How to unbrick or reset the BIOS password on nearly any modern laptop with a Raspberry Pi

- If you have a laptop that was bricked from a bad BIOS update or that has a power-on or setup password, or you want to install Coreboot/Libreboot, this method will help get you back in action. This works with Dell, HP Elitebook, Lenovo, and more laptops!

Some laptops use 8 pins, others 16. Double check before you order unless you're getting two to cover your bases.

Here's a reminder: If you want to remove the BIOS password it's a better idea to make a dump of it instead of flashing a random dump, as random dumps can cause issues with Intel ME and whatnot. With Dell laptops, there's usually password crackers available.
This will also NOT work on ThinkPads, if you want to clear the password you can just do the EEPROM trick for older models (t430/420, old IBM era models, etc.). If you want to unbrick it you need a "clean" BIOS dump without a serial number of another Thinkpad.

removing the hard drive from the laptop and plugging it into a workstation could allow for either running the drive, assuming it's linux or with a lot of workaround windows, or looking at the drive's contents assuming it's not encrypted. This is a useful guide for stopping common thieves from accessing the computer's cache and resources, but will not stop anyone who knows what they're doing. Thanks nonetheless for sharing this useful information. By the way, the laptop itself isn't bricked, simply because it stills functions properly.
This is more for those situations when a machine has been bricked due to a bios update/install failure or has been excessively locked down with no bios password available. Typically ex-corporate network-boot only machines that were fire-sold as spares for a fraction of their value instead of being properly decommissioned and sold as usable machines. Happens surprisingly often when a company flops suddenly as their kit often turns up in bulk at auction. If the bios is operational and you just want an OS to run on it your method is just fine for casual users. Unlocking the bios this way is a final option if all else fails and the alternative is either soldering on a purchased fresh bios flash chip or going hard-mode with removing, reprogramming and resoldering the existing chip. There's a point where your time spent is more valuable than the hardware your reviving, unless your doing it for fun.
yes, worked, thanks. althou not at first. had to power on the laptop, then unplug it, then immediately hit program on the pi. . also the two remaning blank pins needed to be connected to 3.3V with a 1~kilo ohm resistor

A video showing how to flash using a Linux installed OS or live Linux USB drive and USB flash tools would be interesting as it avoids buying a Pi hence is less expensive for one job.
The bios lock may have been resolved but did you check to see in bios setup that your serial number, UUID, MAC address, product name etc. match what is shown on the bottom of your notebook? I bet they don't match and it looks like there is a problem with the ME also.

Here's a trivial observation that may help you in a very small way. It only takes 2 sha256sum matches to know it's read the chip without corruption. If you already know that, or i've missed some detail, my apologies.
Unbricking this way actually tends to work on desktops too, if you broke the BIOS somehow.

Man, I followed your tutorial to a Tee, and everything worked fine... but the laptop refuses to boot with the BIOS chip reinserted. In fact, it behaves the same way it does as if there were no BIOS chip in whatsoever. Might you know what I'm doing wrong? It's a probook 640 g2 btw.
Flash the old backup and try modifying the image. This doesn't work on newer laptops.

I definitely OWN MY few yrs old laptop and stored it for a bit and although im pretty sure its correct apparently I forgot and tech support was no help I tried everything and all is outdated like shorting the eeprom which did not work I need my laptop back! Power on/supervisor pw same but only get 3tries and no bios at all..

I used a Raspbery Pi 4 , I left the pins 3 and 7 not used and then when i run the command to read the flash I added another params "spispeed=512"

IF you get an error like "flashrom Error: Image size doesn't match the flash chip's size" when you try to write on flash THEN you must have a bad bios file
when you buy a new BIOS CHIP, does it come empty or it already had the appropriate bios on it? mine is 8470p and it has 16 pins chip, so i will have to replace it.
If you have not beeen told , the chip will come empty unless you can find a seller that has the pre programmed

@@mihaithemystic2890 you could download and extract a fresh hp bin file from the provided bios file from hp then use a 16 pin flasher with 16 pin clip (which is not expensive) then use that to flash/write a fresh bios if the chip is empty... there are tutorials on how to remove password with flasher for elitebooks and it does in fact work... just instead of “reading” the files from the old chip you are simply “writing” the fresh one

Ch341 only works on 5v chips this chips requires 3.3v and newer chip only requires 1.8v, so yeah you burned your chip by supplying 5v on it

Hi, I have the Rasberry Pi 3b+, the github guide states that one should start counting from the right and leave 14 pins. I am really not sure what this means, I checked the pin layout on the Pi3b+ it should be the same as the Pi3? Flashrom does not pick up any EEPROM, any advice on this?

I tried to contact to the HP support and they don't provide the SMC.bin anymore, this is a bullshit about them.
I tried with the HPBR tool, too, however, this for a some weird reason it doesn't work for me, there is another solution?

no it will not work it is stored in serial eeprom you will have to locate the eeprom

@@pawsinmyface4560 I've heard a dedicated flasher like the CH341A is actually a lot more reliable. If you go into the #coreboot irc on Freenode it's one of the flashers they recommend. You really shouldn't dismiss it.

If you have a desktop PC that has a password locked bios, jumping the RESET CMOS pins on its motherboard should do the trick, also pulling out the CMOS battery for a minute or so can also do the trick.
