  • My wife is a freshly minted private pilot and wants to learn to fly our RV9A. If I am going to help her learn I need to get used to flying from the right seat! Here is my first right seat flight in our RV

Enjoyed you sharing your experience here. I am only a 80hr PPL (trained in C172) but went on a familiarization flight with my CFI in a PA-28 sitting right seat. While he was flying he said "you got flight controls" geezs it was such an awkward and humbling experience, I felt like I knew nothing about flying all the sudden. Next I got in and flew left seat, felt like I had been flying that plane all my life. Really helped me appreciate the skills of my CFI seeing him transition LS / RS with no impact on his piloting abilities. Hoping after a few hundred hours I will start to learn flying Right Seat but definitely am not rushing that skill as a new pilot.

Nice job broadening those horizons at only 80 hours! Had I tried that so early in my flying I do not think it would have gone too well! Thanks for the thoughts! Blue skies!

I flew right seat on Friday in a buddy's Commanche (he was PIC) and it was bizarre for sure. I couldn't see the ball which was disconcerting -- especially with 400hp. I like that you can switch full PFD in your panel. Also that your wife is now PPL; very cool.

I imagine that thing needs a whole lot of right rudder!! Thanks for checking out the video!!

The main thing is in my view that you tried, landed, walked away with a bunch of learnings to try again another day. Weather was fair, Ground Effect didn't look too bad but I echo what you are saying re RS Flying. The Muscle Memory is completely different but you pushed through the fear and anxiety of doing it. Keep up the good work and I look forward to watching your next vid on subject and know you will nail it soon! Happy landings.....

other than that centerline jumping to the left of you on the first two they looked pretty good to me. I'm a little more concerned with some of those engine monitor readings.......

I’ve tried flying my home built from the right seat… it’s only 24 inches but man it’s different!!! If nothing else the eye line and visual reference points in the flare are WAY different. Good job stretching your skills and comfort zone!
