Watching this with you guys was very entertaining.
Lighthammer66 fuck yeah dude, thanks for hangin out!
Could the MMM be “Big Trouble in Little China” I mean JACK BURTON is a slept on legend. 🙏
andrewjacksonbr oh I think that’d be great, I doubt Scott or Lex has seent it!!!
@@SeanTanktop I'd like to toss a suggestion out to 1996's The Ghost And The Darkness starring Val Kilmer and Kirk Douglas along with 2002's Dog Soldiers featuring Sean Pertwee and Liam Cunningham. The former being a Jaws-like title based on the real life Lions of Tsavo (which you can actually see in The Field Museum, being a Chicago man), and the latter is largely Predator but with werewolves.
Crimson Tide is under the radar one of the best Denzel performances
Hehe under the "Radar"
How believable is Gene Hackman as a grizzled ballistic sub commander. God damn!
I read before that the studios wanted Brad Pitt and Al Pacino to star in this film. That would have been interesting for sure... but I also couldn’t picture it with anyone else than these two legends.
Denzel vs Hackman, one of my favorite acting duels alongside Pacino vs De Niro (Heat) and Travolta vs Cage (Face/Off).
They are amazing!
You can tell Tarantino gave the script a dialogue polish with the Star Trek references, the speech about the horses, etc...
Tony Scott directing Denzel is a great combo. Man On Fire. It's my favorite Denzel role.
I like a lot of elements of that film more than the film as a whole, due to the editing style. But Denzel, elements of the script, Walken, Ruben Blades, even lil Dakota, all great! The editing kinda gets in the way of the good things the movie has going for it! But it’s the strongest of Tony’s Post-Enemy of The State output for sure!!
@@SeanTanktop I can see how Tony Scott's directing style can get in the way of the story. For me, Denzel is a strong anchor that grounds the story even in the midst of the heavy stylization. Personally, it works for me in Man On Fire. I find that movie is an example of that kind of hectic style done right. But no complaints on my part for anyone who thinks it detracts instead.
Charles Dunkley yeah, dude if you can vibe with it vibe with it, just a personal preference, cuase there’s tons to like about it. Zel with his delivery of “I’ll Snatch the Life Outta You” line is still one of the most intimidating threats in movie history and I mean shit, MoF is a Kubrick movie compared to Domino, so it’s got that going for it
It's not "Cobb," like a name. It's COB, which stands for "Chief Of the Boat." He's the highest ranking enlisted man on board. The Navy equivalent of an Army first sergeant.
We totally fucked that up thanks!!!
XO does indeed mean Executive Officer...the 2nd in command on a ship. A sub can be “blind” to anything behind it due to the acoustic noise created by its props.also, COB is an acronym for Chief of the Boat (the senior enlisted man aboard a sub), not his last name. Awesome movie for y’all to watch. Nicely done!
Also being "blind" because subs are primarily using passive sonar, ie just listening. It's pretty damn rare to not be "seen" with active sonar, ie the loud PING. American subs are some of the quietest in the world. Probably the quietest nucs.
@@moose2577 i think the US president told the Russian president all his subs responded to the stand down except one. and to avoid ww3 the US president gave the location of the Alabama to the closest sub to destroy her to avoid a launch because they lost communications. which in this case happened to be Russian,
@@ANTIStraussian
That actually makes a lot of sense.
Viggo Freaking Mortensen. This is one of his first big movies. I believe thanks in part to this movie, he got the part of the Master Chief in G.I. Jane since it was directed by Tony Scott’s brother, Ridley. Some extra footage from Crimson Tide was used in G.I. Jane. Also, the young boy playing Viggo’s son in the birthday party scene is Viggo’s actual son, Henry. We can thank Henry for convincing his dad to do “Lord of the Rings”. 😁
This and the small but quite memorable part in Carlito's Way probably helped.. :D
It's also interesting how he's gone back to doing whatever movies he feels like after the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Maybe the super stardom didn't fit him that well.
Since Tony makes good movies his nobody brother Ridley gets a movie?
@@Foksuh Viggo in general comes across as just a low key kind of guy who prefers doing under the radar films that focus more on characters versus big budget blockbuster stuff where the focus is more on visual effects. I thought he was great in Green Book for example among many other character driven films he's done since Lord of the Rings.
