UPDATE JUN 24, 2019. For some reason HP is not sending smc.bin files anymore. So the only choice is replacement of BIOS chip. You have to either reprogram existing chip or buy a new one one. END OF UPDATE
It works for HP business laptops EliteBooks and ProBooks only!
For a commercial/business class product and you need to contact HP Business support team. Please submit UUID and Serial Number and they will be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file and instructions which you can use to reset the password. Note that assistance for such issues is usually free of charge for HP business class computers.
Once you receive the SMC.bin file, here are the necessary instructions you need to follow
Please make sure USB pendrive is formatted to FAT32 (not NTFS, not else)
Follow these steps to clear an unknown password for the BIOS administrator:
1. Save the attached SMC.BIN file to a blank USB pendrive.
2. Shut down the notebook. Insert the USB pendrive into any USB port. (If this notebook has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, use a USB 2.0 port.)
Pay attention that file name and extension ALL CAPITAL LETTERS!
3. Press and hold the following three keys at the same time:
the Windows key (near alt) , the Up-Arrow key, and the Down-Arrow key
4. Click one and release the power button
You will understand it worked
5. Once you see a grey "SMC Command" screen, release the three keys mentioned in step 3.
(Note: Steps 3, 4, and 5 signal the BIOS of this notebook to examine the USB ports and the HP_TOOLS partition for an SMC.bin file, and if it detects one, to run its command. This SMC.bin file contains the command to allow access into the BIOS as a BIOS administrator without supplying a password.)
You should see something on your screen
6. Read the grey screen about "SMC Command":
6a. If you see a message "SMC Command failure", contact HP support and attach photo of the F1 System Information
screen.
6b. On the other hand, if you see no "SMC Command" message of any sort, try steps 3, 4, and 5 again. You may also use a different brand and smaller capacity USB key. If that does not succeed, contact HP support. Pay attention to step 3 - press and hold the 3+1 button at the same time or very very fast one after another.
6c. If you see a message "SMC Command success", then the command has worked. Follow the on-screen instructions and restart the device. Begin tapping the F10 key (or the Esc key) like tap-tap-tap during start, so that the machine will go into the BIOS setup screen. (For this boot only, the machine should let you enter Setup without having to supply an administrator password. If the unit is restarted without performing the next step, the process will need to be ran again).
7. From the File screen in the BIOS, highlight and select the option to "Reset BIOS Security to factory defaults". (This will clear the old unknown password.) Follow the prompts, and restart the notebook when prompted. Reminder: if this notebook uses
BitLocker full disk encryption software, please choose to NOT reset the TPM! If it does not use BitLocker, you can also clear the TPM.
8. If you wish to set a new administrator BIOS password, you may do so on a future boot cycle by pressing F10 and setting a fresh BIOS admin password within the BIOS setup screen.
If there is any difficulty, particularly at steps 6a or 6b, contact HP support
for anyone asking for the file, you can't use the same as he did, those file are generated by HP their require the serial of the unit and the UUID, then HP generate the file and send it to you. there no other way to get those except from contacting HP support and talk to a L2
Since my modell was not included, I had to use Option 5 (Shotgun) twice (as mentioned) to reset the Admin-Bios-PW to "nothing". After that I could choose Hybrid-UEFI (WITH CSM) and could install W7 fresh and clean without all that HP dumbness :D Thanks a million times :)
💀 There is ANOTHER way if You are lucky. It's the same process as in the video. This method worked for Me on My second-hand HP Zbook 17 when the seller was taking too long to reply with their BIOS password.
The trick is;
Boot up the PC and immediately start pressing f10 to try to access the BIOS. ENTER THE BIOS AS A GUEST (I don't know if this option is available to everyone, which is where the luck comes in). This will allow access to the BIOS settings without the need for the user BIOS password or the administrator password.
Once You are in the BIOS, select the RESTORE TO FACTORY DEFAULTS option and then select the Save and Exit option. Reboot the system (or it will reboot itself) and allow any reset actions to go through (including the fingerprint record if necessary).
That's it. Good luck. 💀
To see guest access to BIOS you have to be really lucky. To be able to reset the administrative BIOS password using guest access you have to be extremely lucky. It's like walking into Walmart and meeting the Unicorn. And while you trying to recover from a shock. Unicorn is giving you ONE HUNDRED MILLION dollars check. Saying -'Here you go, Sir. Now you can buy whatever laptop you like.'

