A trick I've discovered that's very useful when doing a tubular/sewn BO with unspun is to transfer the stitches to a smaller needle when working the BO. This opens up more space between the stitches and the needle, so the sewing yarn rubs against the stitches less. A similar effect can be achieved by sliding the stitches you are sewing around to the very tip of the left needle, where the needle is much thinner.

Thanks Jules! And yes, yes, yes to everything you said, or almost, I am an English thrower, or maybe flicker, and have no issue with knitting unspun yarn (NutiDen and our Canadian Briggs and Little roving, I have not tried Thrive). I have used NutiDen for socks and love them, some felting but not a lot. Also they have accidentally gone through the wash and came out totally wearable… I am sure that Thrive would make lovely socks as well. A bit of silk mohair for toes and heels does the trick on those hard wearing areas. Also I find it is very easy to mend socks knit with unspun yarn as the yarn just felts to itself. I absolutely love it! I would love to get some Thrive in the future, maybe shipping to Canada will be more reasonable in the future. Thank you for your great podcast and all your work.

🎉excellent video and the most concise including everything needed to be successful in handling and knitting with this type of yarn. As for washing the garments, I do as you suggest. However I let the item drain in a kitchen collender/strainer for several hours, squeeze it, and then place a towel in strainer and let it sit a while longer, moving the item several times to sit on another dry area on the towel. This way most of the water has drained out or been absorbed with very little handling…I never spin ever. Easey peeze

Thank you for this video! I could not find much about working with unspun yarn, and you give many useful tips and details that are definitely helpful. I found the inserts of video clips showing how to do things very helpful. One thing that I would have liked to see is some examples of knitting with unspun yarn, to make it possible to observe how is done. I found that it's easier for me to knit English style because I can be more careful with tensioning, rather than continental style. I would love to see how to knit continental (my favorite knitting style) with unspun. Thank you so much!

Very helpful video Jule! Once you get the hang of it, working with unspun yarn is so much fun and the thing about not needing to weave in ends is something I can only emphasize! It works and it’s a big plus, when working on garments or even doing colour work. I love this part amongst the fact that unspun (especially Thrive) smells so sheepy, is so light when wearing and still keeps you warm and cozy
For all the air it traps inside the finished fabric. And yes, it has this really cool self cleaning effect. Well put together Jule, hopefully it will be an advertisement for all unspun yarns and also for yours, for it is really great,
best quality unspun. And so are your naturally dyed spun yarns, by the way 😉

I’m new to your podcast - wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise. Excellent information throughout. I adore it for many reasons. The ability to spit splice is certainly welcome. It was particularly helpful to learn about winding and how different breeds create different unspun characteristics - this makes sense. I’m a continental knitter and enjoyed knitting my first sweater in unspun - the Rusty cardigan. The only thing I had to watch was how I held the two colors. When I work with multiple colors, I usually knit two-handed (colors in both hands - so knitting continental and English/picking and throwing). I haven’t knit with cables in unspun yet. In the future, I would love to hear more about the gauge range appropriate for unspun, particularly when working with single vs double strand. I love the lightweight yet warm nature of unspun and would like to explore various gauges. Thank you again!

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain so much about unspun yarn. I just ordered your yarn yesterday and can't wait to knit with it. I have ordered from Honer Och Eir (spelling?) before and something that has helped me learn about this yarn is to create swatches...I've done so many of them...I also have decided to make my first project with unspun which is the Boqueria basket from Vanessa Pellisa so that I can practice a lot and learn to make my stitches with consistent tension. I did have an issue with the long tail cast on so I just did the backward loop cast on but I will try your technique of felting the yarn for the long tail cast on for my next project.

Thankyou for your helpful and lovely video! I‘ve learned through my own experience but also from hearing, that it is good for any untreated wool after washing by hand as you explained, to use the highest spincycle (mine says „Schleudern und abpumpen“) because the fast movement actually makes the wool move less inside. It has always worked for me so far (toitoitoi), and also makes the long wait for your FO to dry much shorter…

Hi! Great tips! :) I just want to say (as a fiber dyer) that most front load machines in Europe don't work, even the only spin cycle throws it around, it spins, then stops, throws everything down, then sprays the stuff in it then does this many times.. :D unfortunately I've tried 3 front loaders and felted quite a bit of wool in the process.. 🙈

Thanks for sharing. I must go back and watch some of your earlier videos. I am very interested in your natural dyeing. Were you inspired by Nutiden to produce an unspun yarn? I was very fascinated with how unspun yarn is created and eventually saw something on CZcams. I have bought a mini commercial mill which I am setting up in a shed on my property but it is taking lots of time and I am trying to be patient and enjoy other peoples' passions to keep me going.

I broke all the rules on my Plutolopi sweater. I was a beginner with this yarn, I am a thrower, I knit it a Color work sweater with single ply. I also pulled from the middle of the plate. Yes I had some breakage but not many. Don't sweat it just dive in and you might be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to use. I will definitely use this yarn again.

I'm too lazy to even spit-splice. When I knit with unspun yarn I just overlap the two ends for about 10 cm, and perhaps draft them a bit to make them thinner (so that spot doesn't turn thicker), and then I just knit with both ends overlapped, without felting them together. So far I haven't had problems with those ends coming apart in finished garments.

Thank you for this video. I’m researching different info regarding unspun yarn . One of my questions is, can you use different unspun yarns in a project for color work. Ex manchelopis and plotulopi.
i would say, it’s totally possible to combine different unspun yarns in one project. I would maybe suggest to swatch as the yarn might differ in thickness depending on the blend of fibres!
Lol I have to change from continental back to English style in order to work with it. This way I am better able to “place” the yarn instead of pulling it as I do in continental knitting. I can then get quite a tight and consistent gauge without breaking it. And because I live in a hot climate I prefer to knit unspun as single strand.

Thank you so much, irina! I‘m glad to hear this was helpful :) my favorite needles for knitting with unspun are metal needles (specifically chiaogoos) because they glide more smoothly than wooden/bamboo ones and so less pressure/tension is applied to the yarn in my opinion :)

I find that throwing the yarn is very easy to tension it. There is less strain on the yarn when the yarn is not wound around fingers and breaks much less. I have knit two colorwork sweater in on strand without any breakage.
Interesting - thank you for sharing! I think it’s a very personal and intuitive thing - I personally don‘t wind the yarn around my finger, it just runs over it and I hold it with my pinky and ringfinger which makes tensioning carefully very easy for me. So interesting how people work things to their own preference! ✨
I would like to know if unspun is super warm? I live in a warm climate but want to try it.
Hi Jodi! I would say, unspun can be very warm indeed but knitted on a more open gauge, it is also incredibly lightweight and airy so I feel it could more for a lightweight, less warm garment aswell. Hope this helps!

Hi Irina! The Juist is made in two strands of nutiden - however, the particular blend I used was very fine in comparison to other blends/unspun yarns, so the gauge is more like one strand of unspun + one strand of mohair!
