Couple of things...water pump to block gaskets were good about leaking on those, and your side bearing races are supposed to float because behind the seals are side bearing preload adjusters which are threaded...great video tho!
I’m suspecting the water pump but the weird thing is I haven’t been losing any coolant.. Also that makes sense with the floating carrier races, its basically the same thing as a rear end. Luckily the backlash was good so I didn’t need to move the adjusters after glueing them in😂
@@lsxmatt i had that same problem with water pump. thing is it was a bear to track down as it was one of those times where it only leaked when it was running with a small weep. Once the engine was off it stopped, made it hard to track. I just replaced the dang thing lol. Problem solved. Hated to spend the money really but I hate chasing tail on leaks. Also love the bird you got there. I miss my 79 Formula badly.
Exactly, the water pumps leak at the gasket area, nearly always the driver side since its harder to see to know where its coming from. I have maintained several of these generation trucks and probably had to do the water pump 3 times on one of them because the block is not flat. Its pretty common to have that leak and not know it.
I have the same problem with my 05 Denali.. I tried replacing the wheel bearing but that didn't fix it. I'm 100% positive it's the inner axle Bering.

The Harbor Freight jack stands were recalled AFTER I was done lying under them for a week.. Expect Part 2 by Friday the latest! Also check the description for links to the parts I used as well as the video I referenced for teardown.

@@bntrouble31 I have Avalanche and Tahoe on Harbor Freight jacks stands now (6-ton - not recoll). I put 3rd old jack (from Lows) next to the Harbor Freight jack stand -just in case.
You know you should always use something more than just jacks that’s scary, I did hear it glad you found the problem and you weren’t hurt

I installed them on my 04 Silverado, they work great, and its accurate.
Hey Matt, when you have loose bearing races like that, you can take a pin punch at an angle and upset the aluminum in a few spots in the bore to tighten it up. Adding the compound after that is even better.
laiky71 I was thinking the same thing. Dimpling is what we do when trailer axles and bearings don’t jive anymore.

This video was very helpful. I just was given a 2002 Denali that i picked up and drove from PO to AZ and noticed the same type of noise then discovered the same type of fluid discolor in diff along with pieces, so thank you for posting this video. I will most likely be tearing into mine soon.

So the passenger side axle shaft DOES NOT pop out like that, only the smaller drivers side. You must of broke the inner snap ring for it to of come out like that. In order to get the passenger side axle out. You unbolt the whole side piece from the housing and take the snap ring off the inside. Then it comes right apart. Also the races do NOT take any retaining compound. They are supposed the spin like that. If they didnt, you wouldn't be able to adjust the backlash.
Yea the backlash thing makes perfect sense, completely went over my head. I’ve done quiet of few rears so I don’t know how I missed that. For the axle I re-assembled it the correct way. Nothing broke, the thrust washer just got a little bent. I address everything in the next video.

Matt, I enjoy all of your videos but the the ones on your Tahoe have been extremely useful while making repairs on my 2006 Suburban with the 5.3 Flex Fuel engine. I have a lifter tick that I am almost positive is from the number 1 cylinder. It seems that a very common cause of this is the o-ring on the end of the oil pick up tube you just exposed in the video of removing the front diff. Apparently it cracks or breaks and reduces oil pressure just enough to slightly starve the number cylinder lifter, thus causing the ticking noise. My oil pressure has gone from always showing 40+ psi to about 25 until really warmed up and eventually gets to 40 psi. I have 196,000 + miles on the motor and do not have the active fuel management valves that everyone eventually changes or eliminates. Here is my problem,.. I'm too old to jack up the truck and drop the oil pan to change this so I have to pay to have it done. That's hard to admit but it is what it is. My long winded question to you or others is this,.. Does it make sense to go into a shop and ask them to do just that, drop the pan and change the o-ring? I would appreciate any suggestions. By the way, I'm not trying to be cheap, but this truck has been mine since new, and meticulously cared for and serviced. It runs like new other than this issue.
I have that same sound in my 05 and right around 52mph I get a vibration but it clears up if I go faster or slower than that.
I hope you replaced the pick up tube o-ring, common slow or low pressure oil issue with high milage Tahoe. Had to do mine a couple months ago
Unfortunately I didn’t. The pump has to come off whenever I decide to do the cam, so I’ll just have to take care of it then!