I've got HP Probook 4530s. Same problem as everyone else. HDD failed. Couldn't get past BIOS. Tried HP Customer Support. No help at all and no longer giving out SMC.BIN. Suggested i get new motherboard. Finally saw this post and decided to give it a try. Kept tapping F10 after powering on and it worked. Was able to enter BIOS as a guest and restored BIOS to factory settings. Thanks Jack.
Unfortunately, I've heard that HP no longer offers this. I have an Elitebook that actually works, as long as you install Windows on it, but since I can't get into the BIOS setup, (F10 key), I can't install Linux on it, which would improve its performance. I found my Elitebook in the trash at a carwash. The hard drive had been taken out, but I was able to install a new one, and put Windows 10 on it, even without access to the BIOS setup. I know this video is 5 years old, and you probably don't have that file anymore, but if you do, I would LOVE to have it emailed to me, if we can get in contact on a more private setting, I'll give you my email address

for those who still have this issue--could not get rid of the bios ADMIN password but I installed HP protect tools security manager sp74101--configured my windows password--rebooted f10 and bammm--user bios password (use your windows login password) your in!! can do all things you need too---hopes this helps everybody

I bought a used Elitebook that booted to Win 7 but was password locked out of the BIOS, I went about upgrading the drivers on the HP support and I noticed a BIOS upgrade so it downloaded it too, I went about upgrading the BIOS even though it was password locked and to my surprise after i did the BIOS upgrade and saving the changes to it the password lock was gone, I had full access to the BIOS.

@@andrewmckee7661 if you can convince HP to send it to you, yes, you need 50 different files. But with current state of HP policy concerning BIOS lock passwords, I'd say you need 50 new BIOS chips.

Simon Hoskin blank chip requires programming. But you can buy preprogrammed chips for almost any HP model on eBay. Just search for “bios chip hp”. It’s around $15-$30. With a new chip in hands almost any pc/smartphone repair shop can do the job.
i cloned the hard drive from my main pc using AOME backupper then installed the 250 ssd into a zbook 17 g2 and windows 10 reconfirged itself and worked although i still do not have access to bios cause the owner forgot it the machine is running fine
I spoke to HP and they would not give me and SMC.bin file. They said my only option was replacement motherboards. I have at least four machines like this. Will cost too much to replace all the boards.

Just successfully reset my HP EliteBook 840 G1 bios administrator password after extensive research, HP customer support sent me the SMC.bin file - but it MUST BE RENAMED as SMC.BIN despite what is sent to you! Otherwise you will not see anything when trying the key combo. Hope this helps

Just replace a hard drive. Drive lock passwords can not be recovered at all. At least try to reset BIOS password while hard drive is disconnected and see if you can enter the BIOS
Thanks thats a good idea to access bios wiith hdd removed. HP said the smc file is only valid for 1 week and after i must get a new file if I haven't got in.
Or you can change the date back. Assuming you can boot your laptop into whatever operating system to change the current date

What I knew is that the file is unique to each laptop(as claimed by HP support) and you'll need to provide your proof of purchase for them to send you this file.
So yeah this is kinda pointless. And feel free to proof me wrong, I'm more than happy to know there is way to bypass this BIOS password without having the keep on begging the customer to help me HELP themselves by looking for the invoice when they dont even remember the damn password.

I called HP and also contact them by chat and they wont send me the file... they said that the use to do that but not anymore that i have to change my motherboard :S I even ask them so i cant format my pc just because a password on MY BIOS!? Every smc.bin is unique for the laptop and issue date. My file will not help you. You have to replace bios chip physically.

You have to change bios chip. You don't need a new motherboard
@@artemvi yeah just seen the vid on that one only getting the right tools for the job is expensive in my country and getting someone else to do it is even more , around 700 for hp laptop so its actually cheaper for me to dump and buy another exactly the same but unlocked . the heat gun plus screw drivers i have , i don't have the chip reprogramming equipment

They stopped it for 2 years, so I ask them then what is the solution? They said that you need to change the motherboard.
