Nora Aunor's greatest ability was to express a full range of emotions through her voice. This was why she was successful not just as a singer, but also as an actress. She went against the stereotype, Philippine cinema being more biased towards the white skinned beauties due to colonial influences(Spanish and American). She was the lone exotic morena against a sea of mestizas. Her greatest rival during the golden era of Philippine cinema was Vilma Santos, an award winning actress, dancer whose pale mestiza beauty contrasted with Nora's exotic morena looks. Back then in the 60s,70s and 80s, you were either a Noranian or a Vilmanian, which was what their loyal fans were called.

You are AMAZING Waleska! You are very deeply knowledgeable of the music culture of the Philippines. She is not just a good singer but also a multi-awarded actress (locally & internationally) and a champion singer. A national-level singing competition was broadcasted live on the radio nationwide ( but not on TV; THIS WAS THE ERA of BLACK & WHITE) tAWAG NG Tanghalan 2nd or 3rd placer winners could easily be a Champion level singer s it is always very tight & tough competition and it still is until now.) A big cooking oil company PURICO (Parrot) was always the major sponsor. Congratulations to you Waleska for your research, only a few young generation Filipinos know about the origins of Tawag Ng Tanghalan.

My mother is a die-hard Noranian. If anyone say anything bad about Nora in our family, she/he will get a mouthful from mom. Now that she is 84 years old, we still tease her sometimes and she would skip meals or would ignore us if we don't take back our Nora negative comments. LOL. Nora is famous being an actress also, not just a singer. She comes from the same region as me. Her Himala movie is iconic. She is known as the Superstar of the Philippine cinema. I'm impressed that Waleska found her. We still have some of her vinyl records somewhere. To this day, there are still loyal Noranians out there. Nora Aunor has inspired so many people over the years. This brings back painful memories for me. I actually tried out for “Tawag…” when I was 15 in the 70s and passed the try outs (Bing Angeles-the auditioner-was brutal! Lots of people were stopped before they could finish their song and were told to get off the stage. It was quite nerve wracking!) but when it was time for me to actually perform, I couldn’t because my dad (who was in the US Navy in the US) wouldn’t let me and didn’t send money for the plane ticket so I never knew what could have been. I’m originally from the Visayas and have to fly to Manila for the contest which took place in May during school -another reason I wasn’t allowed to go because I couldn’t be absent from school-lame excuse, I know.
Later on, while waiting for our paperwork to go to the US, found an ad in the papers from Vicor recording studio, Nora Aunor’s recording studio at the time (this was in 1973-I just turned 18). They were looking for a new recording artist so because I was bored, I answered the ad and somehow they called me in. I had to audition 3 times and got the job. However, I had to beg off because I never told them I was on my way to the US. According to one of my aunts who accompanied me to the auditions (I had an entourage of relatives while auditioning-it’s a thing in the PI) the now famous Sharon Cuneta was chosen to replace me because she was the second choice. Of course, I didn’t know who she was then found out she had become quite famous in the PI.
Due to these circumstances, I firmly believe that no matter how talented a person is, when it’s not in that person’s destiny, it won’t happen. Of course, my aunt would always remind me of the “lost opportunity” every chance she gets. I believe it just wasn’t my destiny to be famous, that’s all.
I don’t sing as often anymore esp since I’ve developed asthma and allergies cuz I can’t hold my notes like I used to. I believe it’s from moving all over the US and now, Okinawa. My lung capacity is no longer as expansive as it once was.
Since I’ve just retired and will be going back to the PI for good, I’m hoping my allergies and asthma will disappear which is probably impossible but one can always hope, right? Yes, painful memories alright…

Before Nora Aunor rose to stardom via Tawag ng Tanghalan, it was Diomedes Maturan (grand champion 1958) who breezed through the competitive Philippine
showbusiness because of his golden voice. Like Nora, Diomedes did not possess the typical mestizo/mestiza features which were the norm during that time. But because of his velvety voice, not only did he receive recording contracts but lucrative movie offers as well.
Incidentally, the very first Tawag ng Tanghalan champion was the Spanish mestizo Jose "Pepe" Pimentel (champion 1955). He also became popular in his own right although more as a tv show host. As a singer his repertoire was mostly spanish songs. In fact his winning piece in the championship was the popular ANGELITOS NEGROS, a bolero based on a poem by a Venezuelan poet.
Hope you could also react to these two legendary Filipino singers.
