  • Environmental leader, eco-feminist, philosopher, and quantum physicist, Vandana Shiva's expertise seems to have no limits. She has become a globally respected activist for grassroots and alternative globalization movements, biodiversity, bioethics, intellectual property rights, and sustainable living. Some of her books include Staying Alive (1988), The Violence of the Green Revolution (1992), Monocultures of the Mind (1993), Biopiracy (1997), Water Wars (2002), Earth Democracy (2005), and Soil Not Oil (2008). Shiva's scholarship and activism has been recognized internationally and she has won numerous awards, including the Right Livelihood Award, considered the Alternative Nobel Prize.
Ian Mauro is a Canada Research Chair in "human dimensions of environmental change" at Mount Allison University, in Sackville, New Brunswick. He is both a researcher and filmmaker, with a PhD in environmental science, and his work focuses on hunter, farmer and fisher knowledge regarding environmental change, specifically issues related to food security and climate change. He first interviewed Dr. Shiva in 2002, as part of his doctoral research on farmer knowledge and biotechnology in the Canadian prairies, which in part resulted in the documentary film Seeds of Change (www.seedsofchangefilm.org/). He subsequently went on to make various films, including Qapirangajuq: Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change (www.isuma.tv/lo/en/inuit-knowl..., with acclaimed Inuk filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk, as well as the Climate Change in Atlantic Canada project (www.climatechangeatlantic.com).
The conversation between Drs. Mauro and Shiva took place on February 26th, 2012 at Mount Allison University, with a full audience of 300+ people. This was Shiva's only New Brunswick event, on a larger Maritime tour, and she went beyond the surface issues facing our world today and explored, through conversation, the solutions and deep changes required for humans to find a more balanced relationship with the earth and each other.

I love to hear her talks, but her answers to the questions are also illuminating, and expand on everything that she says and has built up. She is the leader of a growing movement of people who are prepared to stand up to the big corporations who are trying to take over the world. Her term 'ecofeminism' isn't the usual feminist stuff - it's because women were traditionally the keepers of the seed, and the collectors of water, and they knew what happens and has happened at grass roots level - and Vandana Shiva learnt from them.
Somebody asked a question about the Punjab, where they still do a lot of farming with GMOs and pesticides, so they still face the problems of dead soil, and poisons which affect the population. She said that Prince Charles has set up a charity there to promote organic farming. I'm glad, because he led the way in Britain, and was ridiculed for decades about his work; but he continued, and now people follow where he led. There is a global hub of people who are working with Mother Earth - so there is growing strong opposition to the global group who are raping her for her resources.

I am just part way through this but I feel that we need an alternative word for feminism in this case. To me modern feminism and similar movements are founded on the false premise that women and men are equal and then they go on to over compensate for the perceived injustice and past inequality between the sexes. Feminism has therefore become an ugly word. With Dr. Shiva, I feel no such negativity and what she is talking about is the glaring lack of female participation in science. I feel she would agree that women should have equal standing in society while maintaining their own uniqueness and that instead of being the same as men in all respects, men and women complement one another and should recognise and respect this harmonious and natural relationship.

    Ban Shariah law!
    Shariah means: find the water!
Goes back to Hagierah and Ishmael. They created an oasis: water and vegetation and shared with people on foot, pilgrims.
Five pillars religion i'shariah is the cause of war it's not. Peace.
Salaam means calm, Be still and KNOW! Surah 78:1-16
    Tidings the Great News.
We possess or are presented by verse1-16
Life possess not speech or book.. history or His story?
18-40: is written on the basis of conjecture(opinion or idea) that is not based on definite KNOWledge. Ideas man formed by guessing and speculation(the act of forming an opinions)
About what has happened or what might happen without Knowing all the facts.
This surah reveals our history are in our presence space(heaven). Clouds pouring water, vegetation.
Surah reveal clarity to a person or to people who feel oppressed and need SPACE to JUST BE.
What is unfolding, what do I sense, I go to my lowest common denominator..IAM.
If I am oppressed, the wounded mind : "question, " what do I believe?
When I was forced to believe speech and book by religions, whose language who is, Arabic, I have to read, but do not understand.
Critical thinking what do I Know now, realise and recognise," know happens in the power of now. Now is the root of KNOW!
One is connected to Allah by breath, first breath we took and will breathe out at death. Nabi Muhamad do not let me breathe, He points to Tidings is Great News. For this I thank him. He said I am a man just like others. H
I am not a jew, Christian,Muslim but I am the way, the truth and the life.
Be still and know!! Be free to live side by side with others
    Life is in breathing.
    Life is a breathe away.
I just need my breath to find the water (Shariah, a command to quench thirst.)
Eat from the tree that's great (Tidings ) for food, to still hunger, etc
These feelings is direct guidance, I don't need five pillars .

