Why Is A Baofeng UV-5R Not Allowed On GMRS Frequencies Or FRS Channels & What Will The FCC Do?

- The Baofeng UV-5R is a ham radio and according to the FCC you are not permitted to use the UV-5R or any ham radio to talk on GMRS channels - but, why? In this video I explain the FCC rules about using a Baofeng on GMRS and what the FCC will do if you do use your Baofeng UV-5R on GMRS frequencies.
Disclosure & clarification: NO FCC rules or regulations were violated in making this video. I did NOT transmit on my UV-5R on GMRS or any other frequencies while recording this video. Sophisticated editing techniques and CGI were used to make it appear that I used a UV-5R to transmit on a GMRS channel, but rest assured, it was all make-believe.

Thank you for supporting China and their junk radios. Did you get a kick back???
Please let us know which GMRS radios are not made in China and I will be happy to review those.
And no, I got no kickback, I make these videos just for the stupid comments.
found the sad ham
Find any radio or electronic for that matter that isn't made in China...
@@TheNotaRubiconI love dad hams:)
To make a stupid statement like that you must be Japanese.
FCC takes this very seriously , I have a friend that got 20 years just for ripping the tag of his mattress.
Probably the same guy that's been living in a plastic bubble since Prop 65 passed.
That's a bunch of Crap 99 percent of tags Say Can only be removed By owner If you own the mattress you can remove the tag you don't go to prison for removing a Tag @Larry0465
I got busted for the tag infraction myself. 10 years of lifespan was wasted. But.. it was a justifiable crime. 🙂
They hate when you removed the mattress antenna
I knew that mattress tag was a problem.
Thanks for forever changing the way I say "Baofeng".
It is time for us to have a completely unnecessary argument over the correct spelling of Boofwang
I almost want to report you for not pronouncing it boo-fwang this whole time, you damn racist.
I say "Baufén" en español 😂 So there...
Phonetically correct is "bow fung", but I like Randall's pronunciation better.
How many fars can yours talks?
You kill me. This channel is priceless. Maybe the only source of humor in ham.
Those were some pretty sophisticated editing techniques and CGI you used to make it appear that you used a UV-5R to transmit on a GMRS channel. I am highly impressed.
Well, someone smart like Randy, who would NEVER use a UV5R or any other unapproved radio on GMRS, would surely know how to edit and do CGI very well.
That is why Randy is a "CZcams Superstar professional"
He's very professional, and talented, to boot.
He even CGI’d the radios in the background to light up at the same time. Nifty little trick!
A $250,000 fine? Damn, I could take a submarine ride to the Titanic for that.
One way ride
They would have to hand deliver that fine. Please hand deliver that fine. Please please please please
Bring extra batteries so you can steer
Yep 👍
And no FCC laws in international waters! 😂
As an electronic dork all my life I have built radios and transmitted on them all my life. No one will be allowed to tell me what I can do with a radio
I have done something similar for years as well for many different projects. Really it does not matter unless you interfere with a business, emergancy service and it will not be fun and could be expensive.
Omg you will go to Gail.😭😭😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣
How does the FCC know which radio we are actually using anyway?
Does the baofeng transmit something that gives up its identity?
@@mr.viewer6988 Not sure "Gail" would like that. Or, maybe she wood?
@@mr.viewer6988I've never seen her, but I heard "Gail" is cute as a button!😂
I haven't found such an enjoyable channel in a very long time. Love what you're doing.
The sophisticated editing techniques to simulate the uv on GMRS was amazing!
I love you man! You never fail to make me smile & grin every time I watch.
New purchaser of UV-5R. I subbed for your entertaining presentation, TeeShirts, and the radio announcer timbre to your voice. Your audio is well done.
I was never interested in radios. This dude has so many funnys for so fars that now I want one. The background music is awesome. Well done.
Ordered some Uv5rs for my kid some walkie talkies not knowing what they are .....saw a few of his vids can already tell I'm gonna do some radio nerdin and go down the rabbit hole
Thanks Randy (from a Happy Ham and GMRS owner) :)
I’m here for the sad ham tears with a bucket of popcorn hitting refresh.
Thanks to Randy, I now know how to ker-chunk my local repeaters…allegedly. That makes me feel powerful as an advanced GMRS and CB operator.
@bodazaphfa makes sure when you are allegedly ker-chunking your local repeater you do it correctly.. with the Roger beep on 😂

What is the poster? I do not get it.
Well done as always NRP...Love the GAS shirt as well!
I will never call my UV5R a Baofeng ever again.... it is now called a BOOFWANG ! I love these videos !