This movie did well also cause it was released during a time when people still went to movies because of the actors/actresses in the film or even the directors of the film. For decades including the 80s and 90s people went to see movies just as much if not more so because of who was in it as oppose to what it was about. Veteran actor Gene Hackman starring alongside the young up and coming Denzel Washington was a big draw for the film. Nowadays most people say they're gonna check out the new Marvel/DC film or the next franchise film, or the new Batman/Spiderman/Wolverine film or even the next "insert studio name" film. Whereas back then people went to check out the new Tom Cruise film or Steven Spielberg epic. Actors/Actresses/Directors were still used as draw for films.
I'd say concepts were also major factors for audiences back then b/c people went to see ET, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Gremlins, Karate Kid, Jurassic Park, Twister, Home Alone, The Mummy, etc... even though those films didn't have big stars. Even the most popular actors weren't immune to flops. Nowadays, franchises dominate the box office.
Yes!!! I went to go see a Denzel movie a short while ago and my friends hesitated when we decided on what movie to watch! I was like, "WTF it's Denzel "fking" Washington!" Name me a bad Denzel movie or performance you regret watching. There is none! I still go to the movies because of actors and directors. And can't wait to get back in 2021!
@@simpleysims The closest one I can think of is Ricochet (1991) b/c many found it too over-the-top. Certainly not boring though.
@@simpleysims Um, I can name 2 Denzel films of the top of my head I didn't really care for and it wasn't really because of him (he was fine, the movies themselves were crap). Fallen and American Gangster. Didn't like either of them. He gives great performances no matter what though.
This was part of my grandfather’s pretty expansive VHS collection. I watched the shit out of this when I was seven. Great movie - two great performances!
Was not expecting you guys to react to this movie. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. As for Hackman's bigotry...could it be trolling or a comment made to be as intentionally wounding and upsetting as possible (without being racist)? When this came out, I was 19 or 20 and I remember back then that Hackman reminded me of one of the bully football coaches I had in high school. He said all sorts of messed up stuff too but we could never determine if he was racist or just a complete jerk.
We talked a bit more at length, it would seem he’s doing any and everything to get a rise out of Denzel, to hurt him and make him lose his composure and either get him to give him the key or attack him and have him arrested by the COB or shot. Hackman is ranting and raving and pulling guns on people and going nuts and Hunter never cracks. He gets punched in the face twice and he didn’t break.
And while I’m sure there’s racist boomer residue, the fact that the movie essentially leaves them on good terms and Ramsey being humbled and recommending Hunter get the boat, it would seem he was just using whatever means to get Hunter’s goat.
That said, this was also punched up by Quinten “You’re part Eggplant” Tarantino, and he and the mid 90s in general were obsessed with injecting racial tension story elements into large tent pole properties into any place they could, for good or ill, it was mode of the times and that could be a part of that as well.
Quentin Tarantino contributed to the script and that section feels like it mirrors the Sicilian speech in True Romance.
LMFAO! The two best lines: "The AV club to the rescue" and "Come on you nerds!"
Washington and Hackman were on top of there game
Don't know if you guys will see this, but the reason why that second message is so important is because when in receipt of a possible message, all possible means of correcting errors or missing contents must be taken.
Oh yeah, got that and discussed it in the video.
Tony Scott (1944-2012) did a good job Directing this film, including the psychological thriller THE FAN, where an obsessed baseball fanatic (Robert DeNiro) goes through great lengths to help his favorite San Francisco Giant (Wesley Snipes) to get him back on his feet, even committing murder and kidnapping.
The Fan is the shit man for real. It got so many negative reviews but it’s one of my favorite movies of the 90s. DeNiro was perfectly cast for this film. Kinda reminded me of Cape Fear.
It’s crazy, it I was just thinking about this movie earlier today & thinking maybe I should watch it again.
Great Minds Sue! And you totally should it’s a banger of a 90s thriller!
I'm surprised that nobody laughed their ass off when Captain Ramsay suddenly told Hunter to shut the fuck up. Lol! Gets me every time!!
He said “I don’t think that improved the film actually.” This was an EXCELLENT reaction.
Denzel already had an Oscar and also did Malcolm X before this so I think he was far beyond up and comer. Really fun movie.
That’s fair!
With the passing of Ennio Morricone this week, several movies he scored would be great for reactions. The Dollars Trilogy, The Mercenary, In the Line of Fire, The Untouchables...
We’re gonna do the GBU definitely at somepoint
This was a FANTASTIC flick!
