,,,, have a great day!
Thank you sir and GOD BLESS!
Oglądałem ten serial kilkakrotnie i mam go dzisiaj.
Sam jestem z wojsk Desantowo-Powietrznych i doceniam Jego koleje walk i przejść.

Dziękuję za takie programy.

outstanding video loved the series. was informed by a family member my great uncle joesph was one of the British paras who was ferried across the rhine by American Airbourne.
Commeth the hour, commeth the man! Such men are rare. We should always honour them and strive to follow their example.
What a great man
Are you kidding me? A top tier war hero, documentarian, died a millionaire, AND he was one of the best looking soldiers Ive ever seen? Some people were just blessed. Im 100% straight and even I would still marry that dude if he asked.
Excellent.
I love hearing about this man. A true American hero
He was the acting battalion commander since the battle of the bulge. Later advancing his rank, he became the official CO OF 2nd BATTALION
Hi there, regardless what you say or think , you are a hero, thank you
He didn't leave his weapons during the landing. The drop bag they were given was ripped off of him during the jump due the prop-blast of the aircrafts higher speeds. He arrived on the ground without his weapons, and Pack. The E. Co Commander had't gone missing. He never arrived at the AA (Assembly Area) in a timely manor, later on finding out that his aircraft had crashed. He would have been given an MIA status, until he was confirmed as a KIA: but this doesn't change the point that LGOPs formed at the AA and The 2nd Bn Cdr gave them the mission to attack and sieze the German Arty positions at Brecourt Manor. This is pretty standard Operating procedure. He was also a Ranger Instructor at Fort Benning GA.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Winters a lot more information that corrects this video.
Yes, his weapons left him during the jump, he did not leave them. And as soon as he found another weapon, he took it, and very capably used it.
Even legends pass. Godspeed warrior.
✌️🐸💨
They pass from this life, but they do not pass from our memories, nor from our Pantheon of Heroes.
Always stay together never give up, look around you, help your fellow soldiers and always follow through with your utmost ability, others will follow you and remember their is always a way out....
Thank you for your service. RIP Major Winters
Un exemple de patriotisme de courage d honneur et de respect... Normandie 🇨🇵🇺🇸
The right guy at the right place at the right time
R.I.P Major
Absolutely spot on. 🇬🇧
His motto defined the infantry "follow me"
Richard Winters was one tough badass.
Some are just natural born leaders and I met a few while serving 7 years in the 101st Abn Div
True Hero. Inspiration for all fathers. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Im gonna tell a short story: upon getting out of the army in 95.... i went home to the suburbs of Chicago.... I ended up owning a tree service and was hired by a 101st wwII soldier to prune and remove his trees in the township of Rolling Meadows Ill.... he owned a few more acres than was normal in that area... I proceeded to tell him"about my black hawk down experience"....due to the fact that he had seen my purple heart license plate....the worst part about this story was the fact that in my arrogance, i looked down upon his experience.... me, myself, and, eye... went on with my life convinced, of my own arrogance..... he told me about how the trees exploding overhead sliced off the heads of his brothers.... to this day I cant under any circumstances even begin to understand the magnitude of what he went through... GOD BLESS YOU SIR... and MAY GOD MAGNIFY HIS GLORY UPON YOU!!!!!
He did his duty as thousands of others did in ww2!
millions
And did it exceptionally!
huh
He may not have the ribbons but Band of Brothers told so many about his story and leadership skills.
He had earned a lot more than what he is wearing in this photo.
@@joehamlet7576 Yes, He was awarded the DSC, 2 Bronze stars, 2 Croix DeGuerre, and a purple heart. But he could have easily deserved another Silver Star, Gold Star, or even the CMA
@@richard40x What's a gold star and CMA? No such thing as either one of those. If by CMA, you actually mean CMH, then it is MOH, not CMH. The Medal of Honor is awarded in the name of Congress, but the word Congressional is not part of the name of the award. It has been erroneously called CMH for many, many decades.
It seems that Dick Winters most common order when he could actually lead his men as company commander was 'Follow me'
Quite a story on an old WWII veteran.
Ironically, he was a man who wanted peace but became a great combat leader.
What a great American! RIP Major Winters.
His friend Nixon was a funny guy in BoB...love that guy too.
He was 26 years old when he landed in Normandy on D-Day. Most 26-year-old men today have their faces stuck in cell phones and video games. wondering where their next piece of... is. Theirs was the "greatest generation" for a reason. To all the brave men/women who served, I salute you!
Winters would definitely not be down with your tired attempt at shaming (and for all we know, self-projection). Don't be like that.
I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have wished his war experiences on anyone.
And you are... What?... Old and grumpy.. Maybe not old but definitely grumpy.. Why don't you just shut up and stop being so grumpy?
I thought that the Band of Brothers series will glorify war. I’m glad i’m wrong. The series portrayed the bravery of both the ‘protagonist’ and the ‘antagonist ‘ soldiers plunged into a conflict they never really want. Major Winters understood the fact that human lives are sacred, he has to gather all his guts to keep his men alive despite tremendous odds.✌️
Dick Winters... an exalted member of a dying breed.
Fine Upstanding Officer
As a Huge WWII Enthusiast who has studied and learned All that I could for well over a decade now, Especially about “The Band of Brothers”, I must make a comment about something that was mentioned in this Very Cool Video- Major Dick Winters was technically NOT Court Martialed- As He would Never have achieved All that he did in the military if he was- Anyways, Since I Absolutely Love to see and read Everything I can about the Extraordinary Men of Easy Company, I Really Enjoyed this video! So, Thanks for posting it!!
Sobel tried to make him take a bogus Article 15. Winters insisted on it being tried by courtmarshal. Where he was found innocent, by the Ltc, after most of the top Sgts in the company, took Winters side, vs Sobel.
Legend.
He will always be an American HERO!
Many factual errors in this video. Winters was not drafted into the Army, he enlisted specifically to avoid having his post-college business career interrupted by the draft. He did not leave behind his weapons on D-Day. Meehan was shot down, he didn’t go missing. Winters returned to Hampton Roads, Virginia after the war, not New York City. He volunteered for Army Ranger School, he wasn’t ordered to go

