  • October 30, 2014 | Dr. Vandana Shiva discusses how the future of the planet is intimately linked to the future of food, both because everyone must eat and because industrial agriculture has the largest impact on ecosystems and our health. Trained in physics and philosophy, Dr. Vandana Shiva is renowned for her activism against GMOs, globalization, and patents on seeds and traditional foods. She co-founded Navdanya, which promotes seed saving and organic farming and has more than 70,000 farmer-members. She is the recipient of the 1993 Alternative Nobel Peace Prize (the Right Livelihood Award) and has authored several bestselling books.

@@setumomahakoe7791 Indian environmental scientist blasts anti-GMO celebrity Vandana Shiva for ‘baseless’ assault on biotech crops June 9, 2020 "A reader curious about celebrities’ role in the radical environmental movement emailed me recently. He wondered if …. their claims about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) were credible.
[Editor’s note: Vijay Jayaraj holds an M.Sc in environmental science from the University of East Anglia, England]
He was particularly interested in anti-GMO claims by …. Vandana Shiva. Shiva is no newbie to GMO. She speaks often against it. Her celebrity status gives her high visibility. Recently, Shiva claimed that Bill Gates perpetuates Monsanto’s work by promoting GMO in India. She said GMO crops have a lower yield than non-GMO. She also said farmers would not choose GMO if not for Gates’s influence.
      Her claims are baseless.

I come from a region with high agricultural output. I know many farmers. The Indian government has no control over their choices of seeds. Farmers are concerned about their livelihood. Most prefer crops that give larger yield. Why? You can guess. They give higher profit margins. Farmers prefer [biotech] crops. Only a few experiment with organic farming.
Many so-called “organic” products in India have high traces of toxins. That makes them dangerous. But they also cost twice as much as non-“organic.” Expensive, organic coconut oils from India sold in the United States may not be completely organic, despite certification.
Shiva is popular in the media. But 95% of the farmers I know (hundreds in my own family circle) reject her ideas.
India’s two major political parties support GMO. True, a few individuals side with the anti-GMO lobby. But the dominant position is based on solid scientific testing.
Yet anti-GMO groups have blocked GM crops through court interference. Shiva is a leading agent.
Shiva’s claims on GMO farming are false. She calls Golden Rice a hoax. Golden Rice is a GM variant that can help eradicate vitamin A deficiencies that cause blindness and death. Scientific authorities in nations like the US and Canada declare it safe and beneficial. Over 100 Nobel Laureates have hailed it.
Although Shiva is involved in an anti-GM cartel, she is ignorant about GM. She is neither a biologist nor an expert on genetic science. Her bachelor’s degree was in physics. She specialized in the philosophy of science. Her doctoral dissertation mused on the “hidden variables and locality in quantum theory.” Vandana Shiva is a radical environmentalist. It is so wonderful to hear Dr. Shiva speak so accurately on these matters. I agree with her on so many points. As a farmer, I agree that we need to be allowed to use heirloom seeds for our crops. These seeds evolved naturally and are the rightly owned property of every one of us. Rehabilitate the soil and use heirloom seeds that have a natural immunity to pests, diseases, and adverse weather conditions. The farmers will be healthier and richer. We were trusting and we got conned, it is time to own up to our mistakes of allowing our soil and crops to be compromised just so the corporations can get rich while impoverishing us. FREEDOM FOR FARMERS NOW.

This was a very eye opening talk that she gave. I’ve only recently heard her talk on a couple of podcasts and today on one of Russell Brand’s podcasts I was driven to look her up CZcams and this was the first video I’ve watched. I’ve been against Genetic Modification of plants and animals since I first heard and became aware of what it was. I’ve had my own garden and grown a lot of my own vegetables and fruits in the past but haven’t been able to in recent years as I don’t live in the same area due to a personal situation and was forced to move to where I’m at and I am not allowed to put in a garden where I live now and haven’t been able to do a small container garden yet even and it has been so hard because I thrive when I have my own garden. I have not felt whole and have felt as if I’m slowly dying inside. I didn’t even realize until this moment just how much it has affected me. And now have listened to Vandana Shiva here, I really made the connection that my mental and emotional and physical health is directly affected not just by the foods that I eat, it’s also greatly affected by directly having my hands in the soil and growing, without pesticides and other unnatural supplements, fresh living food from planting the seeds, watering, weeding, watching for slugs and snails and other destructive pests and removing them through picking them or using natural pest controls like beneficial insects, (like lady bugs and spiders), and using natural composting tea I’ve made and other organic means of soil enrichment, to the harvesting of the fruits and vegetables and then the turning the soil and working the naturally decayed plants left after harvesting back into the soil to put those nutrients back into the soil and then beginning the planning of the garden for the next spring and beginning that cycle again not only is good for my body, it enhances my brain and is vital to my mental and emotional wellbeing. It is really as vital to my heart and soul as oxygen, water, and food is to my body. It is necessary for me to grow them, to be intimately involved in caring for the plants, almost as if they were my babies and know exactly what they have been fed and to experience such joy when they grow and provide such an abundance of food that I am able to share, in fact, must share the harvest with other friends, and neighbors because I can’t let it go to waste. And the taste is better than any of the ones I could buy in the grocery store.

