I have a 2023 CX-50, picked in July 2022 and currently have 16,500 on the motor. The cars feel sporty and likes to be driven sporty. Only issue is the gas mileage can be abysmal when you drive the car in sport mode with the shift gate. But the payoff is you have way more control than any CVT.

I am not sure I understand your CVT comment. I had a 2019 Honda Accord with CVT, the most powerful car I ever owned. That car ran like a rocket while boasting 35+ mpg. Simply unbeatable, unstoppable. I did 168k in 16 months with that car! Incredible!!
Consistently set my adjustable cruise at 88 on Texas Interstates from South of Houston and San Antonio through DFW to New Mexico. Me, the trucks and all those oil bound pickup trucks. Just an amazing machine!! I had a Mazda 5 in about 2007. Loved it, but it started feeling like an old go-cart at about 45k. Certainly, the cx-50 is better quality. It is just hard for me to go away from Honda ever again.

At first it was novel and exciting to rent an EV, especially on the company dime. However like the Prius before it, eventually the novelty wears off and people realize a Model 3 is just a pretty boring economy car. The Model S was sexy as a style copy of an Aston Martin but the T3 and Y are just appliances.

Im in the same place age-wise and pov. I have had 6 Mazdas going back to the 70s RX7 up thru the GLC hatchback, 626GT,another 626GT, Millenia S and now a 2011 Miata MX5. In between, have had a Lexus SC 300, Honda Prelude, Accord, Camry as my wifes cars. The older Hondas and Toyotas were very good cars too but only the Prelude was remotely fund to drive. The Lexus looked sporty and was quiet as hell inside but drove like a Camry. Meanwhile, even my little 80 GLC with a stick had balls and was fun. All were very reliable except the only one that was heavily Ford influenced and made in MI, the Millenia. Fun to drive but at around 93K miles and 10 years it started to have lots of issues, all Ford components. Looking to replace my wifes 2006 Accord with 145K miles and have driven the CRV and the RAV4 and neither is exciting driving dynamics. The RAV is loud and feels underpowered and handles poorly. I was actually disappointed because I see lots of them in HI where I live but a good friend who is a mechanic says they have lost their way with the CVT. My nieces 3 year old new CRV has had issues with oil and gas mixing, trans slippage and a few minor things. NEW car. Her first new car out of college. Her prior CRV was 20+ years old and a beater that went 230K miles. The new ones are NOT the same. I will say that with Mazdas, I like buying the ones from Japan better. The QC just seems to be better. I have been stalking alot of FB groups for the CX5 and 50 and there are some issues with the 50 like windshields, rattles, etc. Nicer looking vehicle but I might be more inclined to go with the CX5 as older, more proven technology.

Comparing the used CR-Vs and RAV4s with similar specs, the RAV4 will always be selling for 2 or 4 thousand more than the CR-V. Very surprised u didn’t mention that so many are having problems with the skyactive engines… the cylinder deactivation is not good. I test drove 8 of these, two of the 8 had issues when cruising at low speeds when cylinders were deactivated.. bucking felt like a transmission issue but was the cylinder deactivation not functioning correctly.. yea the dealerships “fix” it by adjusting the computer but they aren’t really fixing it.. just covering up the problem which is cylinder deactivation..

    • @timingenkamp3973
      @timingenkamp3973 Před 5 měsíci +4

It's more than just the transmission. Skyactiv system is balancing the power between all 4 tires to optimize grip without losing control due to under or oversteering. The moose test simulates a high speed turn around a moose which crossed onto the road in front of you. Doing 40mph, you cut a hard left into the oncoming lane, followed by a hard right to get back to the right lane. Toyota Rav didn't successfully complete it as it could not maintain 40mph throughout. It barely did the hard left, but nearly rolled at the hard right turn. Mazda did it successfully all the way to a constant speed of 49mph before the rear wheels drifted slightly. If you want to see it in action, I recommend searching on YT for CX-5 hill climb, or CX-5 Nurburgring (This one uses a 1st gen, 1st model year CX-5 in 2013 and did it in 9:22 which is slower than a Ferarri Testarossa by only 8 seconds.)

Keeping a close eye on the underbody as the MoT (roadworthiness) testers here in the UK still can't handle seeing surface "rust staining" on the major compoents (axle, sub-fram etc) which comes with all Japanese autos.

I like the Looks of the Mazda. They are very sharp.
However, I enjoy my 2022 RAV4 Limited Hybrid a LOT.
It is not a perfect vehicle by any means but it is near perfect enough for me.
People say they do not like/trust the CVT. I too like a regular Transmission over a CVT.
Then again Toyota's CVT is actually a *e-CVT* A 'Planetary Drive'. No BELTS/BANDS.
Just Gears so there is no 'Rubberbanding' when you accelerate.
Plus Toyota builds their own e-CVT's. Not outsourced like a Nissan for example.
If I did not have a Toyota to purchase I would go with Mazda for sure.
Mazda needs to make this vehicle with a Hybrid engine.