I'm sorry I'm late guys! I hope you all had a nice a safe 4th of July weekend.
We we’re late too boss! No worries thanks for coming by to hang again!!!
Nobody talking about the fantastic fucking score. Hans Zimmer with the win again!
We mentioned it in the Full Reaction on Patreon
One of my Favorite All Time Movies
Denzel and Gene in heated vocal face-off ranks right up there with Pacino and De Niro in HEAT! I actually met Hackman at the Malaprop's Bookstore and Cafe in Asheville back in 2008 when he was promoting his new Civil War epic novel ESCAPE FROM ANDERSONVILLE with co-author/historian Daniel Lenihan - got a freakin' autograph!
Scene when they don't agree to launch, similar thing happened with a Soviet Nuclear Sub during the Cuban Missile Crises.
The XO's position on US submarines is that of a political officer on a Soviet submarine... not same, similar...I think their job is to be a checker in a maker-checker type decision making process... their job is to sort of make sure that the captain doesn't do anything by himself...and in many ways they have more legal authority than the captain himself... probably not authority wise...and it's COB...not COBB...short for Chief of the Boat.... probably the highest ranking enlisted service member onboard a submarine...the OST is by Hans Zimmer...
4:16, RIP, James Gandolfini.
Thanks for the memory lane trip on this one, this was amongst the finest of 90’s military actioners. I apologise in advance for being so obvious in my suggestions, but have you done Con Air yet? I’m sure you’ll agree, equally as cerebral as this one ....... 😀
Lololol I think we’ve all seen it, but I’ll double check.
This was one of my most enjoyable movie experiences in the recent few months, and one of my favorite performances of Denzel Washington behind Training Day. Probably one of the most underrated military movies that I've seen. ( my dad was in the navy,so all this kinda makes me want to do is ask him is thoughts on this movie)
Not going to lie, this was the first reaction of yours I watched, and I immediately assumed you guys were going to piss me off the entire way through. I ended up loving it - had me laughing throughout.👍🏾
One of my favorite scores by Han Zimmer. Some of his best work.
U-571 isn't too bad. Solid WW2 submarine flick.
I love this movie have done since it's release. I don't know if you guys are aware but Tarantino was brought in to polish up the script having scripted True Romance for Tony Scott a few years earlier. You can tell I think especially with the Star Trek references and the best Silver Surfer argument scene.
The Star Trek convo snippet was used to intro a Star Trek TV special on TV in the late 90s.
Quentin Tarantino was involved with some of the screenplay and i feel like the whole stallion horses topic between gene and denzel was Quentin who wrote that topic with the stallions being born black first then white cool trivia to know but great movie in all solid B+ cheers guys love the reaction!
“Alex is that BEEEEEEG Yoda.”
Goddamn I love you dudes! You've reacted to a lot of my favs already and I'm sure these are already on your radar but: Bloodsport, Under Seige (ships! Gary Busey! Tommy Lee Jones!) and John Wick would be dope. I believe Gattaca is an underrated and manly af movie too. :)
Bloodsport is coming soon my dude.
I love GATTACA!!!
Some clarification:
COB is not the mans name, it's his title, Chief Of the Boat. He's the highest ranking NCO aboard, directly answerable to the submarines commander.
Weps is not the mans name, it's a short version of his title, Weapons Officer= Weps.
The ending was not what it should have been, it wasn't even close to 'you both screwed up equally'. Had Hackman's character gotten to do what he wanted to do he would have started WW3 and 3 billion people would have died. HE'S the one that wanted to throw out the Navy regulations at his whim when the X.O. didn't concur with launch.
In essence Denzel's character saved the world.
^^^^ Completely agree, I always hated that sentiment-like "well, in a way, they were both right", NO, one would have killed half the world, and was about to shoot crew members who didn't concur with his plan. There didn't need to be any debate - they have a system, both have to agree to launch, they didn't, end of story right there.
Everybody misses the part about redundancy. Denzel said that the U.S. is watching them and if they don’t fire they’ll pass the order to the next sub because there were multiple subs in that area so they should confirm before following the first order.
I'm glad that as a 90's film it didn't have a car chase.
So many courts-martial and so many military lawyers would have been going over that for years - probably nobody involved would have ever sailed again. It's a Tony Scott movie and the music is done by Hans Zimmer - what's not to like?
