Have you Been to Rome?
Saw it from a airplane window
Yes my wife and I went to there in 2000. We hope to live there for a year when I retire. Such a wonderful City!
Not yet, I been to Milano and Venezia so far... probably next year I will go there.
I can't find any roads leading me to there...
Non fui in urbe Roma
"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next!"
That line gives me the chills every time i watch this scene.
But it should always be followed with:
"Please leave a message after the tone"

@@notsureyou hands down funniest comment in months 😅
Its an amazing scene ❤
Many people miss Maximus' disrespect of Commodus when he calls him Highness rather than Majesty!
I love when Joaquin says he'll tell the story of Emperor Claudius since Derek Jacobi (Senator Gracchus) actually played him in the 1976 BBC Television Mini-Series I, Claudius. A great adaptation, by the way.
ha ha, money for old rope for my boi derek
I remember seeing that miniseries when it was a 1981 rerun on PBS. I happened to be in 7th-grade Old World History back then and we were coincidentally studying Claudius and other Roman Emperors at the time. The show was marvelous and really pounded home the fact that he became Emperor because his neurological ticks and physical disabilities made Senators and Patricians believe he would be an easy person to control, but instead, they all found out the hard way that in reality Claudius was a shrewd, clever and ruthless leader by having them all killed before they could act.
The reason why Commodus has such protagonism here is actually pretty accurate. He popularized gladiators to get people’s favor, and got killed by one.
Strangled by one in the bath.
"Am I not merciful?!!" Joaquin Phoenix is magnificent in this film.
He should've won Best Supporting Actor.
My friend and I shout this line to each other all the time when we help each other out. If I pay for his lunch, I'll shout at him, "AM I NOT MERCIFUL?!:
@@domkovell5828 , holy shit. I do the same with one of my friends as well. Lmao!
"this guy has a Napoleon complex" ironically Joaquin Phoenix is playing Napoleon now in a new Ridley Scott movie :)
Napoleon complex suggests he is small. He wasn't.
Fun fact; did you know they used to flood the colosseum with water sometimes and have miniature naval battles there. Even to this day there aren't many places in the world where you could do that really.
"I glad we are kinda beyond .. kinda.. all of this".
These kinds of things have never stopped, it has just evolved.
Fun Fact: In the Assassin's Creed video games, the main character will outstretch their hand while walking slowly in tall grass. It is generally accepted that small bit of animation is inspired by this film.
I do need to play through all of those still.... Started the first one a while ago and haven't gotten deep into it.

The female vocalist for the soundtrack sang in a language she made up when she was young. It makes the hair's on my arms stand up every time I hear it
Her name is lisa gerrard .
Is it an actual language with translations, or is it just gibberish that people are labeling as a "language"?
Music is by hans zimmer, who is the absolute goat of film scoring. He and the people he gets on his team are always top notch
He is amazing ❤
GLADIATOR, DUNE. TOP GUN MAVERICK - HANS ZIMMER CAN'T MISS!! ❤❤
Alas! How quickly everyone forgets John Williams. 😢
40 years before this, a movie named 'Spartacus' with Kirk Douglas came out. I'd love to see a comparison of the 2 films.
"I think you are missing some screw drivers" I'm using that 🥂
Biss!!!
Your international knowledge, and multi lingual brilliance is quickly making you my favorite reactor on the tube!! Your accent is mesmerizing! Your delivery, your emotion, and commentary are spot on. Thank you!!!❤
One of your best reactions! Passionate and insightful. Cheers! 😊👍
Thank you so much ❤
I was maybe 12 when I saw Gladiator, I hated Joaquin Phoenix for a decade afterwards, what an amazing 'bad guy' performance, just absolute perfection.
Joaquin definately "Embodies" the Characters he plays......
He was only 26 ....stunning performance
Joaquin Phoinex is the name of the Evil Emperor, he is an epic actor and will love him in Signs with Mel Gibson.
Biscuit you're such a lovely young lady. You made me laugh aloud when you pointed out the missing 'former' tattoo and I realized I hadn't noticed it, even though I've seen this move a number of times. hahaha
GLORY (1989) is one I really think you'd like, Biss.
Movie was trash
@@impulsivereply9360 agree to disagree
"Gladiator" has at least three things in common with the epic "Ben Hur" (1959).
