Thank you so much! I tell you, that was the scariest load of wash I’ve ever done in 45 years, lol. I’m not sure if I used too little detergent and sanitizer but I washed my king size duvet alone in a 6 load washer so amounts were hard to calculate but I figured erring on the side of too little was probably better than too much. Now it’s alone in a 45 pound dryer, lol. I have wanted one forever and Amazon delivered it today but I just didn’t feel comfortable sleeping with it before washing it.

Drying will be more challenging when doing this at home. If you don't get it dry, it can mildew. Consider halfway drying it, then take it outside and let it line dry. Be sure to keep an eye on it when in the drier, as you don't want to scorch the cotton shell. After it is dry, you may find it necessary vigorously shake it out. Down typically doesn't clump when dried in a drier, but when you line dry, it may. Avoid direct sunlight.

Thank you to see you answer comments is fantastic Unfortunately I have a goose down that my cat was sick and urinated in many spots I didn’t know bleach is appropriate What about ammonia? Also is there a way of replacing down one had ripped
Sorry to learn of your issues. We can't speak for Ammonia. We see no reason why you could not try it. As far as repairing the comforter. You can sew it up. Be sure to put a lot of stitched in it as down will find its way out. If you have lost the down, unfortunately we know of no companies that sell down, and, getting it back into the compartment would be nearly impossible. Such wonderful info! Thank u! I just got a down comforter that I ordered online. I took it out of the zippered plastic case, and noticed a very bad smell from the comforter. Probably the mixture of both the plastic and down. Any suggestions on how to remove the stink? I aired it outside, but still smells. Thanks!
Look at the law tag, most likely it was made in China. Many comforters coming from China are not cleaned properly. Try washing as we demonstrate in this video. This should help.

Dunno if you covered the topic, but what about storing a down comforter - what are things to do, things to avoid, etc?
The best way to store it is in a cool dry space in a bag that is breathable. If you don't have one, consider wrapping it up in an old sheet and tying it up with some string or rope.
What about detergents which are made purposely to wash down? Are they superior to other everyday detergents? Some say they do not wash down oils out and thus maintain down loft?
We can't speak to these detergents. If they are specifically formulated for cleaning down, they should be fine. Detergents may strip oils from the down so a mild detergent should be used, A down comforter can get soiled, so your options become clean it or don't clean it.
Use a non enzyme soap. Air outdoors in the sun as regularly as possible for mites. Never use (toxic) bleach on bedding.... dryer balls help tons

Vinegar is a great cleaner and should cause no harm. Try searching for vinegar hacks, you will be amazed at the things vinegar can do as a cleaner.

Is fabric softener a big “NO” for down comforters?

Any idea why my down comforter pokes and pick me while using it? Perhaps the thread count? Any other reasons?
Might be that there is too many feathers rather than down in the comforter.
My comforter says to wash it but not to dry it! Will it be okay if I just hang to dry over a rail in my house?
We think this would be fine, however you may find the down clusters sticking together. You should be able to shake them apart after it is dry. Drying in a Drier mitigates this from happening. If the shell is cotton, we think you should be fine to dry it in a Drier, please don't blame us if something goes wrong. Just be careful not to over dry it on high heat. Can you use a little bluing in the rinse?
Were not 100% sure, but we know it works well on bed linens.
VeroLinens I ended up using mrs Stewart’s bluing and all is well.
What temp should I be washing ?
Ideally warm. I use hot along with bleach as I want to kill the dust mites.
What about putting the goose down comforter out to dry outside in the sun after washing it?

Can I use open front home washers?
The problem with washers and driers that you use at home is - they are typically smaller in size than ones generally found in a laundromat. You can try, but as we note in this video - your drier is likely 1/2 the size of one found in a laundromat. This makes the drying process much longer and you run the risk of scorching the comforter shell. What about organic dry clean that doesnt use perc?

What do you recommend for getting cat pee smell out of the laundry?

What temp?
Well, heat is always a contributor to cotton wearing out faster. But considering that you are likely only cleaning your comforter once a year or so, we don't think hot water will cause you any issue.