So what radio will you get.?
Love your channel. Humorous, yet informative...a good combination. Keep it up!
Your subliminal cuts crack me up. Adding the beep tone in post processing...genius. It takes me a while to nail the frame with a pause on 0.25 slo-mo but always worth it. (Strange though it makes me crave popcorn like back in the 1960's drive-in movies). I use a lot of eye drops as I have to watch your videos without blinking so I don't miss one. I love the occasional secret codes you throw in too. Glad I was able to get one of your digital decoder rings early on. Does everyone know about this? ... Porkey Pig, glad ham.
I have been looking at getting some uv5r radios to have as shtf back up communication. I think this video just sold me on getting them no matter what.
especially with GMRS being relatively cheap, and easy to get into.
I only say switch to license-restricted HAM frequencies / other non-gmrs frequencies AFTER a SHTF scenario, because as it stands, HAM radio nerds can be a bunch of losers and generally, if they pry you for your FCC given callsign and you refuse to give it to them while transmitting on HAM bands they probably will report you, most likely because they're a bunch of nerds.
On GMRS frequencies, nobody is going to question you in the slightest, because nobody will ever listen to you in the first place besides your intended comms partners.
In shtf situation, you won't need a license so go for it
Your a GMRS Master, thanks for all the great info,Back in 04 I was a GMRS hack with a self converted uhf radio ,as a base in my Rv camp.Luv all the new equipment,Thank You, Master

Adam Schiff on the wall behind you? LOL!!!!! I love it.
I love your sense of humor
You rock brother!! Love the content man, keep it coming!
As a teen in the mid -70’s in Sweden I developed an interest for 27Mhz/11meters/CB radio. I had the best equipment I could get my hands on including a 5/8 antenna attached to the chimney and a Peiker microphone that I changed the microphone element on to improve sound. Heck, it was a fun time! 😁
The antenna was raised 6 meters, with 4 stabilizing anchor wires to hold up in a storm.
Nowadays I’m way older and need a radio for my off-roading. Thanks to you & your videos I have learned a lot about FRS/GMRS and bought two BaoFeng UV-X9S3. Yes, they are tri-band. Yes, I have programmed both to cover FRS/GMRS, because -
1. Who would ever know what radio I transmit on?
2. I live south of the US, meaning, the FCC has no jurisdiction in my new country.
…and I’ve bought the best antennas I could find for my UV-X9S3’s to provide me the best options depending on the current circumstances.
Thanks, Randy. You inspired me to go over the top nuts on my re-discovered interest for good radios.
-Keep up the good work! 😁
LoL - Great episode ! And, I slowed the video around the disclaimer Easter Egg so I could freeze frame & read it :) You are such a Tease :)
Good details keep up the good work !!!!
Hope I get to meet you in person some day. Love your way of thinking.
100% true, love the Roger beep at the very end.
I own two of those uv-5r's programmed for GMRS and FRS for Daily use awesome radios.

And not registered with the gubmint? 😯
Is there anyway for anybody to find out your transmitting from a baofeng on a gmrs channel?
@@anthonydantona8672 yes and no. You can triangulate any transmitting frequency that's broadcast. So if someone really wanted you they could track you down and see what you're using up close. If you're not being a prick and/or tying up a frequency band and using a call sign nobody is going to care.. Baofengs give up a bit of spurious transmissions, meaning they also transmit on a few frequencies up and or down from the frequency you are intending to transmit on . That being said those emissions are a bit worse on a Baofeng than a dedicated GMRS radio of another brand. So if someone wanted they could make a pretty good guess what you were doing and track you to bust you if they wanted to, but that's very rare and nobody has ever been charged with using a Baofeng on ANY unauthorized channel as long as it doesn't interfere with police or fire departments. I've used Baofengs to talk on FRS, GMRS, HAM and MURS for years and never had anyone say anything to me.
@@anthonydantona8672 yes. But nobody cares as long as you're not causing problems to fire or emergency units.
Raise your hand if you use your UV5R on GMRS 👋
Xts 5000 gang and xpr 7550 on frs. Gotta get the range when annoying construction flaggers.
U R GOIN 2 PRISONS GOOD SIR
You have to change the antenna on the uv5r to receive and transmit on gmrs and or frs???
you dont HAVE to change the antenna, but an antenna tuned for GMRS would work better.. That said, many people I know use their UV-5R for close (less than 1mile) comms on GMRS with the stock antenna and it works just fine..
👋🏻
Radio daddy is back with another banger.
I like the suit you have on in that background picture. You clearly mean business.
Another great video, Randy. I love my boo fwang!
As long as you have the Roger beep on your golden.
Great work sir. Jeep on.
I appreciate the Rush reference. 😢 Miss him.
The best part about using a UV-5R on GMRS is that when the FCC rush at you and say "WE DEMAND TO INSPECT THAT RADIO!!!", you can just boot it into a storm sewer or drop it into the Ohio River and say "What radio?" then buy another 8-pack of them for $27.99 or whatever.
I bought 2 baofeng uv-5r radios, they are about to arrive with this video, I know that I can use it freely but respecting the rules
Love your work
I love Randy’s humor lol “Boofwang” is what I’m calling it from now on. Subscribed. Any chance of reviewing the Persistent Systems MPU5 radio and it’s “smart radio” system compared to other radios?
That's actually the correct pronunciation. It got changed a bit when it hit the overseas market.. but that never made it correctly pronounced.
Lmao. I just love your videos. Appreciate your time putting this together for us.
Those dead-cuts are the best part of these videos, l chuckle evra’time!