Is it a coincidence that my favorite movies mostly feature Hans Zimmer scoring them? Dark knight trilogy Gladiator hell even the Lion King LOL
Zimmer stole that doleful French horn passage directly, note for note, from Wagner.
Okay everyone, should you decide on a classic movie, try Hitchcock’s Rear Window.
We're gonna do some Hitch and some Kurosawa v v soon. Prolly BULLIT too!
I remember seeing this in the theater. My husband liked it. I fell asleep.
End of Watch, please!
This looks really good looks like one I need to own
For me ending was satisfying...in the end, both men had valid reasons. It was not about just them or their egos.
He said watch three men bite their nails in total silence lol
And Die Hard obviously!!!! Thanks for your great reactions boys
We have a good friend and we found out he's never seen Die Hard before. Christmas time, we're totally gonna do it.
Will True Romance be on the Manly Movie list
Well now that we found out Lex hasn’t seent I think we gotta do it!!!
@@SeanTanktop Gandolfini has the same evil look that he had on the sub as he had in the motel room
No backup radio on a nuclear submarine? Still a great movie though.
Great reaction n review fellas...I still watch the thrones videos from time to time jus cuz I miss u guys...I was 22 wen this movie came out it instantly became one of those movies if ur channel surfing u come across it u watch it...and I agree Cobb is the man...the soundtrack from Hans was overlooked I believe...#CrismonTide
Do you guys watch Last Kingdom?
Appreciate it man! The score is one of Zimmers fucking best! Yeah this TBS Superstation in the middle of a Sunday movie all the way. If it’s on, no matter where you are in the story, you gotta watch it! Cobb is the 🐐! Thanks for hanging boss!
Best line of the movie: I'm captain of this boat, NOW SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!
14:29, THEY DO have weapons lockers on Submarines in real life.
Excellent as always lads!
Have any of you seen master and commander? Probably one of the best naval-historical movies!
OH WE GOT TO!
Love that film.
So this comment is SUPER late, but submarines use sonar not radar. Radar uses radio waves to spot distant solid objects, but doesn't work through water as water is technically a semi-solid. So naval ships, specifically submarines, use sound waves which can travel through water to achieve the same effect. However there is a catch, see these sound waves can be interfered with by even the slightest ambient sound, including the sounds produced by your own submarine's engines. This means that all subs are blind to their rear arc, and thus can be snuck up on or eve snuck past.
Gene Hackman was a badass
It's funny, but no submarine vs submarine underwater torpedo fight has ever happened. They're in all the submarine movies, but there's only ever been one recorded submarine vs submarine torpedo kill. And that was in a harbor, with the other submarine surfaced and unsuspecting like any other boat.
George Dzundza is the final heartbreaker in The Deer Hunter.
And I can see the Aykroyd but he's less funny (kinda) but fatter Jerry Orbach.
It's a better description than fat Dan Aykroyd.
This movie and U-571 are the best submarine movies of all time.
The problem with following orders in hand with regards to nuclear weapons release, if another unauthenticated message had been only partially received, is that at any moment your target could have changed and you could now be pointing at allies... or worse, civilians. Or, as we saw in the movie, enemy forces surrendered mere minutes after the launch order was given.
This movie relied on the absolute worst timing ever in order for its main plot to work. The partial message is the entire source, and MUST be viewed from all potential outcomes, rather than assuming everything is as it was before the new message. The "if a message is not authentic, follow the orders in hand" only applies if authentication checks were made, and the message failed to match.
But if you don't make it that far, and you do not know what is on the message,... you now no longer know who or what you are aiming at.
i think the US president told the Russian president all his subs responded to the stand down except one. and to avoid ww3 the US president gave the location of the Alabama to the closest sub to destroy her to avoid a launch because they lost communications. which in this case happened to be Russian,
@@ANTIStraussian Hmm... that is plausible.
jfk had the best opening build up segment
Such a good film...solid A.
They were both right and both were wrong at various points, but Hackman's character had that one line: "What'd you think, son? That I was just some crazy old coot, putting everyone in harm's way as I yelled 'YEE-HA!'?" And HE WAS. When he received the first message ordering the launch he STOPPED considering any other possibility and effectively WAS fully committed to ending up the world with a hearty, "Murica! F yeah!" THAT, IMO, made him extraordinarily unfit from that moment on for the command of a strategic missile sub, and from that moment on Washington's character - regardless of mistakes to that point - was absolutely in the right to remove him from command, did so (AFAIK) entirely by proper procedure, and had every reason to verify the second message and should have had full support of ALL the crew. It shouldn't have mattered that the second message was incomplete and therefore invalid. Given the insanely maximized gravity of the consequences, to not even TRYING to verify the second message made the captain a crazy old coot, putting everyone in harms way as he yelled "YEE-HA!"
