The existing widescreen patch for this game was just a fake cropped up and down from 4:3 ratio. Finally, in 2020 Verok released this great patch and I was found this in 2021.
This patch is really great. By simply copying the PU patch to the PU folder, you can fully enjoy this game without any problems (all Glide graphic effects, widescreen, bug fixes, ETC) / posts
Anyway, This masterpiece game has not been (almost) erased from my hard drive in 22 years, and I can feel the happiness and excitement of the time just by having this game installed on my PC.
I always wanted to play this game with steering wheel when I was a kid, and I've always wanted to play it on a 'real' widescreen. Finally my dream came true. 😊

NFS Porsche had hands down the best physics out of the whole franchise
Together with the psx version of high stakes. It actually uses the engine of it.
It's mindblowing how good they are. It really feels like driving a rear engine car. The 930 Turbo really is a widowmaker in that game, as it should be, etc.

Not from the whole franchise, but from the EA Canada era, i think NFS Shift 1 and 2 have better simcade physics.

I have been playing NFS Porsche Unleashed for more than 20 years and last year I acquired a cheap sim-racing setup. Nothing fancy, but I was keen on trying it out on my favourite NFS. Man, it feels actually pretty decent to drive with a proper wheel. It was indeed very ahead of its time.

My favorite nfs game, there is nothing like these maps in any other racing game, the scenery and the sounds are unmatched. Thank you for the guide, i was trying so hard to get my wheel working with it

for me too. this and the motor city online was the #1 nfs games. too bad ea forced to stay on the arcade line after these games.
I think this was the best NFS game ever. I played this so much.

Thank you so much for detailed description! I spent few days to find the problem and the solution was with multiple devices, that connected to the USB hub. Any who has that issue, when your pedals / wheel doesn't work in race, just unplug something from the usb port. Thank you!!!
PS. My favorite racing game. The most natural feeling of driving.

88 cars max to possess, Normandie bug that kicked me out into windows. (Hint: Had a crash into windows in Normandie at the same left-hand bend over and over again. I tried kinda anything, until i bought all standard car pieces of my 356 back into my inventory and i could pass that curve... .)
Played this game back and fourth. And no other Need for Speed was this great to me. ❤🔥
if you ever decide to play it again, the Normandie crash can be cured by replacing the skybox with, for example, the one from Corsica
The bug is in the skybox .bin file. Fix: go to "...\GameData\Track\Sky\", backup the file "farmland.bin" into another name and/or location. Then replace it with a copy of another track sky's .bin. For example, rename "farmland.bin" to "farmland.bin.bak", then duplicate "Forest.bin" and rename the copy as "farmland.bin".
This is simply amazing. I love the classic NFS games. This setup is a dream come true indeed, you got a new sub :)

I remember playing this with a wheel back in the day, absolute blast. I don't know why that's so hard to get right these days.
Unfortunately, I was very poor so I can't enjoy this game with racing wheel, but just with keyboard at the time.(about 2002?) I remember the day that when I got a first racing wheel on 2009 and enjoy the NFS PU. I really amazed that how good FFB on this game. :))
I couldn't afford one either, luckily a neighbor of mine had one, at home I played with the keyboard and mouse (still do). It plays great with the keyboard as well, it really feels like EA skipped no expense with the PC version of this game back in the day. Guess they really wanted that exclusivity contract with Porsche.

Nice! Are there only certain steering wheels that will work with this game? I assume you can’t use a super modern steering wheel? I grew up playing this with a keyboard and thought it was super fun, but after watching this I feel like I probably missed out on how the game was meant to be experienced… would be cool to try it out.
I had leave a link in description about wheel support for NFS5. I'm not sure this method is working correctly for super modern wheels, but it is worth to try.

How did you get your engine sound to sound proper? Mine sounds goofy so very unrealistic. When I bought the game when it was released, I was so impressed with how the 911 sounded and handled just like my real 911.
Hmm, I haven't set any sound options.

Hello Leza, I wanted to ask you a question:
How did you get the game to load a race with the steering wheel set as the controller? Every time I've tried to play this with either a G29 or a T300, it crashes as soon as the race is about to load.
1. You should try to use Verok's patch on the description link. This patch is solve many bugs on modern pc.
2. community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/58-microsoft-directinput-mapper/
PU is have problem of cannot use X-input controller properly. So try this d-input mapper then you can use your steering wheel for many old racing games.
With this mapper, I could use my CSR wheel on NASCAR3, Midtown Madness, etc.
3. PU is recognize only 2 controllers at ther same time, so disconnect unused controller before start the game.

having the exact same issue, Leza replied to you, posting a link to MS DInput Mapper but he also posted another troubleshooting solution 6 months ago about disabling USB devices in device manager. Will try with mapper first.

@@daniil_davydov1999 Yes. Disconnect the unnecessary usb device as much as possible. (USB hub, USB sound card, USB CDrom, USB bluetooth receiver, etc..)

and what has the best quality gfx? the best settings to use? nglide, glide3x, opengl 1, opengl 3, dx7?? any pros and cons?? performance shouldnt be of concern by now, only best graphics.
opengl is best. This game is designed for best quality and performance on 3dfx glide graphics cards. Mr Verok has done all this and 'real' widescreen in opengl.

Don't worry. there is no malware on his works. It is very common for antivirus to misdiagnose personal work as a virus.

My CSR wheel can use on most old racing games with this mapper.(nascar racing 3, midtown madness etc). But, most old racing games dont recognize multidevice, And NFS5 is can use 2 controller maximum. (But I recommend to use only one controller)
If you do key mapping on nfs5 with more than 3 controllers connected, all axes will not work.
If the mapper doesn't working, here is another solution github.com/elishacloud/dinputto8/releases
The biggest problem with NFS5 is that it lists all usb devices in the controller list in-game option, which seems to be causing the problem. In my case, the usb sound card was interfering with the controller recognition. (In my memory, there is no problem until Win7)
The nfs5 hard to use wheel than nfs3,4. Ironic
And USB hub and any USB devices connected to the hub will huge interfere of wheelbase recognition. Before setting the wheel, disconnect all USB hub devices except the wheelbase.

Did you mean when you used the tools by Verok? You should use the 'config.exe' file of Verok's always when you start the game.