Fun fact: slow down the playback speed to see the subliminal messages and Randy sounds like he's had one too many adult beverages!
I’m not worried bout the FCC ….as a matter of fact my buddy hunter and I were talking to the big guy and he guaranteed me I was ok to use any boofwang .
Good question and good answer... my kinda show
Thank you!
The fact that there are rules on what types of radios and on which frequencies we can use them is crazy. Paying for a license is crazy too.
I can't believe you actually transmitted on GMRS with a UV-5R. (roger beep)

Do you have a video that gives a rundown on applying all the right settings and frequencies for gmrs?
The nod to Rush was perfect. Thank you, (typed by my formerly taco filling stained fingers)
😂😂😂😂. I love your approach and humor. Though i almost vomited in my mouth when I saw what looked to be Adam Schiff on your wall..i enjoyed the vid. Was that an easter egg?
Hi! Were the Guberment, and we're here to help you.
the FCC won't do jack shit about using it on GMRS.
Yah, thats why I said pretty much exactly that in the video. You should try watching it.
It will be fine. They have to come for your guns first. And your gas stove. And diesel engines. First, before the radios.
@@LatitudeSkyDon't know about that
@KLWWorldNews1yep. Name the parameters.
@@LatitudeSky here in New York they're coming for coal fired pizza ovens; I'm not kidding.
I love your videos. The uv5R is a decent radio. It is meant to operate on amateur radio frequencies only. That said. I don't believe that it cannot be used as a GMRS radio as it applies to the United States. Users enjoy this radio and as far as I am concerned, if it used for GMRS?.... I think there are bigger fish to fry than the Baofengthing. I will always keep a bright RED Baofengthing.... in case I might need to help someone in an (emergency) that is not an amateur radio person. Off the amateur radio bands. That said I I will follow the rules.
It is meant to be used on every frequency that it will operate on. That's how the Chinese designed it to operate. Does it comply with US law? Who cares?
You crack me up! But seriously I have 2 Baofengs and cannot understand them at all. Will keep trying though.
I am disappointed there is no pinned comment from an "expert" yet. :-(
Sometimes it can take a day or two for the idiots to come out of the woodwork.