Your lead in sounded like the application of a medal certification.
A true American. They don't make them like this anymore sadly
I really enjoyed watching Band of Brothers. Although I have heard that Ambrose's book had errors, that basically an honest account on the facts (but I won't swear to it🤔) Watching the series, I felt that Capt Sobel as portrayed was like General Fredenhal, who commanded the troops in North Africa prior to Patton. Both were more suited to rear echelon positions such as training and supply logistics where every thing is planned than front line positions where one needs the three elements of Adaptability, Courage, the the ability to inspire and command the loyalty under fire.
I thing the series got Sobel right, good at training troops, but he would have sucked at leading them into combat. While Winters was just as good during training, but a much better combat leader. Friedenhall was a lot like McClellen, a good organizer, but not a great trainer, or a great combat officer.
Interesting point, If he kept it to himself how did you know about it?
Imagine if Sink didn’t make that one switch in leadership. How the war could have turned out different…
No soldiers like this anymore
A true American hero. Salute RW!
These are the heroes of my childhood and many of my friends. We played Army most of the time in my neighborhood and tried to act like soldiers. I was raised by my WW2 father and all his friends were mostly former soldiers, we thought they were the bravest men in America and we were right. They would have never put up with all the bullshit going on now.
You should read the book. It might help.
I salute you mr winters with all respect
Homongous respect for this man!
Rip captain 🦅🦅🦅from a paratrooper in greece.
he was also missed by a lot of people around the world not just America
Rip WW2 Hero . Salute
He really should be promoted posthumously
I'm a big fan of the band of brothers ....and Richard "Dick" Winters
He should of run for president
This guy is the real Captain America.