Your favorite Denzel role? Have you seen Man on Fire? He kills a corrupt cop with a bomb shove up his arse. That is a Manly Movie you must see!
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉
Good reaction from you guys. Seems the guy on the far right wasn't too crazy about Denzel's character in the early stages of his taking over the sub. It almost felt like he wanted Hackman's character to be right; nuclear war be danged. *_I'm launching!_* Lol.
7:49, shit, that close!
22:55, but he got away with it at the end like my dad said when my family and I saw this film in 2018.
Ha!
You guys need to start this back
I can't believe you guys haven't done a Tarantino movie yet. I recommend Inglorious Basterds.
15:38, that's a cool scene right there. 😊 Love it.
17:19, Rivetti is awesome!
13:20, fuck that's brutal! This scene was brutal when I saw it. I felt sorry for them.😔
5:45, LOL! He's the XO, baby!
12:32, that was cool!!! Yeah!!!
I loved this movie when I saw it in theaters when I was twelve. Having since served on a nuclear missile submarine, I can't watch it anymore. No one on my sub could. It's a borderline comedy to me, now.
Oh I’m sure it’s a cartoon to an actually maritime solider
What happened to you guys watching Training Day?
Interesting cuts...im like where's the fire scene? lol
20:30, that's right, and when they get older they turn white and patches of black on their bodies.
If you like this kind of role for Denzel check out "Man on Fire" and "The Book of Eli"
Honestly, it scares me seeing some people react to this movie who were on Ramsey's side. I mean, c'mon people, you would honestly risk starting WW3 knowing that there's a possibility that you're wrong! You don't make that type of decision unless you're 100% certain. Even if you're 99.9%, that's not good enough.
You forgot U571.
You want an insanely tense submarine movie, you gotta watch "Das Boot." You want a great technothriller submarine movie, you gotta watch "Red October." You want a super under appreciated Denzel thriller, checkout "Fallen."
agreed, Fallen is under-rated with an unexpected ending.
@@TheColorOfCaramel No other sub movie come even close to Das Boot. I would even say that Das Boot is one of the greatest movie ever made.
I barely remember Fallen(saw it only once, many years ago), except for the ending!
4:45, that's what's going on the real world, too.
U-571 is another Submarine thriller with Jon-bon-Jovi lol
Aw, they talked over the Kirby line.
:/
Alonzo before he met Jake Hoyt!!!
11:56, TORPEDO!!!
They can't launch if they both don't concur.
6:24, he's cool in this scene.
Gene Hackman is at his best when either being a snarky wise ass or losing his cool and flying off the handle in a film.
Definitely! It's a bit whispy, but if you wanna seen an amazing early Pacino and Hackman film, look up Scarecrow (1973) Amazing buddy movie, heartbreaking stuff, and damn funny!
@@SeanTanktop I have seen Scarecrow in small parts and enjoyed what I saw of it a bit. Pacino and Hackman are an interesting pair-up. Cinematography looked strong in it as I recall. If you enjoy heist related and honor-among-thieves (or truly lack-of) suspense thrillers, I recommend 2001's Heist with Gene hackman and Danny Devito. Hilarious, rowdy fun with the slickest stilted dialogue this side of the Rhine River (courtesy of the fascinating cinematic nutjob David mamet himself). That guy can make the F-Bomb poetic and rhythmic like it's nobody's damn business, LOL. Check it out, bud.
11:14, that's right.😂
Quentin Tarantino did re-writes for this film, and he included the race banter between Denzel and Hackman-Denzel wasn’t supportive of it.
Huh, it's so unnecessary and pointless. It's the sort of thing you'd include if a) racism was a theme of the movie or b) to make Hackman an unequivocal bad-guy, neither direction the film goes. Weird.
You have to do Man on Fire and Fallen next
I loved that movie until I went out to sea for the first time on an ssbn.
Another Hackman movie that would fit MMM is Unforgiven
and the firm
21:53, Abort Mission!