1. Both films are set in ancient Roman times
2. Both films are about a wronged non-Roman seeking revenge on a Roman
3. Both films had supporting actors who got screwed by the Academy Awards. Stephen Boyd (Messala) and Joaquin Phoenix (Commodus) were magnificent in their roles.
Also similar films are Troy and Brave Heart. these are a little more modern and don't have incest - inbreeding
Oh? ❤
@@BissFlix …..Ben Hur is one of the greatest films ever made. It’s quite long, but it’s so powerful. It has religious themes, but you don’t have to be religious to enjoy it. It also has a world famous deadly CHARIOT RACE. GREAT FILM.
"Go to sleep,it was just a dream"
WOW!!!!!
I always love your reaction.
Haha thank you, glad you are loving them ❤
Bisscute mocking Commodus was hilarious 👍 Good movie, fantastic performances by everyone especially Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix.
It definitely shows a very brutal time in history. The ending is bitter sweet. Maximus would have lived if Commodus hadn't cheated by stabbing Maximus before the fight. I usually prefer happier endings, but this movie is very well made.
Right? I enjoyed it ❤
I think my first couple times watching I felt the same way, and I wished Maximus had lived. However, upon further viewings its the absolute best way the movie could have ended. Maximus completed everything he needed to do on Earth, and was finally free to go home and reunite with his family after all those years.
Most of gladiators were slaves or ex-slaves, but some were free men who fought as a job, with a proper contract, led by a proper manager. They were considered in the same way as prostitutes and actors and basically as any kind of outcasts. They were often referred to as “infamous” (people with bad reputation).
hilarious reaction, bro. love the vicious streak and bloodlust...
I am glad you noticed that when Maximus fought Tigress, they were they were holding the tigers back from Tigress, but giving them extension for Maximus.
Most reactors don't catch that. The fight was indeed rigged.
hans zimmer scored both movies. he states he liked one piece so much he used a bit from The Pirates If The Caribbean. in this movie
I love your laugh...love your reactions to every single movie youbwatch and especially the music you listen too!!
Thank you for watching this... one of my favorite movies. He found his wife and son waiting for him in Elysium. I always tear up.
My pleasure, I loved the movie ❤
The singer who did the background music was Lisa Gerard, she sings for a band called Dead Can Dance, they are amazing.
@17:35 -- maggots are still used today to clean necrotic wounds because of the precise way they consume only rotten flesh without harming healthy flesh.
"I think you're missing some screwdrivers."
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture!
Amazing ❤
Joaquin Phoenix really stood out in this movie to me. He really made Commodus such an evil person you really hated. Also this must of been a director's cut or extended version....there were several scenes ive never seen before in this video reaction.
It is the extended cut, glad you enjoyed the reaction ❤
He plays the SAME CHARACTER IN EVERYTHING aka himself. He's not a good actor.
the standard version is better for some reasons
@@radicalreactions1633 Watch him in Signs. He's a hoot.
ive watched this film a number of times. "who will help me carry him?" always gets me. great film, but i agree with the assessment 4 out of 5. worth watching again for your wonderful reactions
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the reaction ❤
There are a lot of scenes what I dont remember and I watch the movie around 10 times. Ist there a DC or Special Edition?
Those Colosseum battles are epic - I love the part when the Clone Trooper transport comes down and all the Jedi come pouring out...
Oops, wrong movie.
You are absolutely correct that the opening battle music sounds like Pirates of the Caribbean - because it's the same composer Hans Zimmer!! Same style!
Thanks Biss...good reaction. I learned from you a little of your home country as well.
My pleasure, thanks ❤
I am SO ENTERTAINED! Great reaction!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it ❤
i love your knowledge, Bisscute, of Ancient European History. Only recently did i learn of your current physical location from another of your reaction videos. Much peace and love, my young CZcams friend. We love your channel. Shoutout from Gatlinburg, Tennessee. U. S. A.
When he throws one of his swords and say "are you not entertained?" the sword he holds shifts hands back and forth when the camera shifts angle.
"Bring a doctor!" k k kk
That was the most wonderful creative reaction I have heard in that scene😂😂
Looking forward to this! It’s my 2nd favorite after Shawshank Redemption. I can watch both of them whenever they are on and don’t get tired.
