  • Welcome to the ultimate in easy to use digital picture/movie/poster/video frames! The next version of Dynaframe is here, and this video will show the features and how to get it!
    / geektoolkit
    The files are now published for the first release this month. Tutorials and Q and A will follow shortly.
    Here's the gesture sensor...please note that currently this is the only model that is supported, but it was chosen for a low price, and ease of install

    For the compute system, it needs to be a raspberry pi 4, 2GB or higher. I test on a 2GB so you should be fine there. I recommend an aluminum case as this can push the pi hard, and so you'll want fans or cooling to keep things running well. If you don't have a setup this is one that has all the bells and whistles with a variety of colors:

    This is rad. I have a RPi somewhere, a bunch of monitors and big dreams of making a smart mirror, but this gets my vote. Kudos to you for making it easy to get. I usually dislike Patreon and I hate that everything these days is subscription based, but this feels right, and good value. Can't wait to get it up and running.

      @geektoolkit  Před rokem +4

      Thank you! Please note that it’s not a subscription…you can sign up for one month, get it and bail and it won’t stop working. The Patreon is a way for me to build a community, and support those that are invested, and use the money to pay for hosting which helps with things like making an auto updater. I hate subscriptions myself, so this was a compromise to allow for easy access.
      That being said I and the team work hard at providing updates monthly and providing features. I think you’ll see that it’s moved well beyond this video in many ways. That’s all thanks to the community working to help drive features and improvements.

    TOOO Cool! I've been working with personal digital frames for the last 5 years or so and they all have some limitiations that drive me nutz. I installed the most recent Dynaframe in about 30 minutes and it resolved almost every one of my issues :)
    Looking forward to usint Dynaframe Pro and possibly even contributing some of my art (AI generated art, Plotagraph, and other strange and wonderful tools). So thanks so much for your amazing work on this project.

    You had answered a few questions for me in the past, I appreciate that - I am looking at using Dynaframe 2 or pro (what ever the latest is, even if its paid). I am looking at doing a DIY Raspberry Pi connected to display approach as I wish to use networking cables rather than wifi. Is there a preferred Pi device (client device connected to the back of the frame) / OS version, etc. I need to account for or will just any Pi do? I wish to use your server backend in a rack setup I have and have it connect to the Pi on each display via networking cables ran through my walls.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  Před rokem

      Sounds like a great setup! The pro version is the latest, it's $5 for the patreon but you can cancel if you want after you get the software (and if you stay on you get more features, we're constantly adding more). For a pi ideally you want a pi4, but we have made it work on pi3B+'s (and just heard the pi400 works but you have to hide a keyboard then). The patreon has a discord and people help each other out for setting up NAS servers and such so that the pictures can be local on a network and all served to the frames. Frame sync is currently broken but being worked on for the latest builds (but you would have access to all the builds, so the one shown in this vidoe is available too)

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  Před 2 lety

      We are still working to optimize it for 4k, the transitions are a bit rough. If you turn them off then 4k should be doable on a pi4, but barely. I find that a 1080p IPS Monitor looks best, though I currently use 32" Vizio TVs which work great as well and have built in speakers.

    @sergon2000 Před 2 lety +1

    Hi!! First of all, congrats for this product, it looks great! I just miss one thing: It'd be nice to have the option to show some information from the current picture, specifically from the metadata. I developed a much simpler photo frame script in python and it basically shows the date and the place where the picture was taken. It reads the lat and long from the metadata and retrieves the location data by making a call to the Google API. Obviously a Google API key is needed to make this calls and in order to minimize them (and avoid costs), the responses are locally stored so the calls are only made the first time the pictures show up.
    I don't know if all this make sense to you and it could be added to Dynaframe. For me this feature is essential and I won't hesitate to migrate to Dynaframe in case you guys end up adding it, but that is up to you of course :)
    Thanks and congrats again!

Maybe I am doing everything wrong, but I can only see pictures if I put it on the raspberry pi picture folder. I have tried your older versions, and I can't get the external hard drive to work. • @geektoolkit

    Many a stupid question but how good is the support for different screen aspect ratios I'm thinking of building a frame around 4:3 or 3:2 and some strange 2k res screen or must I stay true to common resolutions and aspect ratios like 16:9 with fhd or 4k

    • @geektoolkit

But if you search for 'mount NAS linux' or 'Mount NAS raspberry pi' you should get some ideas. For Dynaframe, you can make any directory appear in the playlist section..so if you mount it to /mnt/myNAS you'd add that to Dynaframe. I need to make a video on this :)

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Wes! Ok lets see there's alot there, I'll try to answer it all:
      For number of displays...it's honestly probably 'alot' as far as how the system works....I have done it across 5 successfully but I suspect 10 or more would work, if not 50. The main thing is you'd want to have 5 seconds or so between picture transititions, and you want the clocks to be in sync. My plan is to have my entire house have these with the ability to sync to holidays and such (Haloween could be really fun, chritmas could be really cool). For my demo, I did 3 just because I realized I could set that up and sync the images across. The hardest part honestly for me is splitting artwork to work across them.
      The displays are just raspberry pis on TVs....so if you have second HDMI Ports (like most tvs and monitors do) then you could plug whatever you want into the other ports. My side ones actually rotate on the wall mounts so I could have it look like 3 horizontal tvs...but it's up to you on how you'd want to set things up.
      The premade images are available now on the patreon! 5 bucks gets you an image and a month of support, behind the scenes, art packs as I get time to make them. In the meantime I'm always adding more to this and have an exciting list of stuff I'm working on (kodi syncing, a video game mode, being able to use objects to sync the frames, etc). going to take some months, but it's all doable and happening!