@sun flower How so? I have a mountain of evidence that Shiva lies. Let's start with this open letter from 39 top scientists to Shiva the Destroyer - About the anti-biotech activist Vandana Shiva: Shiva has attracted intense criticism from the scientific community for perpetuating long-debunked myths about agriculture, biotechnology and food safety.

"Shiva is scheduled to speak in late January at Stanford University and the University of California, Santa Cruz on “equitable and sustainable” farming methods. Her positions on a variety of issues have irked and at times outraged scientists who consider her a disseminator of misinformation who profits at the rate of $40,000 a lecture (or more) to spread propaganda critical of mainstream views of biotechnology. Raised in prosperity, this Indian Brahmin was formally trained as a philosopher, embracing and promoting a form of Quantum Theory that is now widely dismissed. She often falsely claims that she is a trained physicist, and those false ‘scientific’ credentials are often echoed by her supporters. The GLP has carried numerous articles about her history of misstatements and fabrications (here, here, here). She was the subject of a scathing critique, “Seeds of Doubt,” by Michael Specter of The New Yorker, which documented her history of misleading claims and what Specter maintained often verged on anti-science gibberish.
For more than three decades, she has relentlessly campaigned against globalization, focusing on food and agriculture socio-economic issues and an opposition to GMOs, free trade and intellectual property rights. She alternately promotes land redistribution, indigenous and peasant farmers’ rights, organic-only food production and ayurvedic health practices over conventional medicines, all of which she characterizes as an “earth democracy” movement necessary to restore “harmony,” people and nature.
Shiva receives financial backing from high-profile activist groups such as the Center for Food Safety, which shares offices with her in Washington. Among her most controversial talking points is her false claim that there was no hunger in India prior to the Green Revolution. The truth is almost 180 degrees the opposite, as the Green Revolution, marked in part by the introduction of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides enable massive increases in food production. A recent review of the evidence shows, “the production of cereal crops tripled during this period, with only a 30% increase in land area cultivated.” Shiva also blames the Green Revolution for increasing poverty, indebtedness and despair among farmers. Her notorious allegation that the introduction of insect-resistant GMO crops in India led many farmers to commit suicide has been evaluated and dismissed as inaccurate. Shiva is also a fierce opponent of so-called Golden Rice, a crop engineered to combat vitamin A deficiency in developing countries.
In response to the scheduling of her two talks at Stanford and UC Santa Cruz, 39 scientists from around the world co-authored an open letter to both universities protesting the invitations. The signatories told the GLP that their aim is to alert the events’ organizers, participants and attendees to the numerous falsehoods in Shiva’s philosophy. The letter, reproduced below in full, blasts Shiva for her “use of anti-scientific rhetoric to support unethical positions.” Neither university has scheduled a scientist to present the evidence-based case for crop biotechnology." geneticliteracyproject.org/2020/01/14/39-biotech-experts-open-letter-protests-anti-gmo-activist-vandana-shivas-anti-science-talks-at-stanford-and-uc-santa-cruz/

