I 100% get what you mean with the whole rock trend at the moment not really sounding authentic. I love rock and I do like a few of the rock songs that have come out of kpop recently but a lot of them also just don't really feel like they've done the genre justice, it feels like quite a few are just adding in a little electric guitar because it's trendy and not actually implementing the rock instrumentals in a way that improves the song, it's just kind of there. Dreamcatcher are just built different though, they have mastered the craft of mixing rock with various different genres and making it sound authentic
Do dreamcatcher go hard or what? Between reason, Damian and rising, they show absolutely no sign of losing their passion and calming down. Just an incredible run of classics.
It’s so fun watching them do something different while still retaining the essence of Dreamcatcher. The lyrics of OOTD are a bit satirical/tongue in cheek.. about narcissism and vanity. They slay as always, but bought some extra sexiness and maturity to it. Baddie era indeed!
Rising is the stand out for me, and I can understand why it wouldn’t make a good single choice. I hope we get another self-made video for it.
OOTD lacks a few of the DC signatures, but I still really like it. I’m all for them trying new things. This one in particular is more similar to what Ollunder produces for ATEEZ, the group not the decade.
After 2-3 listens it's one of my favorite song of them. Recorded drums, not electro-substitute, really deep base where it needs to be, genuine delivery, they do better and better! It seems contract renewal renewed the girls themselves, from the uncertainty of their future in Maison and Vision (which ironically correlates with the general narrative of their songs), to gratitude in Reason and acceptance in BonVoyage, they're now just radiating inspiration.
They don't anymore want wins or recognition or anything at all, they've got it all. Now they just want to do what they love and share their feelings with us, these are vibes I'm getting. And I'm totally here for it.
Also, as you said, they have maintained their image, it's hard thing to do with such genre diversity, still amazes me everytime how can they do it.
A question here, so the drums are like a real instruments and not a drum kit, is it?

Love that Dreamcatcher aren't afraid to do something completely different from what we've seen from them. It's very admirable. Rising is my fave track by far. Such a headbanger

At first glance you could think OOTD is about them being proud and happy with themselves, about confidence. I don't think that is it though. I have no idea if my theory is correct, but the fact that the album is called VersuS VillainS makes me think it is not this simple. So I believe this song is meant as a criticism of narcissism, materialism and also (maybe) the fast fashion industry. "OOTD" stands for "Outfit of the Day" after all, clearly fast fashion.
The fact that fashion is moving ever faster is actually the most destructive industry to the planet apart from the fossil fuel industry. The Aral lake has all but disappeared because of the cotton industry for example. It would fit to the Villain image, and you can see in the MV that they are acting. It is shown in the scene where Yoohyeon and Handong are fighting, but then the camera is off and Handong helps Yoohyeon up.
The main reason why I don't think it is about confidence or their own success is the line "Driving on the highway, drunken everyday, do you feel like a monster?" and the album title. That just doesn't fit.
It could also be a big and well-hidden F*U to the Kpop industry, like the Nightmare arc probably was. The narcissism and materialism is definitely criticized here, and Dreamcatcher have been criticized a lot themselves because of their rock/metal concept, while other groups have been celebrated for using a guitar riff once in a song.
The music is highly interesting as well. There still is rock there, but dialed back. The song structure is not what you'd expect at all, for me it is punk rock meets K-Pop. Not their usual spiel, but a very good progression. It takes a couple of listens to really enjoy it.
That last track was Alan Walker style. Brilliant!

I love the point you made about authenticity and how there's a culture to different genres. I've had that feeling for a long time now when it come to kpop using hip hop and more recently rock, but I've never been able to put it into words as well as you did. There definitely is a disconnect with how some groups try to use rock that makes it not come across as genuine. Just adding a guitar to the instrumental without any other context or anything to give it roots in rock makes it feel off like a weird imitation.

Rising is basically metal-pop. You said really gold about rock-sound in pop, it always sounds just like people who have never listened to rock except for like Bohemian Rapsody and think like they know everything, they just don't think. But Dreamcatcher's rock sounds properly, sometimes I even feel sad that they don't play instruments like Rolling Quartz or Xrdinary Heroes, but then again, they maybe wouldn't be so popular...
Shatter suddenly has brought me a Massive Attack vibes, I don't even know what genre is it. Agreed, my favorite from the album, 10/10. And I absolutely love it's messed up ending:)
We Are Young at first notes gave me "Shine with me" of Ive, but then it just went all the way to Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Heads will roll somehow:) Good song, but not for me either.

Gurl I am SO GLAD to see you reacting to this! OOTD was incredible, especially Dami's rap (as always), and Rising felt as you said authentic and it was so, SO good to hear after the trend of like "pop rock lite" being in every song these days. Shatter I still have no idea what even is but I am OBSESSED, and We Are Young is nice but the previous 3 tracks really just hit different for me.
I love that edm has been elevated enough to where an edm song could be considered an anthem that's so cool

I really like OOTD, the lyrics are absolutely not my thing BUT I hadn't time to read about the backstory yet so I give them, along with what I saw in the MV, the benifit of the doubt.
This MV though, they somehow look extra gorgeous and in parts, there is no other word for it, so damn hot. All of them, though SuA always kills me a bit more, especially with this top, skirt and jacket combo.
Rising sounds so good that I am almost mad it doesn't go a bit harder in the instrumentation, like a bit faster in the chorus and harder guitar tone, but man what a fun song. I even don't mind the "Ri-ri-ri" as much as I normally would; probably because it goes well with the guitar strumming going with it.
Shatter is gonna be one of my favourite tracks by them, probably.
We Are Young is, as expected, just not my kind of sound and song. Dreamcatcher pulled off to make me like or even love a lot of songs in genres I normally don't listen to, but that's the first miss for me. Oh well, one song in the whole discography I don't like. (:
Yes, great comeback and something different from DC. But oh dear We Are Young let's the party down. Rising and Shatter (especially) are EPIC though.

white people dance music is exactly what it is LMAO i have to be very drunk to enjoy that kind of sound normally but the choruses have enough pretty moments (when siyeon goes ileong ileong ileonggg) that i could see myself occasionally being in the mood for them