Are the individual files of the playlist supposed to show up in a list under the + of the playlist folder so you can pick a specific image? for me, this list of files doesn't show...
    Also, if all i'm using this for, is to display relatively low-res movie poster images, would the dynaframe pro version run on my Pi3b ?

      So this isn't built in yet, but it's something that you can add if you're familiar with basic python and how to read a GPIO and motion sensor. We'd liek to have it built in in the future, but we have quite a backlog of features/bugs we're working through. The linux OS is raspbian underneath and is open to do what you'd like, so that can be added (We may even have a doc on it). Long term plan though is to make this easier/built in

Even pi 3s don’t transition fully smoothly unless we do some tricks. The pi zero 2w that is like a pi3 is interesting but we just as a team have so many other things users want.

      Ah good point my next one will include that. For the pi it’s a 1080p output, though we have had some run it at 4k. Transitions aren’t as smooth at 4k and video typically doesn’t work on a pi. The reality is a pi can technically output 4k, but manipulations at 4k are dodgy, and codec support for videos is abysmal. I'm a "budding" writer of children's stories and was thinking of reading stories on CZcams for children's entertainment. I'm well along in the process of creating a "magic" book that I could magically change different stories through a window opening in the front cover of the book with a digital picture frame viewed through the window. This way, when I open the book, I can start reading a different story each time without having to change books. I was thinking of getting something like a digital picture frame that would be hidden inside the book with a very short movie that would magically introduce each story and when opened I could then read that story. Your videos in Dynaframe, opens all kinds of possibilities not only for the book but also for the stories. I can envision actually bringing these stories to life when they are read. I could really use your help if this is something that could/would work. Can we collaborate to see if this is feasible?

Is the Pi 4 usually about 3x more power consumption than the 2 zero w? Used some calculators I've seen online and it's around $5 vs $15 for power consumption it seems (a year for nearly 24/7 use). If that's the case I probably won't worry about the cost of power and just get the Pi 4 if it's such an issue regarding throttling with the zero.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  Před 2 lety

      I think those numbers are accurate conceptually. There’s a lot of variables from load on the cpu to cost of electricity. The pi4 with Dynaframe is GPU accelerated so less cpu is used…it goes from 60% to under 10% CPU. Also your monitor is your biggest power draw followed by wifi usually. So you can do things like use a more power efficient screen and a wired connection to help. Also smart plugs to turn things off can cut usage from 24 hours to 8, so another 1/3 power cut. Lots of options. Someone in the Dynaframe pro discord just calculated running Dynaframe at about $2 a month. We want to do more studies before widely publicizing that but it’s another data point

      I'll work on an update video after our next major feature push. We've been working on the software the entire time, there are a ton of new features and bugfixes, but also some major work to do to get things up to date and add pi5 support. We have 300 patreons and have had over 1000 people join and get the software and love it and use it for various projects. I'm focused on them right now, and when I get the next major update done I'll update the videos and work to do monthly updates from there. Some of the features that have been added is an update system, animated gif support, overlays, exif data, sorting of the playlists, performance increases, ability to stream web videos (youtube and such), a plugin system, font uploads...few more I'm missing. But we're in a place where we want to update to the new wayland based OS and then we'll market it heavily

      @@sejalgpatelphoto For Dynaframe 2 if it's downloaded and compiled it can be run on windows, but it's REALLY rocky....I started down that path because I could cross compile it but turns out that trying to support 3 platforms was well beyond what I had time for, and so I had to focus on what most people wanted. For instance on windows if you launch a video file it launches media player and then full screens it which is not nearly as smooth as on a pi currently. Also though if you compile it yourself you could run it in an x86 version of linux ona pc and have amazing performance most likely...but then you're trying to hide a full pc somewhere :/

    I don’t know if it’s your video, but those transitions don’t look anything close to buttery smooth. From your product, I am seeing is a bit of Samsungs MagicInfo, Display Fusion, and things a NAS can do. Why use a QR code when you can just bookmark the website? It’s almost a break in the experience having to walk up to one device and take a picture in order to access its GUI. How far does a person have to be in order for it to register hand gestures? Just not sure what your showing can’t be done via other means/software. Just my opinion.
    I’m sure you deleted my other message a while back on one of your other videos cause I linked my setup. I run a quad/PLP setup, used for gaming and movies and stuff.
    Still, kudos for running a PLP setup, most people are still new to the concept.

      I’ll reply back in more detail when at my desk but I want you to know I didn’t delete your comment and wouldn’t do that…but Facebook will mark it as spam if there’s a link and that could slip by me.
      Thankyou for the kind words, having something I wrote in my spare time compared to a 600 dollar software from Samsung is flattering. I’m showing it in a PLP setup for the video but really the setups are all separate nodes (it’s three separate raspberry pis connected over the network)…so one could be downstairs in my house or another room or wherever for instance.
      The price of this is the raspberry pi…it’s a bring your own screen solution designed for consumers and hobbyists. The smoothness is not going to reflect to a critical eye since this is 30fps, but in person I’ve had great feedback on the smoothness.
      You’re right you absolutely can bookmark the page. Or ip scan for it. Or a million other things. But for consumers who power down the units and don’t know how to set static IPs, it’s a handy way to handle the DHCP server changing the IP on them. QR codes don’t require a photo they work immediately when the camera gets the image, and saves them from entering an IP. If you have other suggestions as to them, for now this is something I’m trying out.
      I appreciate the feedback and hope that helps understand what I’m trying to do. This isn’t meant to compete with Samsung as much as give people a fun way to display artwork and movie postwrs
