    I have played this piece and the other Handel sonatas on mountains, in caves and canyons in campsites deep in the widlerness, inside boxcars on freight trains, in stairwells, in the wooden chapel at a Harvard dormitory (the best sound), and before an audience in Varanasi, India, but it has been a couple of decades since I've played it. It's time that I get back to it, and Brüggen, the inspiration for me when I was in my 20's, is still the player who inspires me more than any other.

    I've never heard these sonatas on recorder, which is odd because I think they're published in Handel's day for that instrument. Always heard them on violin or some other instrument and I never enjoyed them until now, hearing them on recorder.

    I like this rendition beamcause it is simple with a crystal ckear phrasing- not overkiaded with narcissistic irbemabtation that often spoils the line of the music

    Interesting to see Bruggen playing a Coolsma alto in 440 in this picture.

    vanmorgen de uitvoering van Patrick Denecker beluisterd en ook al ben ik misschien wat bevooroordeeld, Patricks adembeheersing is top, terwijl ik hier eerder mezelf hoor spelen op momenten dat ik zenuwachtig ben ...

    Were they all playing by memory? Impressive!

    • @Claudiogebhardt
      @Claudiogebhardt Před 3 lety

      Most musicians play by memory (especially soloists), so I guess while the recorder player played by heart, the others probably didn't.

    Brüggens is an important figure for recorder revival. But I cannot accept this diafragmatic vibrato (typical issue for the 19th and 20th centuries musical wind playing). It is importat reading and studying all the Baroque treatises which deal with perfomance such as those by Hotteterre, Couperin, Tosi, Corelli, Freillon-Poncein, Quantz, and others. Nowadays, recorder players such as Bosgraaf, Horsh, Laurin, Ballestracci, and others, do not use vibrato. It is not used for the Italian recorder music, and for the French one we use "flattement", a kind of shaking made with fingerings, not with diafragm, or even tongue. Franz Brüggens has his merits and he keeps his place but his playing is considered not historically accurate nowadays.
