  • The rising price of the Modern format has been a topic on my mind for a while and has recently come to a head from a tweet by Saffron Olive around the cost of The One Ring!
However, instead of making a video on it myself, I trusted fellow youtuber ‪@PleasantKenobi‬ to make a good video on it (spoilers: he did!) so let's react to it!

It's sad when I can buy a Warhammer army that doesn't rotate and which I can mostly use forever for the same price as a Modern deck that now I will have to rotate out due to bans or new sets. =/

You can definitely use the army forever if you aren't going to tournaments with strict guidelines. Hell, back when I played about two decades ago, the store that I went to did serious tournaments. Yet, the majority of players were players and not hobbyists, so a large number of models were barely glued together. And even fewer were actually painted. Most were just primed. And some not even that. 😂

You don't need a copy of the card to proxy it in Commander. For some reason some people think that's the cutoff point.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ Před 3 dny +4

This is really dependent upon play groups and where you're playing. If you're just a kitchen table player, then sure, proxy away if your group doesn't care. However, if you're going to any of the LGSs that I've visited over the past 5 years since getting back into the game, then you do NEED the copy of the original.
For example, there were a number of players with expensive cards like Duals, that they proxied for play purposes, but they had to at least show the store that they did own the card. And it wasn't just show them one time; it was show the card whenever asked otherwise you're disqualified from the event. As for casual play at the store, even that was up to individuals. Too many players were bringing entirely proxied cEDH decks to play "casually," and needless to say, the players who spent actual money on the cards got pretty upset. The store owner also didn't appreciate the freeloading of the players doing this using his space for free, and never actually supporting the store. So yeah, it can be a big deal.

Years ago like I want to say around 2018, I was talking to Gregory from 401 games; that based on how things are going with Magic, that Modern would become the new Legacy because Wizards can't print OG Dual lands and anything from the Reserved List to capitalize on older formats, and that there would be a new format that would become the "NEW Modern" that will sit between Modern and Standard whatever they decide to call that format which eventually became Pioneer. So what I'm saying is that Pioneer is the New Modern and Modern is now Legacy. What I didn't think would happen which Rudy from Alpha Investments predicted that Magic would have serialized cards and other extreme hard to find cards and also make new age Reserved List cards from Secret Lair / Universes Beyond which creates a FOMO which would lead to buyouts and the eventually having new age fake reserved list cards that are locked from legal IP contracts, which I think Wizards very well knew of, which drives the FOMO up for year after year price hike ups and don't say it's inflation when we're looking at like $600CAD collector booster boxes, and $400CAD MH3 boxes. You know what you can buy for $600? PS5, XBOX, etc....

    • @Xoulrath_

It's a big deal because back then, the print runs of those cards were much smaller, because the player base was much smaller. That is not the case anymore for those cards that you mentioned.
Goyf alone got hit in price because of both reprints and cards like Fatal Push easily dealing with it. So a combination of them printing more to meet demand, combined with new cards that powercreep design, no matter how small. Quite frankly, the fact that Push didn't exist years ago in some way, with Black being the color of single target removal, is just bad design. Even Goyf was a damn mistake as far as it's 1 Toughness; two Goyfs were supposed to just trade with each other.
As for the rest of those cards, they got reprints, and then also got pushed out of the format in some way or another because of power creep too. It's by design: "See everybody, we reprinted all of those ridiculously expensive cards that you wanted. It's all good now." Meanwhile, they break some new cards which become the shiny new maut have, while making the new reprints mostly obsolete or niche at best. So who cares that the priced got lowered.
It's a shit show over at Wizards and they must be thanking their gods for the casuals and Commander.

@williamdrum9899 That was my point. That was also around the time that people were talking about the rumors that Daniel Craig would be replaced as James Bond, and I said I thought Idris Elba would make an amazing Bond. But no. I was "siding with white supremacists" because I called him out on a stupid joke that he clearly did just for clicks and to act edgy while playing it safe.

Y'all know there's plenty of exile artifact removal spells out there. I don't see this card as a problem.

The one ring does not need a reprint yet. It was in every bundle and that set came out last year. I'm against reprinting this soon. Cause as soon as they reprint it it will go down in price then everyone will be complaining about it's value going down. There's nothing they can do cause whatever they do is mtg players will complain

TOR is the example of WotC purposely making a card that will be forever expensive due to its combination of being undeniable powerful + being colorless so fits in every deck.
It's essentially the card draw version of Mana Crypt

At that point I would say that this should’ve been an element of calculated risk for these finance types when they decided to invest in children’s card game.

Please dude, don’t be just another piggy back content stealer. Just do your own thing. I know Saff and PK have a big influence under MTG content, but just stick to your stuff. ❤

You are already stealing intellectual property. You just admitted in your video that you print proxies. You cant be worried about legalities of IPs when you yourself are thieving it. The guy that you are piggy backing content from(PK) actually knows how the proper way to proxy is(hint: it doesn’t involve printers). Since you already reuse his content go watch one of his videos about proxies and learn how you are pirating.

I don't care for universes beyond, and I'm glad some cards are $100 and up. Games always had chase and expensive cards. Sorry some cards aren't for poors.

The One Ring is a cool card if the clause in all formats was you can only have one copy in your 75. This card design made sense on paper but in action with a playset it's just lame and unfair on a fundamental level. I have seen folks on Reddit argue "it's four mana, it's reasonable!" and I honestly cannot imagine thinking *this* fucking card is fair in any context.