Very "planted" feel in the non-standard private roads in lots of areas which are paved, but not to DOT standards for grade and turn radius. While it is no rock crawler, does plenty well on non paved paths and pretty good in the snow.

Gas mileage in the CX-50 really depends on how you drive and what conditions you drive in. I have owned a CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus since April, 2022 and drive almost exclusively on mountain roads (with 3 miles up a dirt/gravel road to my home). Since purchase I've averaged 29.3 mpg. Over the exact same conditions I drove a CX-5 naturally aspirated 2.5 L for 5 years and got 32.4 mpg.

How are you getting 32 mpg on a CX5? You must stay under 70 mph while on the highway. I average about 26mpg combined (not going off what the car says, I calculate it by how many miles I drive divided by how many gallons it takes to fill back up). The mpg calculated on the car is typically off by 2 mpg.

    Hi Scotty,
The best review on here with the only detailed explanation of the engine.
I am in England and stumped for the new CX-5 in October 2023. It's an Exclusive Line with DAP and automatic transmission. It's the e-Skyactiv G 2.0 Mild Hybrid. It gives good mileage and performance without a turbocharger.
Previously, I had a Renault Kadjar GT-Line 2019 model and the turbocharger blew in the 23rd month of ownership.
I never want a turbocharged vehicle again unless I am building it because I have a Suzuki GSX-R 1100K turbocharged and built by myself. It's very reliable with lighter wheels, a Dyna ignition and MTC lock-up clutch.
I would have a CX-50 if they were offered here and am contemplating the new CX-60 in three years time. That's a long time away and a lot will change in that time.
I will be happy to get another CX-5 though!

Had the CX-50 been available when I moved back to the US in spring of 2022, I’d have likely gotten one. But it wasn’t out yet, so I went with a ‘21 4Runner. Given that what I got is bulletproof, will likely last two decades or more, and interest rates being what they are, I’ll likely keep the 4Runner unless I leave the US again. Given that the new 4Runners will be 4 cylinder turbos instead of over-engineered naturally aspirated 6 cylinders, I reckon it will continue to keep its value even better than it was already known to do.

I own a CX-50. Quoted HP with the turbo requires premium gas; about 30 fewer HP with regular gas. Towing a lousy 1000lbs, I only got about 14-15 MPG on a long (1700 mile) highway trip. I’ve already had some problems; heads-up display failed and had to be replaced. Wife just reported the car dying at 75mph on interstate but restarted without further issues. 20 inch wheels come standard on top trim level; I wish it had smaller wheels for better ride quality. Electronics are a pain to use; manual tuning of the radio requires multiple steps. Screen is only a touch screen on CarPlay. After 15K miles, I wouldn’t buy it again.

I don't understand the desire for turbo charged engines when we know they don't last as long as a naturally aspirated engines. I plan to buy the 2.5 S Preferred. Had you done the same, you likely wouldn't be dissatisfied with your purchase, except for the infotainment system, which is a nonissue in my opinion. Also, you would have saved $10K.

No heated steering wheel. The remote start work with an app, which doesn't always work. It usually tells us the car is unlocked even when it's not. And it turns off as soon as you open the doors. The liftgate doesn't always close or open. We've even had issues with the power door locks and windows.

The 2.5T engines in both the 5 and the 50 produce identical HP/torque. 227hp/310 ft lbs on 87 octane and 256/320 on 93 octane.

When will they have a Mazda dealership near me? Our local dealership went out 5 years ago.

I would love to have a cx50 turbo... Especially in a hybrid w/out a CVT of course. The only thing I'm skeptical over is the non irs but when test driving the cx50 it was not to noticable.

Scotty, have you heard of the cracked cylinder head issue with the Cx-5's? I believe it is related to cylinder deactivation on the non-turbo engine. I am considering the Cx-5 but am a little spooked by this issue.

Wow! Never heard of that. I’ve had two CX5s with no turbo…first was the inaugural model 2013 that was released in 2012. I traded it with 196K highway miles in 2015 (I travel 3 states for work)…never a problem with ANYTHING. I traded my 2015 CX9 for a 2021 CX5 AWD GT…love it! Only thing I’ve done is regular maintenance and I’ve got 82K miles on it. Great cars. Three Mazdas in a row after previously owning a Honda Accord..Honda Element (which I loved)..Toyota Corolla and a Tacoma. Loved ALL those cars but have the most enjoyable experience in Mazda.

My 19 cx5 has no cyl deactivation that I know of. At 50k miles all is good so far at 34 mpg hwy.

I just sold my 2002 mazda protégé 5, manual transmission with over 200k miles on it. It was still going strong! Someone in need was looking for a cheap car so I obliged.
I loved that yellow car. I had it since 0 miles back in December 2001. This is the car I want to replace it with.

Been a Toyota guy but still miss my Mazda 3 2015 when they started the koda design in 2014. Went back to Toyota and miss the zoom zoom. Both are reliable as hell.