Shit like this makes me glad I don’t have four wheel drive. More shit to wear out. Most people never engage 4 Wheel Dr. more than a couple of times. Having Positrac or limited slip rear end is usually good enough. I use bags filled with lead shot to put in the rear of my 2 Wheel Dr. pick up in winter.

@14:20 lol that’s what I hate about some of those air tools, there’s no easing into anything it’s just nothing or full noise 😂🤷🏼♂️
IMPORTANT-- when popping out axles that snap in, pry on both sides evenly. I am 300 lbs I can force it enough to bend tools, but both sides evenly, will pop out easily with no sweat.

What exactly does a bad front diff sound like? Lots of road noise? Does the sound go on and off as you go in and out of 4WD?
wow! I thought that when the truck was in 2hi the front diff was totally out of the equation because the hubs or half axles were not engaged.
I believe the carrier still spins just the axles aren’t locked.

Did you change the O ring on the pick up? They crack alot of times, messing with your oil pressure.
Need your help Matt. Ive got an 220k mile '04 Z71 Suburban that doesn't show these issues. I bought it at 170k and the prior original owners didnt know if the fluids in the diffs have ever been changed. I cant get a straight answer on if I should go ahead and change out the fluid or at this point leave it alone. What should I do? If I do need to change the gear oil, I plan on using Redline. Also I know the trans fluid was changed at 160k, would it be ok to use redline oil in that as well? They are all original as far as I know.
Ive only rebuilt the escalade and SS Silverado front diff's that are for AWD. And those have adjusters with locks that are used to set the backlash... and that same bearing always fails inside because the locks are not peend down tight enough from the factory which a allows the adjusters to loosen up and causes the diff to bind and make snapping noises and all kinds of havoc. Except the actuator set up on that diff your working on they look the same. So their isnt any adjusters in that diff for the backlash ???.
Yea it has adjusters. Mine didn’t move so I left the preload alone. I check the backlash in the next video.
U can send ur old tools back to Milwaukee and they will rebuild them
Hopefully you swapped the oil pump pickup tube o ring when you were in there lol. Suck not too and 10000 miles later have to pull the diff and pan to do it.

I have a 2005 hummer h2. I was thinking if it was possible putting a front diff locker since the back already had one.
even though I love GM the front aluminium diff that is bolted together is the weak link. With a locker it is possible to break that thing in two.
put it in 2WD high and problem solved!

Yes you can put in the captions chairs and also add the 3rd row. 2nd should bolt right in, the rears you'll need the brackets and bolts from the junkyard (way cheaper) and cut some holes I the carpet so the seats can latch on to the bracket. Did the 3rd row in my 01 tahoe.
My 04 tahoe lt has 220000 miles no problems yet but my seats don’t look near as nice as yours

I'm replacing the engine on my 1500 Avalanche 2002 NF. Donor is Tahoe 2003.
I'm stoke with oil pressure sensor. 2003 Tahoe has small sensor with 3 contacts. 2002 Avalanche hase 3.5 " toll sensor with 1 contact. I don't have tool to remove this sensor.
Block to waterpump gaskets..notorious for failing. Most likely the cause..these trucks and Tahoes are money pits...my 04 ,owned it for 8 yrs and have addressed i think everything..but rear end is now on the list.since trans has been rebuilt, it now has a clunk in rear end. Presume play..so over the gm bullshit quality. My 97 was so much better built.. Such a long laundry list for these vehicles. Window regulators, Exterior door handles, Speakers, Lee Spring brackets, Door jamb switches, Transmission , Hub bearing assemblies, Power steering play in in the gear box, Heater core hose fitting, Faulty grounds at the ECU and back of black,and more...
I had my differential rebuilt 2-3 months ago cause it was making a clicking noise every time you let go off the gas under 35 mph. It cost me about $1K. Not gonna lie, that hurt like a mother fucker.