@sun flower "In June 2014, Indian and international media reported that Navdanya and Vandana Shiva were named in a leaked, classified report by India's Intelligence Bureau (IB), which was prepared for the Indian Prime Minister's Office.[47]
The leaked IB report raises concerns over the foreign-funding of Indian NGOs whose campaigning activities, the report claims, are hampering India's growth and development. In its report, the IB said that Indian NGOs, including Navdanya, receive money from foreign donors under the 'charitable garb' of campaigning for human rights or women's equality, but instead use the money for nefarious purposes. "These foreign donors lead local NGOs to provide field reports which are used to build a record against India and serve as tools for the strategic foreign policy interests of the Western governments," the IB report states.[48]
Investigative journalist Michael Specter, in an article in The New Yorker on 25 August 2014 entitled "Seeds of Doubt",[10] raised concerns over a number of Shiva's claims regarding GMOs and some of her campaigning methods. He wrote: "Shiva's absolutism about G.M.O.s can lead her in strange directions. In 1999, ten thousand people were killed and millions were left homeless when a cyclone hit India's eastern coastal state of Orissa. When the U.S. government dispatched grain and soy to help feed the desperate victims, Shiva held a news conference in New Delhi and said that the donation was proof that "the United States has been using the Orissa victims as guinea pigs" for genetically-engineered products, although she made no mention about that those same products are approved and consumed in the United States. She also wrote to the international relief agency Oxfam to say that she hoped it wasn't planning to send genetically modified foods to feed the starving survivors."[10]
Cases of plagiarism have been pointed out against Vandana Shiva. Birendra Nayak has published on her plagiarism involving copying verbatim from a 1996 article in Voice Gopalpur in her 1998 book Stronger than Steel.[51] Several paragraphs of an article by S Faizi on the Plachimada/Coca-Cola issue published in The Statesman in 2015 were plagiarized by Vandana Shiva in an article she published a year later.[52]

Journalist Keith Kloor, in an article published in Discover on 23 October 2014 entitled "The Rich Allure of a Peasant Champion", revealed that Shiva charges US$40,000 per speaking lecture, plus a business-class air ticket from New Delhi. Kloor wrote: "She is often heralded as a tireless 'defender of the poor,' someone who has courageously taken her stand among the peasant farmers of India. Let it be noted, however, that this champion of the downtrodden doesn't exactly live a peasant's lifestyle."[53] Wikipedia - Shiva

@sun flower "While I appreciate Vandana Shiva’s passion for the environment and crop diversity, most of her claims have been readily debunked. Her campaigns are subsidized by millions of dollars of contributions by organic food companies to spread lies about conventional agriculture to push an agenda. In my opinion, it is admirable if someone chooses to be an organic farmer-there are many ways to address food security issues as long as we promote cooperation and coexistence-but there is something wrong with lying to people for profit, such as her debunked claims that GMOs are provoking Indian farmers to commit suicide. [Read GLP GMO FAQ addressing Shiva’s accusation]. She doesn’t back up her claims with reputable evidence and what she claims about conventional agriculture isn’t backed by science.
Needless to say, a huge percentage of what came out of Shiva’s mouth was myths and misrepresentations. She spent a lot of time tearing into Norman Borlaug, the scientist and ‘father of the Green Revolution-he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal before his death-and is credited with saving hundreds of millions of lives, and accused farmers of being “the last caretakers of the land.” Seriously? Who does that? Shiva is no friend to modern farmers or technology. Her misinformation was appalling and needless to say I was not impressed.

It was painful to sit through her nonsense, and the whole time I was wondering if she has ever even ridden in a combine or ever been to a large scale farm a day in her life. While she railed against “industrial, chemically intensive agriculture,” I wish she knew that farmers today are using less toxic chemicals than ever before. When complaining about soil and water quality, I wish she would connect with us and learn that farmers enroll in conservation programs and are the ultimate stewards of the land. Organic and conventional farms have a lot in common: both types of farms may or may not use chemicals, both types can do conservation methods like soil testing, crop rotation, cover crops, etc. This is not the agenda she had though. Apparently only organic farmers are concerned about sustainability, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
Shiva also shared the myth that GMOs kill bees, all while completely ignoring the fact that GMOs eliminate our need to spray insecticides, which helps beneficial insects. GMOs cause suicides, Monsanto is trying to poison everyone, monocultures! Patents! Seed saving! The list of myths goes on. The reality is that farmers have hundreds of seed companies to choose from, all different types of crops can have patents including organic, and today’s farmers don’t want to save seeds. My head was spinning with how disconnected she is to modern farming and how much she really doesn’t understand our industry, while she gets paid to talk about this with no formal training or educational background in agriculture. Say what, now?
But there was hope! I was happy to know that there was a Q&A afterwards and I wasn’t going to sit back and let Shiva’s false accusations go without saying something. I encouraged everyone to connect with us as farmers. I took issue with her referring to pesticides as “poison,” as organic production uses pesticides too, and they are sometimes more toxic and more frequently used than the chemicals used by non-organic farmers. By her definition ALL food would be poison, but as any scientist would tell you, it’s the dose that makes the poison. I mentioned that when we spray the herbicide glyphosate (Monsanto’s Roundup) on our fields it is at a rate of 22 ounces per acre, which is less than 2 soda cans over an area of land the size of a football field. We only spray two days out of an entire year. Simply said, the food conventional farmers grow is not scary. It’s thanks to biotechnology that we are using less chemicals than ever before and no longer having to spray insecticides, which HELPS beneficial insects like bees, and does not hurt them as she misleadingly claimed. Our farm holds the award for “Iowa farmers of the year” in soil and water conservation because, as a result of modern technology including the use of genetically modified seeds, we use no till, cover crops and crop rotation. Biotechnology is doing great things for farmers and allows us to grow more food on less land while using less water, fuel, and inputs.

