While Rickles was not a top act like Martin & Lewis in their heyday in '55,; however you contrast $15,000 a night at the Copa then ... and surely Rickles in the 70's was getting close to that in night club appearances. Ok for the "fun" of it $8000 - and yrly Jerry gets thrown a hockey puck/bone . A supermarket could have done better LOL

You must watch more don rickles videos to understand the act that he always puts on. The outstanding art of his comedy was that he acted as a person that was not him. He just put it all on. It was just an act. Do you know laurel and hardy the most famous of all comedy duos there was. Stan Laurels act was to play the stupid person that can get very angry, that is easily offended, quite vulnerable and so on whilst Oliver hardy played the other one that thinks that he's much more clever and smart than Stan and that he thinks he is like a father to Stan and Stan like his little son. And always the funny thing is that at the end he is as stupid as stan because as Stan he has no control over his temper and is as vulnerable as Stan, is quick to anger, just a tiny bit more stable and tolerant and patient. Now I described you the character of Stan and Ollie briefly. Don rickles portraid just such a character. His character roasted celebrities and said the meanest things about them. Some things were pure nonsense like the attempt to strangle Jerry in the hospital, but other things were true, things about celebrities that everyone knows from newsmagazines and newspapers like struggle with alcohol or marriage and divorcing and whatever. And about the negative things his act, his role complains about much and is saying very mean things. But always always always at the end of the roasting, at the end of his comic play he turns into himself and tells very fine and beautiful and honest and heartfelt things about the poeple he roasted. At the end of his act he turns into the real himself into the real human don rickles who is a real gentleman that ignores all the faults of the celebrities he roasts and emphathizes just what is special and unique about someone and he's telling anyone from the bottom of his heart that he loves and admires the addressed person and mostly he even is telling them: may God bless you. Because he his famous for this: playing a mean person full of bitterness, full of criticizing others for their faults and weaknesses and at the end of this acting showing his real face of a loving and caring gentleman. That's why he has the nickname mister warmth.