Ms. Shiva is not a "quantum physicist" she is a philosopher who earned her degree in the philosophy of physics based on her claims that Bell's Theorem was not valid. Bell's Theorem is a well established foundation of modern physics accepted by the scientific community as valid. Ms. Shiva falsely claims there was no famine in India prior to the Green Revolution and promotes various false claims and irresponsible theories about sustainable agriculture that, if adopted, would relegate the majority of the world's peasant farmers to a life of miserable subsistence. Oh the lies!
First, she says her PhD was in Quantum Physics. Her PhD was in Philosophy of Science.
She also states that the substantial equivalence principle says that "a genetically modified seed and food is treated as equal to the non modified one". The is a blatant lie. Actually: "Substantial equivalence embodies the concept that if a new food or food component is found to be substantially equivalent to an existing food or food component, it can be treated in the same manner with respect to safety." So first, it only concerns food safety. Second, before applying the principle to conclude that the effects of the GM and non-GM products are the same, one must first establish that the biochemical composition is comparable.
She says: "So the US goes around the world saying there is no evidence, but they never looked." This is once again clearly false. There are many independent studies on the matter, based on both consumption by test animals as well as on statistic analysis of the US population since consumtion of GMOs started.
    ...

The study was entitled _"Bt Cotton and Farmer Suicides in India"_, and here is the third paragraph of its abstract:
_"We first show that there is no evidence in available data of a "resurgence" of farmer suicides in India in [years 2002 to 2007]. Second, we find that _*_Bt cotton technology has been very effective overall in India_*_. However, the context in which Bt cotton was introduced has generated disappointing results in some particular districts and seasons. Third, our analysis clearly shows that _*_Bt cotton is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for the occurrence of farmer suicides_*_. In contrast, many other factors have likely played a prominent role. Nevertheless, in specific regions and years, where Bt cotton may have indirectly contributed to farmer indebtedness, leading to suicides, its failure was mainly the result of the context or environment in which it was planted."_ [3]
Another extract makes the situation even more ironic:
_"Our analysis is sufficiently well documented to _*_discredit the possibility of a naïve direct causal or reciprocal relationship between Bt cotton and farmer suicides_*_. […] The trend in farmer suicides in India appears to have slowed down since the year when Bt cotton was introduced, which would certainly not have happened if Bt cotton were responsible for increasing farmer suicides. […] Therefore, _*_it is not only inaccurate but simply wrong to blame the use of Bt cotton as the primary cause of farmer suicides in India_*_. In fact, our overview of the evidence suggests that Bt cotton has been quite successful in most states and years in India, contributing to an impressive leap in average cotton yields, as well as a decrease in pesticide use and an increase in farmer revenues."_ [3]
_"And for God's sake, learn how to use proper English."_
      > Sorry. English is not my native language. But I really think this kind of remark is quite a lame move anyway.

LOL she's not a physicist nor an "expert". Just a philosopher and a con artist.

You think this is no important lie?
The problem is that 1) what she says is often utter bullshit, 2) she actively uses her "PhD in quantum physics" to make people trust her.
For example: _"Yes, I am an ecologist and feminist. But _*_I am also a scientist_*_ - a fact that Natasha intentionally avoids mentioning. _*_As a Quantum Physicist_*_, I have been trained to look at the interconnectedness and non-separability of processes, which in a mechanistic and reductionist paradigm, are seen as separate and unrelated. _*_As a scientist_*_, . . ."_ (www.navdanya.org/blog/?p=744)
Note also how she uses quantum physics to give legitimity to her words and invalidate the preexisting economic system (presented as "mechanistic", hence unable to fully take into account how te world works): _"which in a mechanistic and reductionist paradigm, are seen as separate and unrelated"._
This is something she did multiple times: _"You know, in mechanical physics, you can only touch that mug by banging against it. It's called action by contact. And quantum theory recognizes you can have action at a distance, because everything is related. And in ecology it's call the butterfly effect: in the Amazon a butterfly can create a storm somewhere else. [...] And therefore the polarized dualistic thinking that has been the dominant culture of 200 years of scientific though, in a way quantum theory puts it aside and connect us again to indigenous cultures, ancient knowledge systems [...]"_ (czcams.com/video/4cdFXKDAaQw/video.html)
Actually, this way to say that she does understand interconnectivity of things while the economic paradigm cannot is bullshit. Interconnectivity at large, macroscopic scale has nothing to do with quantum physics, and the butterfly effect is actually explained by classical physics.
The lie on her qualifications is even more abject since she uses others' academic credentials to attack them: _"Kavin studied Business and Marketing. But lists herself as a “science defender” and “science popularizer” [...] Her undergraduate education in Business and Marketing [...] Kavin herself feels no need to be a scientist. Having a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, and claiming the word “science” for “business development”, without the need to understand underlying scientific realities. [...] Kavin and other SCIENCE-writers-for-hire, mostly Bachelor Degree holders (e.g. Mark Lynas - Bachelor’s Degree in History and Politics) . . ."_ (vandanashiva.com/?p=321)
