Oliver Reed wasnt supposed to die. The original movie was supposed to end in him, not Djimon. Thank goodness for ridley and his team’s brilliance and cgi. They were able to piece together oliver’s death scene to complete his performance instead of recasting it. With djimon ending the movie and all the changes, i think it gave more depth to this masterpiece!

The main senator is played by Derek Jacobi, who starred in the BBC 70s adaptation of I, Claudius, a truly amazing drama series about the Roman Empire, which is a huge inspiration on Game of Thrones (and like GOT, a true who-is-who of famous english actors). It play more as a very long stage play than a big budget swords and sandals epic but still great, in my opinion.

    ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?
IS THIS NOT WHAT YOU ARE HERE FOR!?
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture!
Hugh Jackman was actually considered for the role of Maximus while Russell Crowe was considered for Wolverine, but Crowe turned down X MEN to star in GLADIATOR, while Jackman played Wolverine.
Antonio Banderas, Tom Sizemore, Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise were considered as well.
The opening Battle scene was filmed in Surrey England, the gladiator training school was filmed in Morrocco, and finally, the scenes involving Ancient Rome were filmed in Malta, lasting for 19 weeks.
The film was dedicated to Oliver Reed, Proximo, as the actor died of a heart attack during filming.
Crowe sustained several injuries during filming and almost died as a direct result of them.
The scene where he's fighting Tigris of Gaul, the tiger almost killed him. Crowe walked away without a scratch on him.

1:06:56 The thing I like about the way Maximus kills Commodus, is that, like you guys said, he looks him in the eyes while he does it. How have we seen Commodus kill people? He smothered his ailing father in the middle of a hug. He sends Maximus's own men to execute him while he's not even decent enough to be there. He sends troops to murder an innocent woman and child and have their bodies put on display. He sends troops to kill gladiators in the night. And finally and most importantly, he **stabs Maximus in the back** before their duel: the act that is synonymous with betrayal and trickery. Every way he kills is underhanded and dishonorable. This snake of a man stabbed him in the back, and Maximus has the decency and honor to look him in the eye when he kills him.

I forgot how great this movie was.
    A couple of fun facts:
Apparently they did something subtle with Joaquin Phoenix's makeup to reflect his character's decline into madness and tyranny. Commodus is supposed to look slightly more pale and sickly every time we see him. Like he's becoming undead. Or a statue. It's so faint as to be subliminal.
There are a couple of Arnold Schwarzenegger connections in this movie. The giant gladiator, Hagen, is played by Rolf Moeller, former competitive bodybuilder who was Arnold's stunt double. Moeller also went on to play Conan in the cheesy Conan The Adventurer tv show back in the late 90's. Also, the retired gladiator Tigris of Gaul was played by Sven-Ole Thorsen, another former bodybuilder who came to America around the same time as Arnold and tried to break into movies. He wasn't as successful, but he still pops up here and there playing memorable thugs.
Interesting thing about the accents. There is a theory that, were Romans to speak modern English, they would do so with a British or a Welsh accent. The basis of this theory is the idea that the Welsh people are the descendants of Romanized Britons who were left behind when the Empire withdrew from the island. Not sure how much validity there is to this theory, but it's fun to contemplate.

My dad took me to see this in theaters when I was 12. He had no idea what we we were in for lol. Cap spitting off Roman history during this movie made me so happy, I wish I had friends who were that patient to let me go off like that. I'm pretty sure Oliver Reed had one of his infamous drinking binges during the filming of this movie (him and Ridley's dynamic must've been interesting). Apparently he was found at a bar with sailors or french legionnaires (don't remember which). Commodus is only second to Maximus in this movie and that's saying something. He is so scared of the people/mob of Rome that he becomes more ruthless than them in the end. So many layers in this movie. True classic.
Edit: I'm with Sean, Proximo is my favorite character.

Even still, that wasn't how it was "supposed" to work. The Imperator was supposed to name the best man for the job as his successor, regardless of blood relation. Of course in actuality it rarely worked out like that. That's pretty much what Marcus Aurelius meant to do with Maximus here.
