I don't think it matters. I've heard he quit. I heard he was fired. I was heard he was forced out. I heard he was asked to leave. I heard that new management was doing stuff and the end result was that they squeezed out Sammy as a result. Alex isn't speaking out on this and may never. Sammy has been extremely vocal about just about everything. My thoughts: Sammy was let go, probably to have more money stay within the band(which I think at this point had Michael Anthony as nothing more than a sideman). Sammy continues to have a good solo career as well as band career, so he's clearly recovered from his tenure with Van Halen.
In interviews in 1996(including the 1996 Roth rejoin MTV press conference) Edward said that they didn’t approach or consider Roth for a reunion in VH until AFTER Sammy had left to go back to being a solo artist…Sammy later claimed otherwise. Ed claimed that Sammy couldn’t claim he was ‘floored’ by hearing in his phone conversation with Ed by Roth joining because chronologically Roth joining HADN’T EVEN HAPPENED YET’ and the brothers didn’t state their INTENT to get Roth back in the band in order for Sammy to be ‘floored’ by it. Ed said later Sammy was changing and distorting the chronological order of events in order to claim he was pushed out, not quit. Alex said of Sammy in a 1987 interview - ‘guy leaves band of his own accord, then later guy gets angry , re-writes history and falsely claims he was pushed’ ….If Sammy left it wasn’t because of Roth re joining ,, it was because of the politics in the band because of new manager Ray Daniels and him possibly weaponising Eddie against Sammy. This led Sammy to later say - ‘ Roth rejoining the band was basically the tactic of that crooked manager which was a publicity stunt on the fans. But the plan backfired on them when Ed and Roth went for each other over Ed’s hip replacement. There may have been some truth in this.
