- An #MRE #cake that can feed 18?! Looks like it. In truth, it's a UGR, a Unitized Group Ration designed much like a Meal-Ready-to-Eat but in amounts to feed groups of 50 officers. Thanks to Bob over at MRENation, I'm going to taste the yellow cake with chocolate frosting and the carrot cake with vanilla frosting. 🎂

I was a cook in the Marines. A few tips, 1) heat the icing In warm water if you can. Which we had on standbye for the food we heated. 2) you were right. A smaller hole made it pipe-able. We made like a drizzle. And wrote funny stuff on them. 3) cut before you ice. Makes it easier and more presentable to serve. I miss the yellow cakes, try the tres leches and red velvet if you can!!
I'm sorry if I'm off topic but that tree behind you to the right is intensely beautiful. The way the light was playing off the leaves with the reds, yellows. oranges and greens, and in such a angular/diagonal way is mesmerizing.

Pops brought a few tray packs home with him when he cam out of the field. Back then they were packed in metal cans and I used my P-38 to open them. One was chicken breast in gravy one was white rice one was a cake and one was a tray of cherries to top the cake with.

If you saved a chocolate bar from an MRE earlier in the day you could melt it and use that for frosting. But I'd be so glad to see any kind of cake while I was out in the field, I wouldn't even care.
I don't remember EVER seeing these out in the field! One time, some buddy's family were able to ship a bunch of Mrs. Field's cookies to us. Best week ever!

I love her channel. I like that other women are reviewing MREs on YT because I have found that there are only a few of us, so far, and I have a hard time finding new Subs because mostly MRE channels are guys. And I watch all the guys channels! They inspired me, but so did Emmy.

The small squad made it back to the Platoon's-quarters, where everyone takes a moment of silence for Davis, before digging in. Davis, was captured, and made to clean the kitchen for the next week. He had no regrets.

On a school field trip, we visited some sort of military base. After the tour, they had these big slices of sheet yellow cake with chocolate frosting. In my young mind it was one of the best cakes I ever had. Most likely made in their gally.

Seeing the hen prance about in the background like she owned the place made me smile and reminded me of the chickens we had growing up -- they weren't cooped (though they had a place to go to at night) and basically roamed about the yard, pecking and what not. We fed them kitchen scraps (to them as well as to the goat, ducks, geese, turkeys, and occasional foster sheep) and supplemented with some chicken feed we'd scatter on the ground, but the hens - and rooster - certainly found their own snacks besides. My sister knew where they hid their eggs (or where most of them hid the eggs ... because once in a while there'd be a happy mama hen appearing 'in public' with a bunch of cheep-cheep chicks running about her legs). The life you give this hens is fantastic and the way it ought to be! Also, happy chickens make for VERY yummy eggs.

Imagine Emmy cooking for our service people. Even if it tastes awful she would make sure it looked pretty and present it to you in a way that you would think it's the greatest thing ever. Food doesn't have to be just shoveled into your face hole it can also be appreciated. That kind of passion for something so everyday is inspiring.

My cooks made a birthday cake for me out of that, and for frosting they used the T-ration pudding. Was the best birthday ever!

About 20 years ago while cleaning out some our unit storage we found an old T-rat that was at the time 20+years old. It was a toffee cake, no icing, and in tin packaging that was far harder to open unless you had the proper tools. A P-38 or a P-51 can opener.

When you said you were in your backyard my first thought was "I want to see the chickens" was so happy when they dropped in to say hello
Brings back memories of many field exercises back in the Army. The only time I ate this in combat was the Panama Invasion of 1989-90. The last time eating this was a field exercises before deployment to Iraq in 2006. Once in theatre in Kuwait everything was real cakes made at the mess halls with the once in a while MRE at the firing ranges over night before "Going North". Once you finished training and over the border into Iraq. Everything was real food even in a combat zone. During patrols and combat operations we had emergency MREs in our assault packs. Yes these UGR packs were either a blessing or a curse during training exercises.
Watching this at 2:30 am while I feed my newborn... And I just got the most intense craving for 🍰 cake. Lol

Oh, I remember this. During YTC, we would get this stuff from the field kitchen along with other stuff like eggs, sausage, and gravy. didn't know it at the time but when I was pulling KP duty at where headquarters is set up, all the food that the field kitchen cooked was powdered eggs and shelf stable sausage and sausage gravy. Stuff was vacuum sealed so that it was anaerobic and could last a decade at least. That explained par of the disgust that the cooks have for army food.
