I just had a conversation (short one) with someone claiming the ten commandments 'have' to be followed, and the fact that we haven't is why the world is so screwed up. I asked how any one of them would be needed if we just did the 'one' thing that Yeshua told us to do. No answer. End of convo. Because what He told us to do covers every issue the world over. He made it so simple for us that no other 'command' is needed... and yet... here we are.
Thank you for your courage, brother.

Thank you John. I believe this is truly the core teachings of Christ is just be kind to one another. Unfortunately this core teaching is lost over the adulterations of leaders for their agendas. I’m a devout Buddhist but I believe in Jesus and his teachings. I take all the goodness of other religions and apply it to my life. There are always lessons for us to learn from. Those that think their beliefs is infallible and exclude themselves will only live in fear and in an echo chamber. In the end most religions boils down to have compassion, do good, and let go of evil. Do these and you will have a peaceful and abundant life. John, I enjoy your videos because you speak from direct experience and not hearsay.

Thank you for this message. It reminds me of a sermon by Andy Stanley where he said (I’m paraphrasing) that as Christians we believe what we believe because Jesus died and was resurrected, not because of the documentation about it. His actual life is what guides us. His compelling love calls to us.
Using the Bible to spread hate and judgement is not of Christ.
I get why it happens though. People are fearful of getting it wrong, of following false teachers. And so they rest their full trust on a book, and they need that book to be perfect and immutable. They forget that God created us. They forget that as his creation we know his voice.
You cannot substitute your discernment with a book. And I say this with deep respect for the Bible.

Awesome Video and great points, John. To my understanding, The Council of Nicea had next to nothing to do with which books were considered inspired and which were not. Maybe there were a few comments here and there, but for the most part just about every Bishop who attended that council attended it for a different reason. Their conversation was in what way was Jesus Christ God?
Love your channels and videos. Your voice relaxes me and I love your humble wisdom. :)

Greetings John. I recently had a very interesting experience with a "prophetess" of the evangelical persuasion, this person is on CZcams all the time proclaiming "a word from the Lord." IMO she is promoting a very fear based view, namely that we are in a "spiritual war" and the devil is everywhere trying to wreck our faith. I felt led to have her read Numbers 22, the story of Balaam the false prophet, who monetized his spiritual gift and became corrupted. I believe the Holy Spirit directed me in this, all i did was tell her i believed God wanted her to read this, that's all i said. Of course i wasn't expecting a warm reaction, but the vitriol that came out surprised me, she literally called me "pure evil." Now as far as i am concerned her reaction speaks volumes, TRIGGERED is the word that comes to mind. She not only failed to address her comments to me first (the proper biblical way) but called me this publicly with no chance given for a dialogue about why i believed i was led to do this. I was wondering if you had seen this too with the fundamentalists or is it just me? Thanks for all you do!
BTW you basically answered my question, i wrote it before the video was done. Thanks John you are beautiful!

Before the video gets going I wonder if I can put forward a good guess. Because the god in the Bible is a god that love’s conditionally and if you don’t have fear of him you don’t really love him (so I’ve been told anyway). As if fear keeps people honest and good. Those with your best interest in mind don’t want you to be in fear. As long as there’s fear, something’s wrong.
    Let’s see how I did.

I totally agree with you on this as well! It’s so tough to talk to many Christians I love them so much and it really does eventually come down to them not fully relying on the voice of the Holy Spirit in them and too much on scriptures to explain God to them. I homeschool my 3 kids and we attend a Christian co-op I was kicked out of one for just mentioning how useful ACIM was to me. It’s very tough at times and now o try my best to speak their language while on the side of truth.

Love your videos, John! So insightful and the information really resonates with what I've always felt deep inside. Question for you: where did you find the translation for satan = temptation? I was trying to research it online but I didn't know where to look. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

    • @therecoveringcatholic
      @therecoveringcatholic  Před 9 měsíci +3

Here is one I could remember but there are many that are clearer in the interpretation: Matthew 4:3 says this about Christ’s temptation in the wilderness, “The tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.’” Satan is a tempter by nature. He tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit in the garden (Gen 3). He tempted Christ to not obey God’s will in the wilderness (Matt 4). He tempted Judas to deny Christ (Lk 22:3) and Ananias to lie about the amount of money he gained from selling his land (Acts 5:3). He tempts husbands and wives to be unfaithful in marriage (1 Cor 7:5). He tempts the nations to rebel against Christ (Rev 20:7-8). Satan is a tempter

In terms of the question of infallibility, the answer is (if you make such a claim) that the infallible books are the original manuscripts. The edits that may be in them are human error and do not change the meaning (more like correcting spelling errors and improving grammar and syntax to better carry the message). The oldest book of the Bible we have is a copy of Isaiah that is 2700 years old. It could even be the original book. And compared to the copies we have from 2000 years ago and 800 years ago and today, that book is 99% the same as the newer copies. The differences that do exist don’t change the meaning of what’s in the book (“a” instead of “one” type changes).
My argument against Christianity or Catholicism has never been that the Bible isn’t infallible. My argument is that if you take the Bible as infallible you do NOT come away with modern Christianity or Catholicism. What’s in that book is nothing like what institutionalized Christianity looks like at all. Or even Judaism.
Also, if you read some of the more head-scratching passages with an esoteric lens, or if you consider the possibility that Jesus saw himself as Dual instead of in Union - meaning his comments to the god of Israel were said from his earthly perspective, not his heavenly one. But that the “Our Father” was for the TRUE source - you start to see that the Bible is both highly reliable at least, AND that our institutional understanding of it is totally wrong.
Even medieval Christians - what navy would argue as the height of Christianity- were much more pagan and magical and esoteric. Magic itself was a mainline and totally valid part of Christianity until about 700-800 years ago when the papacy outlawed it. So their understanding of the Bible was far different from ours, despite being worded essentially the same as it is in modern translations - and no one for over 50% of the church’s life had any issues with it.

The Spanish inquisition was actually a reaction to the betrayal by the Spanish Jews to the invading Muslims that led to 750 of Islamic domination in Spain. The Jews provided aid and support to the invaders and then after the end of Al-Andalusia "converted" to Catholicism to try to evade the political consequences. This is why the primary activity of the inquisitors was in Granada to closest point to facilitate a future Moorish invasion.
Catholic records during the time show that the inquisition was actually quite tolerant of weak faith, agnosticism or even what could be considered blasphemous. It was a political event more than anything.
Furthermore for the times the Spanish inquisition was actually quite mild. The persecuted Jews initially fled to Portugal and were at first welcomed. However, 100 years later after they were massacred, they actually fled BACK to Spain. Not trying to be a know at all or argumentative just provide some much needed historical context as these are much more complex subjects than the way they are often discussed in public forums.
