  • Each month The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation hosts a Meet the Scientist Webinar featuring a researcher discussing the latest findings related to mental illness. In October, 2018, the Foundation featured Dr. Marina R. Picciotto of Yale University School of Medicine.
Description: Nicotine is the primary addictive component of tobacco. We now know a great deal about the targets for nicotine in the brain and the circuits involved in its behavioral effects. There is also a longstanding association between tobacco smoking, anxiety and depressive disorders. In this presentation, I will discuss studies in mice and humans that have identified the targets and brain areas that are important for the addictive effects of nicotine and how this relates to brain circuits that are impaired in individuals with anxiety and depression.

I found a case where a nicotine patch was used to stop a 5 year old from having 50 seizures a night. She was resistant to medications. We need more research

Yes more likely. Blocking certain Nicotine receptors contribute as a anti-depression.

Because our government relies on Australia and Great Britain for results from testing groups of people and physiology. However, we have a difficult culture so that is a big factor, and you will hear, we think this or that because our culture is not a factor in the research. Our government wants us to fail, think of the billions of dollars in taxes that are collected off cigarettes and billions to quit with smoking aides. The same with sugar in our foods and obesity.

So what I'm understanding is that because these smokers are actively opening and blocking their receptors sometimes they block the amount of ACh in the brain which can cause symptoms if too much ACh is in the brain?

PLEASE SEE YOUR DOCTOR TO HELP YOU QUIT.
      Short answer: probably, yeah.
Yes, the other physical and habitual withdrawals are pretty awful but will stop in time and I think everyone just has to push through that part. But if you're already short on mood chemicals because you have depression, there's WAY more at play here. Again, PLEASE SEE YOUR DOCTOR TO HELP YOU QUIT. I don't want anyone, ever, to have to go through what I did. I've been doing great on 300mg Wellbutrin and lots of phenylalanine, but I came to it very belatedly and besides that's just me.

I wish Wellbutrin worked for me... when I tried it for smoking cessation, it worked great for a little while (no cigarette cravings, no depression), but then I had “serum sickness,” which is basically an allergic reaction to medication. I can’t take Wellbutrin! What is phenylalanine?

    • @BethanyMeredith

      @@markdaniels7174 Bummer!
Phenylalanine is an amino acid and the raw material for dopamine and norepinephrine, the same chemicals that Wellbutrin affects. I've gotten a lot of mileage from Julia Ross's The Mood Cure; maybe you could too. But of course always talk to your MD...