I love it when I see you get into the movie so fully. It’s sooooo cute!! ❤️❤️❤️
This is a 5 for me: a great story, some of history is correct, great cast, great production sets, great script, great special effects, stunning music and incredible ending. Won best Oscar film & best actor for Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix should have won, too. What more can a movie do for somebody?
Hope you enjoyed the reaction ❤
Of course
Saw this in the cinema when I was 15. A VERY powerful experience and a nice little memory. It’s still one of my absolute top movies.
For me it’s up there with Jaws, Clockwork Orange and The Godfather. LOVE it!!
Nice reaction too!
I don’t think I’ve seen you this fired up before! 😅
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it ❤
I think you and I would get along well. Jaws, Godfather, Gladiator are among my top movie experiences.
Personally, i'd add Jurassic Park, Fight Club, and Dances with Wolves, off the top of my head,
Maggot therapy is still used today for necrotic wounds. The maggots will only eat rotten flesh, cleaning the wound. It's only for extreme cases but most hospitals will perform it once in a while.
Apollodorus of Damascus, under Emperor Trajan (about year 100 a.D.), build a bridge across the Danube, to unify the new conquered province of Dacia.
Imagine how hard it was 2000 years ago to build a 1Km+ long/15m+ wide bridge across the longest European river...
And, if they did this on the farthest province, just imagine what they did in Rome, in Costantinopole, in Alexandria...
If you have a 5€ bill in your wallet, that aqueduct you can find outside of Nimes in France, it was build by Romans and still stands 2000 years later.
I'm overwhelmed by the greatness of that civilization.
Whan the gladiators were linked together - one was for attacking and the other was for defense.
The plans of Gracchus and Maximus are closely like the real life story of Cincinnatus.
Great Movie and Reaction Biss !!!! Keep it Up, You are the Best
Thank you so much ❤
*Hans Zimmer* is the composer. You already watched other movies composed by him: _The Last Samurai_ / _Interstellar_ / _Inception_ / _The Dark Knight_ / _The Dark Knight Rises_
He is amazing ❤
You were right.........He punctured his lung with that stab.
Yes the emperor could fight BUT never for his life in battle.
Enjoyed your knowledge about the time and the area.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it ❤
“Are you not entertained?” Is something I can see Biss saying to chat
Loved your reaction! This is still one of my favourite movies of all time.
The music is by Hans Zimmer; he is also responsible for music in Pirates of the Caribbean so that's why it sounded familiar to you. He has such a way of punching you in the feels with the soundtrack, I love his work so much. Another great example of this is Man on Fire, which I would also recommend to watch. 😊
Another epic movie you should react to is Kingdom of Heaven. Only watch the Director's Cut because that is vastly superior to the theatrical release which was butchered by edits and made character motives incomprehensible at times.
Hard agree.
great movie
Piss off. The theatrical was better.
I only saw the theatrical version and wasn't impressed. I didn't know there was a better directors cut, so thank you very much for that! Looks like I'll be watching that this weekend!
This 100%! Fantastic film, and directors cut is a much.
Slave who became emperor
Publius Helvius Pertinax (/ˈpɜːrtɪnæks/; 1 August 126 - 28 March 193) was Roman emperor for the first three months of 193. He succeeded Commodus to become the first emperor during the tumultuous Year of the Five Emperors. Born the son of a freed slave, Pertinax became an officer in the army.
What a lot of people don't know is that the thumb up/down denomination is incorrect. Historically thumbs up means "he dies", while thumbs down means "survival". But Hollywood swapped it around to be less confusing for audiences watching the movie
Bisscute, I just wanted to tell you that your Rumanian accent and the way you roll your R's is thoroughly charming. Listening to your narration throughout your reactions is always a delight to the ears!
ancient roman generals paid their armies from their own pockets.
Soldiers' pay was made in three instalments of 75 denarii in January, May and September. Domitian changed the intervals to three monthly and thus increased pay to 300 denarii. Under Severus he raised pay once more to an estimated 450 denarii. Caracalla gave a substantial increase of 50% probably to 675 denarii.

I love how everytime you see food in a movie you are instantly hungry lol
Maggots were sometimes used to eat the rotten/infected flesh of open wounds before being treated and bandaged.
You give us some trivia, so that's my contribution, lol.
"So that guy is locking ass... got it." AmAzing! Hahahaha Loved that moment i this reaction LOL
haha, glad you enjoyed that ❤
I'm excited to see you react to Gladiator. It's one of my favorite movies. I hope you enjoy it.