Love all the videos and reviews.......Your reviews help me decide to purchase the UV-5G's and an a official GMRS license, so I'm legal. I actually got from Scout Lookout near Angels Landing to Watchman Campground in Zion National Park, almost 6 miles, with them. I found a deal on a UV-5R so I got it to play with, but I have a questions about it. When I push the PTT key to talk after the key is released the radio makes a buzzing noise for a brief second. If I hold the end of the antenna then it is quiet, my guess it has something to do with the impedance of the antenna. Any thoughts on how to correct it? Thanks in advance.
Thank you
Randy. Can’t remember a review of the Baofeng GM-15 Pro GMRS. It seems to be a good radio with usb c charging port. Water resistance…. and so on. What do you think about it? Would like to se a complete review from you.
I have a box of 6 UV5R radios that are from 2018. I just unpacked them the other day. Weird part is 3 are taller then the other 3. It’s time for me to get these things up and running. Time to get my licenses.
I have 2...I paid for them, I own them, and I will push any button on MY radio I want, whenever I want. Sad hams can go pound sand if they don't like it.
Cool story. I bought a car and I own it. I’ll drive on any side of the road or sidewalk that I want.
Randy, is that a picture of Uncle Adam in the backdrop, is it 😁
It would have been interesting to see Randy perform the factory reset unlock routine on the Tidradio GM-5R right after saying the GMRS rules are baked into the radio. I don't have one, so I have no idea if it'd work, but it would be interesting no matter the result.
I'm not entirely sure what gmrs baofeng I have but it's the ones he's reviewed on his channel (UV-5G?)
You can literally just put ham frequency into the radio with chirp and it will transmit
I know this wasn't entirely what you were asking but I thought I'd share
Is there a hack to unlock the GM-5R ?
@@jbr84tx yes.
@@jbr84txI think you just use a cable
@@xexat I have THAT radio (Baofeng UV-5G/Raddiodity UV-5X) and it does NOT transmit on HAM, it is locked to GMRS
Hi Randy, Great video and very true, its a joke because I know people who use ham radios everyday on GMRS with no issues, including Motorola 5000 radios on GMRS. You can hear the chirp tone when they transmit and You know wright away that there Motorola radios.
They've been using them for Years. As long as You dont cause interference and the radio is set wright. No one is going to know or even care. Im sure the FCC knows that this is being done, They just dont want to know about it or have their noses rubbed in it in my
Opinion. Thanks for the education and Facts.
I only use Motorola gear for 2M/440 and wouldn't hesitate to use one on GMRS. What chirp are you talking about on your buddy's Motorola? That MDC1200 squwak/data burst? Lots of other radios are set up to use that, not just /\/\. You can turn it off in the CPS too - I don't have it enabled on any of mine. Though it is sometimes fun to turn it on just to piss off uptight hams who flip out when they hear it, claiming (falsely) "THAT'S ILLEGAL!!!"
If the country goes belly up I doubt there will be any FFC goons around to police the perceived issue. LOL
There won't be any teachers around to help you get that GED, either. Sad.
@@waytospergtherebrowhy would you need a GED then lmao
Well…you’re right. I don’t like this content. But…I do LOVE it! Thank you for elaborating on this topic (that I asked you about in ‘another’ video of yours)! As they say in the big city: “You da man!!!!”
Also….Tidradio TD-H8? Thoughts?
Since 1996 I have been using all types of radios, Alinco, Yeasu, Vertex and some were modified, used on Emergency frequencies, GMRS, HAM and ..... wait... ive never even seen the FCC holy cow!!!
I found out what the "band" button is for. When on FM radio, it changes between the lower and upper range of the FM band. The A/B button is wrong in the manual.
We are literally choking to death on overbearing government regulations. It’s ridiculous. I love unelected bureaucrats who pull arbitrary restrictions right out of their ass. We all do it, and nobody cares. Live your life - f@ck the restrictions
I used mine on MURS last week.
The man never blinks.
Love your nod to the late great Maha-Rushie!
Hopefully the FCC will have their own SWAT team in the future to catch UV5R users on gmrs.
Maybe they could borrow some from the IRS
Those radio cops play hardball!

With the current regime in the white house, don't count it out 😂
They already have the Radio Emergency Tactical Action Response Detachment.
LOl for the quick flash of disclaimer at 1:31 :)
My favorite part of that radio is the pencil (neck) slim antenna
I love your shirt. ❤
Randy, I use GMRS when my family and I are jeeping and camping and use CB when interstate traveling is there like a all in one radio I can use instead of having 2 radios in my jeep?
I kinda figure that the whole reason to make specifications for a certified radio is to make sure the bands are used responsibly. If someone is smrt enough to configure their UV-5R to cooperate with the guidelines set forth I feel the FCC turns a very blind eye. But they do want their license fees.
I enjoy your videos and love your sense of humor keep it up. sad hams 😂😂😂
I'm just here for the expert comments 😮
Legend
I've had this discussion with others. And they go on and on about GMRS certification. But there is this little phrase that I read in part 95.1761(c) that says "... unless such transmitter is also certified for use in another radio service for which the frequency is authorized and for which certification is also required..." which to me means if say a radio was certified prior to the GMRS frequencies being carved out then that radio is legal. The UV-5R was certified in 2012, the CFR certifying GMRS radios was done in 2017. At least that is the information I could find. Even the FCC press release said they did not want to ban legacy radios because so many were in use. Please prove me wrong.
Thank you for the legal advice.
Mr. Rubi-not-con, ham, turkey, gm, RS with or without stuffing?
Does the gm-5r allow use of chirp or other software? Just wondering what the real potential might be. Boof Wang, I like it.
No. All of the channels are pre-programmed. They usually come with FRS and GMRS frequencies.
What brand radios would you suggest for walkie to walkie talk?, mainly using for camping trips, mountains and rough terrain.
You should watch this video, which answers that exact question: czcams.com/video/uSZ3giJX554/video.html
I always thought not being type certified for multiple radio services was just a way to keep the costs down. In all honesty the gmrs boofangs are probably the same radio inside as the ham blaufungs.
The GMRS UV-5R is 100% the same on the inside as the ham version. The only difference is the programming/firmware and a type-acceptance sticker from the FCCs.
Dude great humor ! I really enjoy the platform. I got this type of radio and A GRms radio just in case of disaster. I don’t know shit about them so I had a young man ham radio nut program it for me. I still don’t know shit but I listen to noaa !