Shiva gave me the stink eye but didn’t say a word while I was speaking, other than “thanks.”
I really didn’t know what to expect from the crowd, but surprisingly, I was applauded! After I left I was approached by a group of people who thanked me. They said “You did a great job. I applaud your bravery. We appreciate hearing multiple sides of a story. You are welcome here,” etc. It was great. I was also approached by a security guard who wanted me to be aware that he would be following me around a bit to ensure my safety in case anyone tried to cause trouble. He even walked me to my car so that was nice. Surprisingly, not a single hater. None.
I want to share this story to encourage you all to stand up for the truth. For farmers, agronomists, scientists, etc speaking up HAS to be a part of our job description nowadays. We are the experts, we are the ones that have the most education and firsthand expertise on the topic. Don’t let misinformed activists tell our stories and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. A situation that looks intimidating could be the best opportunity to educate. If we all do our part to advocate for science and agriculture, we CAN make a difference." geneticliteracyproject.org/2016/11/21/iowa-farmer-challenges-activist-vandana-shiva-myth-filled-anti-gmo-lecture/

@sun flower Indian environmental scientist blasts anti-GMO celebrity Vandana Shiva for ‘baseless’ assault on biotech crops June 9, 2020 "A reader curious about celebrities’ role in the radical environmental movement emailed me recently.

Her anti-GMO policies reduce poor farmers’ profits and deprive other poor people of affordable food. Pop-culture celebrities like her, who pontificate on matters on which they know little or nothing, are a menace to agricultural and economic development." clashdaily.com/2020/06/pop-culture-celebrities-a-hurdle-to-agricultural-and-economic-liberation/

I had wondered what happens when birds in nature die and their resting place is the earth (of course) and I researched. How amazing to learn! We as humans need to use organic materials provided by nature. There are good insects that feed upon the destructive pests! Plants that "protect" crops. Human and animal and plant biodegradable refuse, are all great fertilizers for the soil. Also practicing crop rotation every few years and then every 7th year (or such) letting the land "rest" (lie fallow) to restore it. Shiva and the haters who upvote her are the evil here. About the anti-biotech activist Vandana Shiva: Shiva has attracted intense criticism from the scientific community for perpetuating long-debunked myths about agriculture, biotechnology and food safety.

