- On January 30th, 2010, the Phoenix Coyotes officially retired defencemen Teppo Numminen's jersey #27 and inducted him into the Ring of Honor.
Numminen was drafted twenty-ninth overall in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft by the Winnipeg Jets, and moved to North America in 1988 to play for the Jets. He moved with the team as it became the Phoenix Coyotes before the 1996-97 season. He played in the NHL All-Star Game in both 1999 and 2000. After fifteen seasons playing for the Winnipeg/Phoenix organization, Numminen was traded to the Dallas Stars in July, 2003, for Mike Sillinger. Numminen took a break from hockey during the 2004-05 NHL lockout, then signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Sabres.
On November 13, 2006, Numminen played his 1252nd game in the NHL and in the process, set a record for most NHL games played as a European-trained player, surpassing Jari Kurri. At the time of his retirement, Numminen was the last player from the 1986 NHL Entry Draft still playing in the NHL.
After signing a one-year contract for the 2007-08 NHL season, Numminen was forced to undergo open heart surgery before the start of the season. Numminen was suspended by the Buffalo Sabres when it was discovered he needed heart surgery. Numminen was able to return to action for the final game of the Sabres' 200708 season on April 5, 2008.
On August 8, 2008, Numminen re-signed with the Buffalo Sabres.
He was the leader among active NHL players who played the most games without winning the Stanley Cup: 1,372 at the end of the 2008-09 season.
Teppo Numminen announced his retirement on August 4, 2009. The 41-year old finished his NHL career with 117 goals and 520 assists for 637 points in 1372 NHL games. At the time of his retirement, his 1372 NHL games were the most by a European-born and trained player; this record would be broken by Nicklas Lidström.
On January 30, 2010, the Phoenix Coyotes retired Numminen's #27. During his 14 seasons for the franchise (including their previous incarnation as the Winnipeg Jets) he played 1,098 games, a franchise record. His 534 points are also a franchise record for defencemen.

Joten myös kisakatsomo kiittää sun suorituksia!
Kiitos!
Class act
bobster if you really cared at all about Teppo, who was one of the most loyal Jets ever to play the game, you wouldn't have brought that whole issue up. Thank you Teppo, you are the man.
If anyone's number is deserving of being retired it's this guy. Total class act. Been there through the good (was actually there when Winnipeg won their last playoff series in 1987) and the bad (everything since then!). At least Dallas also had the class to leave the North Stars retired numbers retired.
@stlfatman Amen, brother...
Even as a New Jersey Devils fan, I want nothing more than to see the Coyotes succeed as a franchise, both on and off the ice.
The Desert Dogs will NEVER die.
Hey pacmanghostx... THANK YOU! Finally someone not from Phoenix who does NOT want them moved back to Canada. Thanks for your support!
And by the way, I notice a lot of you are whining about PHX retiring/honouring Winnipeg's players... it's kinda the same franchise, just a different city/name. If they didn't honour them and just blew them off, you'd be even more upset.
Thanks again, pacmanghostx.
Teppo Winnipeg
congratz teppo miss you in Buf Go Sabres
That's cool. I'm a Blues fan primarily, but I have a soft spot for the southern-market teams, especially Phoenix. I don't think it's fair, all the heat they get from northerners. When I was a boy, I didn't care where a team was, as long as they can play. I think the Yoties have proven they can, eh. ^_^
BTW, congrats to the Devils' great season. I love Zajac and Kovy!
@stlfatman No worries, I've always had a soft-spot for the Coyotes, and they've been one of my preferred franchises from the West for quite some time (only behind the Calgary Flames). Even as a little kid, I remember taking a liking to the hockey club from Phoenix, even though I was brought up an NJD fan.
I'll be sure to root hard for the Desert Dogs during the playoffs, however, I'll be forced to turn on them if they make the Finals against my Devils. ;-)
@MrNWA4Life It was a choice by the owner of that franchise to start over (the Hurricanes, however, have never issued #9, which was worn by Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe).
@stlfatman Yeah, man...
And thanks for the compliment... Actually, the game I just got back from (Islanders @ Devils) at the Rock in Newark was a 7-1 Devils win, and Zajac got four assists and Kovy got a goal and two assists, coincidentally. :)
In Finnish his nickname is 'Cast Iron' defender.
@bobster231 @bobster231
Hey jerk, at least they still honor Hull & Steen and decided to honor Hawerchuk. How many teams that moved (Quebec/Colorado, Hartford/Carolina) continued to honor the numbers that were retired in the cities they were leaving?
i dont rememebr seeing that up ther i went to some games this year in march
over 20 years in NHL :)
That say it all. And hes number is frozen.
ring of honor is different.
Oh, that's right, neither Colorado or Carolina have! That shows a lot a lot of class by the Coyotes and zero class by the Avs & Canes (in Carolina's case, with that douchebag owner, I wouldn't expect anything less). All I hear from the video is that Numminen was inducted in the Coyotes Ring of Honor. Never did I hear anything regarding his number actually being retired.
@bobster231 The Phoenix Coyotes ARE the Winnipeg Jets. Same organization, different city.
And BTW, Hull and Steen's number were retired while the team was still in Winnipeg, and keeping those numbers retired when the team moved to Arizona was an act applauded by many hockey purists. Additionally, Hawerchuk was remembered as a Jet, and as such, no other team was going to retire his number, so the Coyotes decided to recognize a former great of THEIR franchise.
Also, Numminen played as a Coyote.
Looks like our neighbour...
@relmofyou Oh your hilarious, You must be an expert on World economy, using statistics from 10 years ago, damn you're a smart man.
Do coyotes fans even know who dale hawerchuck, thomas steen and bobby hull even are?
Teppo Numminen is the shit
