      Paul, as a former service member, you should know that under NATO doctrine, ANY use of nuclear weapons is considered Strategic escalation. Hence, while people colloquially differentiate based on size, military planners do NOT make a distinction.

      Putin is gambling, and will go right up to the brink with his saber-rattling. He will use nuclear weapons if he can get away with it, say if the US pulls out of NATO. He would even detonate an electromagnetic pulse nuke in space above the US to take out our electrical infrastructure if no lives would be lost (actually there would be, as fly-by-wire airliners fall out of the sky). Putin could nuke European cities and a president Trump will say "not our problem."

      1. Russia cannot dictate Ukrainian policy, they're not an empire ruling over vassals like they wish they were.
      2. Joining a defensive alliance against Russian aggression does not impact Russia in any way except increasing the consequences for invading their neighbors, which they shouldn't be doing anyway

    Things must not be going well for Russia if Putin is making nuclear threats. He usually does this when things go badly. Considering Russia has been advancing, they must be overstretched more than we realize. This could mean that the front lines are about to stabilize for Ukraine. If that's the case, this is gonna be a rough summer for Russia.

      Putin is extending Zelensky's presidential term, another own goal for Putin wanting a different government in Kyiv. lol

    If your neighbor threatens to burn your house down if you keep parking on "his" street, what are the chances that parking somewhere else will end the threats? Putin definitely has issues but I don't think that he is stupid. If my threatening neighbor approached my house with a can of gas and a lighter, he should know that he won't walk back without suffering serious injury.

    The Russian Federation can't even afford to build passenger planes, I would be willing to bet that the majority of their nuclear arsenal is in complete ruin and disrepair. They may have a HANDFUL of maintained warheads that MIGHT be operationally worthy.

    You can try to put a wet blanket over all you want to but Emmanuel macron straight up said that he is thinking about sending troops over there there's no ambiguity to it it's on his mind if they were to ask macron would probably send them as far as Cameron David Goes he knows good and well he gave them the green light to use those weapons on Russian there is no ambiguity in this and I can guarantee you that's exactly how Putin sees it

    My only issue is, almost every "expert" said Putin won't invade Ukraine he is to rational. So I do think of Putin thinks he can get away with it he will do it. So a strong condemnation from all countries is vital.

    It seems unlikely Russia will stop until they are at least closer to the gold, lithium or other significant precious metals & minerals. Deposits that are east and west of the Dnieper river. Some precious resources start West of Luhansk, Donetsk & North of Zaporizhznia Oblasts. Currently they've only really obtained some of the countries oil and coal which is already common to Russia, but the more precious items are closer to the river. The country has some of the largest deposits in all of Europe.

    The largest fuel exporter in Europe started a war and a few days afterward their infantry vehicles were stuck on the road for lack of gas. Somehow I'm not as worried about their nuclear arsenal as I should be.

      Yeah I've watched videos of the detailed and highly technically advanced the maintenance and upkeep that is involved with nukes. It's crazy. Based on Putins difficulty producing anything obviously advanced I find it tough to believe he's still keeping old Soviet Era nukes functional. Of course we have to plan like they do work but I'm not confident they work at all.

    Putin might want to check to see if any of his nukes would actually work, given the abysmal results of the rest of his arsenal and troops in this war. He wouldn't want one of them to go off while the aircraft is on the runway or the missile is still on the launcher.

      I wouldn't bet on that though. Let's avoid an actual nuclear war if possible. Even if half of Russian nukes are duds, that's still roughly 3,000 nukes, which would still result in tens of millions of civilian casualties.

    There’s a podcast from Times radio with a gent from Institute for the Study of War who has a good argument that while Russia could potentially use tactical nukes, but they couldn’t exploit the battlefield even if they did because to do suit up and head into a mushroom cloud takes real elite soldiers with high morale and belief in their leaders - Al these elite units have been decimated and downgraded

      Actually Russia rotates their troops, they took avdivka much faster than previous urban objectives.
      They now have an ever increasing battle experienced army.
      Russians always learn how to fight over time, adapt. They are also training and massing 2 new field armies in Russia.
      People always underestimate Russians.
      Just like Hitler and napoleon.
      Tactical nukes will fly hitting rear military areas.
      Russia has been fighting against dozens of countries arsenal's and having made initial mistakes are slowly pounding Ukraine into rubble.
      They'll be nothing left of Ukraine, just like Berlin in 1945.
      If Russia can't have Ukraine, no one will.

    A conventional military advance within the scope of current pattern of warfare is not an escalations. An escalation necessarily means a broadening the scope of the conflict. If Russia actually started using Nukes or uses conventional forces to attack Britain for example, then that would be an escalation by the Russians

    Today the SBU reported the arrest of two officers from the State Security Department of Ukraine who were allegedly preparing an assassination attempt on Führer Zelenskyy. According to the Strana publication, we are talking about two colonels: Andrei Guk was detained in Koncha-Zaspa, and the second - by the name of Derkach (name not given) - in the Sumy region, where he went for Easter. The detainees were allegedly supposed to launch missile attacks on Zelensky and a number of high-ranking Ukrainian officials. This story reminds me of Claus von Stauffenberg, a German army officer who is best known for his failed attempt on 20 July 1944 to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the Wolf's Lair.

    The US leadership thinks Putin would never use these weapons. This could be a big miscalculation. If he uses one in Ukraine and claims it is to counter NATO assistance to Ukraine. What would NATO do if Putin uses one or 2 tactical nukes? Would we retaliate on Russian soil triggering a world ending nuke war? We would not be able to response without risking a greater conflict.