@serendipidus1 *A new study on the increase in the heath of farmers since GMO crop science has become wide spread:
      *
Peer reviewed and published 27 September 2019
"GM crops, particularly Bt cotton, has resulted in significant reductions in pesticide poisoning cases due to reduced applications and reduced levels of insecticide exposure. Reductions in farmer pesticide poisonings have been quantified in China, India, Pakistan and South Africa. Often cases of pesticide poisoning are not formally reported to health centers and the results on pesticide poisoning may be underestimated due to the lack of reporting. In South Africa, farmers reduced pesticide applications from 11.2 per year to 3.8, with reported cases of pesticide poisoning declining from over 50 per year to less than 10 over the first four years of Bt cotton adoption (Bennet et al. 2003). One-third of non-Bt cotton farmers in China reported cases of pesticide poisoning, compared to 9% of Bt cotton producing farmers (Hossain et al. 2004). Assessing the health impacts in India, reveals a reduction in cases of pesticide poisoning of 2.4 - 9 million cases per year (Kouser and Qaim 2011). Cumulatively, since 2003, when Bt cotton was first commercialized in India, a minimum of 38 million fewer instances of pesticide poisoning have occurred, with an upper potential of 144 million. Farmers in Pakistan growing non-Bt cotton reported up to seven instances of pesticide poisoning in the growing season with 35% reporting no instances, versus Bt cotton farmers reporting up to six poisonings with 45% reporting none (Kouser and Qaim 2013). A medical assessment of 246 Chinese farmers, involving 35 health indicators, found that fungicides associated with the production of non-Bt cotton had linkages to damaged liver function, while the insecticides used in non-Bt cotton production may be associated with severe nerve damage (Zhang et al. 2016). The use of non-glyphosate tolerant crops was found to likely reduce renal function and decrease serum folic acid.
      CHANGES IN FARMER SUICIDES
Mental health challenges and issues affect all walks of life and economic sectors, with agriculture being no different. Access to sufficient mental health resources can be problematic within the agriculture sector due to rural areas, remote locations and lack of access to mental health support systems. Unfortunately, suicide is a concern in agriculture. India has one of the highest suicide ratesin the world and research has examined the relationship between farmer suicide and the adoption of GM cotton. Research examining the relationship between farm suicide and Bt cotton adoption revealed a plateauing of the suicide rate following the commercialization of Bt cotton (Gruère and Sengupta 2011). Farmer suicides were trending upward from 15,000 per year, peaking in 2004, the year after Bt cotton
was first commercialized in India. By 2007, the actual suicide rate was 25% below the extrapolated suicide rate. Cumulatively, the reduced rate of suicide associated with the adoption of Bt cotton represents the prevention of a minimum of 75,000 farmer suicides.
      LOWERING CANCER INCIDENCES
The development of insect resistant crop varieties has begun to have a noticeable potential to improve human health through the reduction of cancer rates. Prior to the commercialization of Bt crops, maize in particular, insect damage to the harvested crop increased the potential for the development of harmful health effects. A study of 21 years of maize production quantified that Bt maize contained lower concentrations of mycotoxins (29%), fumonisins (31%) and thricotecens (37%) (Pellegrino et al. 2018). Mycotoxins are both toxic and carcinogenic to humans and animals and are considerably more concerning in developing economy food systems where access to food safety toxicity tests are less prevalent. Fumonisins are correlated to being the cause of higher rates of neural tube defects in high maize-based diets (Missmer et al. 2006). With food security challenges existing in many developing countries corn containing mycotoxins are consumed as part of the household diet due the lack of any other option.
      NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS
GM crops have made significant contributions to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular goals one (reducing poverty) and two (reducing hunger). While increased yields have contributed to higher household incomes, which reduces poverty, the increased yields have also enhanced household food security. Biofortified GM crops have been adopted, increasing micronutrient availability (Hefferon 2014). Nutritionally enhanced foods improve an individual’s nutrient intake, preventing and/or treating leading causes of death such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Improving the nutritional content of daily food consumption certainly has day to day effects, but of significant importance are the long term effects that extend for decades over the course of an individual’s lifetime. In many instances, improving macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, fiber) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, functional metabolites) has significant childhood health improvements, such as reducing blindness due to the lack of vitamin availability. Improved food nutrient content, especially the increase in mineral availability, contributes to improved immunity systems and reduces stunting. In many developing countries, plant-based nutrient intake accounts for one hundred per cent of an individual’s nutrient diet, further highlighting the importance of nutritionally enhanced crop derived foods. As the later in life benefits from improved childhood nutrition are better understood, the full value of nutritionally enhanced GM crops and foods, may not be realized for several decades." see the full paper at onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/pbi.13261

Genetically engineered and modified plants such as tobacco, wheat, barley, rye, soy and corn were processed in the 30’s, and 40’s by biotech engineers before the term GMO’s. I believe it all started with increasing the nicotine in tobacco plants. And, then the rest mentioned above happened for distribution to poor countries.

Shiva is nothing more than a professional fraud. Real scientists, some US citizens, are revolted by her claims. They wrote an open letter to her - About the anti-biotech activist Vandana Shiva: *Shiva has attracted intense criticism from the scientific community for perpetuating long-debunked myths about agriculture, biotechnology and food safety.
      *

This is essential because the discussion around crop biotechnology has become a pitched political battle as anti-GMO activists continue to spin conspiracies to undermine the credibility of academically trained scientists. The work of US Right to Know, an organic industry-funded special interest group, illustrates this point. The anti-GMO outfit has filed freedom of information requests on over 50 university faculty that have published peer-reviewed journal articles that quantify the benefits of GM crops. If the company (which the Wall Street Journal identified as Nouryon) did not cough up the money, Litzenburg would send in a “parade of horribles” (i.e., cancer patients) like he did to Monsanto, according to an affidavit. Regenerative agriculture without chemicals is the way forward and deserts can be reclaimed and the poor have a chance at sustainability and the knowledge of sustainability has to be spread. You just proved you are gullible to professional frauds. *About the anti-biotech activist Vandana Shiva:* Shiva has attracted intense criticism from the scientific community for perpetuating long-debunked myths about agriculture, biotechnology and food safety.
