    So useful. Content like this is why Techthusiasm is one of the best places ever to learn about the Kaleidescape platform! Well done.

    This might be the first video to make me glad I don’t have K in my system at the moment. You don’t seem to voice too much frustration about the double movie downloads issue. Having to essentially buy a second V to solve this seems a little problematic.
    For the original price of entry you paid. I don’t think it’s fair to be soft-locked out of being able to play Dolby Vision/fallback to HDR10 on your Strato C. I doubt whatever projector you get will have DV support.
    Just seems like a slap to those original investors.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před měsícem

      I don't think the double download issue will affect that many folks in a way that matters much. You don't have to buy the 2nd V, if you don't want to. The V can play the HDR10 download. I think I focused the video more on just information than opinion. We can discuss more in the next live, perhaps. I'm sure if they could have added DV to the Strato C in software, they would have.

  • @avtechman77
    @avtechman77 Před měsícem +3

    They should have added 3D support. In my opinion, that would have been more beneficial than DV. Especially for those of us with 3D compatible TV's and projectors. They need to make this happen

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před měsícem

      I don't think the last form of 3D will be making a resurgence any time soon, though certainly some folks like it.

      3D is dead and should stay dead.

    Very interesting and good detail. However I do have a few questions. 1) Is there any charge to redownload a purchased movie after you have deleted it to make room on the server? 2) What is the minimum internet connection needed for timely downloads (I have 300 mps)? 3) Is there a cost efficient way of replacing movies I already have on 4K BRD or do just have to buy them again at full price? 4) Do rented movies require you to delete purchased movies to make room on the server? 5) For casual viewing are there any downsides of the Strato V? Thanks.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před měsícem

      1. There is no charge to redownload purchased movies.
      2. The normal download time quote for the V is 10 minutes for a 2-hour 4K movie on a 1Gbps internet connection. If you have 1/3rd the speed, it will take 3x the time. So, figure a half an hour.
      3. For movies you own on disc, you can attach a PC Blu-ray drive the USB port on the Strato and feed your discs through to catalog them. You then receive digital offers to buy them on K, which can be as low as $4.92.
      4. Rented movies or owned movies when downloaded each just take up space. Space is just space. So, if you have a drive full of owned stuff and rent a movie, something is being deleted to make room.
      5. Not at all, to me, as long as you plan what you want to watch with the 30-minute download.
      Reach out jaremy@techthusiasm.net if you want to talk directly about K!

      At a $4,000 price point now, this is less expensive than tons of other pieces of gear that people really enjoy and consider normal parts of their theater setups. I don't agree with your assessment, but we can each have our own opinions.

    Honest question. What use case do you use this product for when an apple 4K tv cannot solve in a Home Theater?

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před měsícem

      I have owned Kaleidescape for several years based on it being the best fidelity source I can use in my home theater, early access to movie releases digitally, access to more 4K content than on disc, and none of the hassles or inefficiencies of buying, handling, storing, ripping, or playing discs. I've been quite happy with the choice as Apple hasn't seen fit to go high fidelity with iTunes year after year.

    • @itguru2037
      @itguru2037 Před měsícem

      @@Techthusiasm is the fidelity worth the ROI versus Apple TV streaming? I am a video enthusiast for over 40 years starting with VHS then Beta, Laser disc, cd, dvd, Hddisk, the Blu-ray and finally streaming. I used to rip my collection and frankly speaking ran out of space so I’m all in on digital. I suppose since you are into that ecosystem it makes sense. How is this different from Plex

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před měsícem

      To me, it is. RIO is dependent on your disposable cash though, so that is relative to the individual. Until Apple does high bit rate video and lossless, I'm happy to keep going with Kaleidescape, and that day with Apple may never actually come. I have a strato s and really disappointed that you can’t use the s with the v. also hate that the strato v does not come with an hdmi audio only port as I like to run the hdmi video to my display and run the audio only to my processor. The solution that make sense in my situation is to add either a terra prime ssd or hdd server. The approach Kscape took with the strato v is dumb from a logistics standpoint.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před měsícem

      I think the issue or reason for this, IMO, is probably less the V and more about the technical capability of the S. If I can help you with anything, reach out at jaremy@techthusiasm.net.

    Just purchased the Strato V. So excited to be in the kaleidescape community now.
    So you were saying that we shouldn’t look at download size too much. My kaleidescape will be hooked up to my JVC NZ7 - so should I only be downloading the HDR10 versions? Top Gun Maverick is 68.2gb HDR10 version and the Dolby Vision version is 84.8gb. So I should only download the HDR10 version as my projector doesn’t play Dolby vision?

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před měsícem

      I would say, yeah, just download the HDR10 versions in your case. You don't need the DV, and if you're doing any extra video processing ahead of the projector that demands it either, stick to the format that exactly matches your system.

    Am I missing something, or is the Strato S 6TB still a good deal (especially used) if I don’t care about DV? I’m planning to use my Plex server and the Strato S 6TB strategically for a limited number of movies (mostly new ones that are still in theaters). Thoughts?

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před měsícem

      A used S is an OK pickup still, as long as you're fine with slow downloads, and assuming you're getting a great deal. I wouldn't be paying more than like $2,000 - $2,500 maybe for a 6TB S anymore when the V is $4K MSRP. If you want to discuss a V, reach out at jaremy@techthusiasm.net and we can discuss the price.

    I am deciding whether to get one and would like to know when you are creating a script, does it save if the movies are not on the player? What about edited scenes?
    Not saying this is a deal breaker but I prefer to have my scenes and scripts saved and if I need the movie again, I can just download it. Thanks

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Před měsícem

      You definitely need a few things present. To make a custom scene, the movie would have to be downloaded because you have to play it. I think the same goes to make a script. I'm not sure what might happen thought once the movie goes away and comes back. I'd have to give that a hands-on test and see. Maybe a good video topic there. Hit me up at jaremy@techthusiasm.net to chat about it.