This film is one of the few that I love from start to finish. A true Masterpiece
I love some of the accuracies of the film, like the story Commodus told about Claudius, concerning the buzzing bees, which really happened.
Oh really? ❤
@@BissFlix I stand corrected!
Claudius was very clever and devious and had numerous people assassinated and he had spoiled many plots against his life, but my latest fact check shows that this particular story was invented solely for the film.
Yet, it would have been along the lines of something Claudius would have said and done during his reign, so the story on the surface certainly seemed to be factual.
Best to you-
The soundtrack was one of Hans Zimmer's early ones before he started doing everything. I also recommend his soundtrack to Hannibal (2001).
Such a good movie
It is ❤
10:45 during the roman principate or early imperial era the title of Princeps (first citizen) was what we call emperor and the title was not mandatory to be inherited by blood but it was chosen by the current caesar with the "approval" of the senate. At least that was the theory behind the process.
Thank you for watching the video, It means a lot to me .

42:54 "Bread and circuses" (or bread and games; from Latin: panem et circenses) is a metonymic phrase referring to superficial appeasement.
the soundtrack to me is still to date the best yet composed, its a masterpiece, not just the action sequences but so much more.
also i just came back from my 6th trip to Rome, love that city ,love (roman) history
"Ssshhh! Go to sleep Commodus, it was only a dream". 😂 Love your dark sense of humour!
Haha, glad you enjoyed that ❤
@@BissFlix made me smile 🙂
"Bread and circuses" (or bread and games; from Latin: panem et circenses) is a metonymic phrase referring to superficial appeasement. It is attributed to Juvenal (Satires, Satire X), a Roman poet active in the late first and early second century CE, and is used commonly in cultural, particularly political, contexts.
In a political context, the phrase means to generate public approval, not by excellence in public service or public policy, but by diversion, distraction, or by satisfying the most immediate or base requirements of a populace, by offering a palliative: for example food (bread) or entertainment (circuses).
Juvenal originally used it to decry the "selfishness" of common people and their neglect of wider concerns. The phrase implies a population's erosion or ignorance of civic duty as a priority.
This phrase originates from Rome in Satire X of the Roman satirical poet Juvenal (c. 100 CE). In context, the Latin panem et circenses (bread and circuses) identifies the only remaining interest of a Roman populace that no longer cares for its historical birthright of political involvement. Here Juvenal displays his contempt for the declining heroism of contemporary Romans, using a range of different themes, including lust for power and desire for old age to illustrate his argument.
43:34 He was originally supposed to be the one in the final scene buying the little figures in the arena. But before they finished shooting the whole movie, the actor passed away in a bar from a heart attack.
Instead of recasting and reshooting the role, they made it where his character dies in the movie.. The actor had a very long career in to movie industry.
Nice, in the extended version you can see the foot of the "Colossus" a pair of times. great detail
I glad to see that you are healthy again, back to your energetic beautiful reactions. I studied Latin and Roman culture in school. I always enjoy films that delve into that world. While the character Maximus was fictional, Commodus was very real. He did bring back the gladiator combat in the Colosseum and fought in them. His rule ended a period of peace and started a massive decline in the empire that had a lasting effect even after his assassination.
Thank you, I'm glad to be feeling better again ❤
Trivia: contrary to popular misconception, "thumbs up" meant "bare your blade" and kill him, "thumbs down" meant "sheathe your sword" and let him live.
"I feel for Comudus right now" - lol

17:37 Yes. The maggots will eat the dead flesh. Since Commodus came before Napoleon shouldn't it be Napoleon having a Commodus complex??? 42:55 Yep ... bread and circuses. 51:53 I believe the saying you are looking for is: "He has a screw loose.".
Have you ever seen Rome by HBO and the BBC? It's a 2-season show about the end of the Republic and the start of the Empire, with an amazing cast (not that many famous Hollywood folks, but lots of experienced stage actors etc). It features many of the historical characters one would expect (Julius Ceasar, Marc Anthony, Cicero, Cleopatra, Augustus, ...) but much of it is shown through the eyes of 2 soldiers coming home from the Gallic war.
Love that series. Game of Thrones couldn't have happened without it.
Loved that series! I binge watched it in Iraq on deployment. Best part of the whole year ;)
